It includes platform-based lending, equity crowdfunding and private credit, but those routes have different providers, contracts, risks and rules. For a business comparing options, the useful question is not which route is universally best; it is what the business must give in return, what it can qualify for and how the terms affect cash flow and control.
What alternative finance means—and what it does not
There is no single standardized market category called “alternative finance.” The term is commonly used for funding channels outside traditional bank lending, but it can also include finance that complements a bank loan. It describes a range of mechanisms rather than one product with shared pricing, eligibility rules or protections.
It is also important to distinguish alternative finance for businesses from consumer borrowing. The main mechanisms discussed here concern business funding. A broad measure of non-bank financial activity is not a measure of how much a small business can raise through a particular platform or product.
What are the main alternatives to a bank loan?
| Route | How funding is arranged | What the business gives in return | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lending-based crowdfunding or marketplace lending | An online platform connects borrowers with lenders. Those lenders can include individuals, institutions or both. | A borrowing obligation; interest, fees and other contract terms depend on the provider and jurisdiction. | The platform is an intermediary or channel; the lenders providing the money are not necessarily individual “peers.” The IMF describes marketplace lending as connecting lenders and borrowers through online platforms. |
| Investment-based or equity crowdfunding | A business raises investment from multiple investors through a platform. | An investment claim, which may involve equity and dilution; exact rights and terms depend on the offer and applicable law. | This is investment, not simply another form of a repayable loan. The European Union framework covers investment-based as well as lending-based crowdfunding for business finance. |
| Private credit | Non-bank funds or other private finance entities provide credit. | A contractual credit claim; pricing, collateral, covenants and repayment terms must be checked for the specific offer. | Private credit is part of a wider non-bank finance landscape, not a synonym for retail crowdfunding. |
These routes can serve businesses that have difficulty securing traditional bank finance or supplement existing funding. ESMA identifies crowdfunding as important to small and medium-sized enterprises that often struggle to obtain traditional bank financing. That does not establish that a non-bank route will be cheaper, safer or available to any particular business.

What the latest non-bank finance figures show
The Financial Stability Board’s 2025 monitoring report covers 29 jurisdictions representing more than 90% of global GDP. For 2024, it reports that non-bank financial intermediation (NBFI) assets grew 9.4%, compared with 4.7% growth in the banking sector. NBFI accounted for 51% of total global financial assets, or $256.8 trillion.
Those figures describe a broad financial system category, not the size or growth of crowdfunding, marketplace lending or the amount of funding available to an individual business. The FSB’s NBFI measures encompass a wider set of institutions and activities; private credit is among the diverse entities discussed in its account of private finance.

In the European Union, the European Systemic Risk Board’s 2025 risk monitor attributes nearly 23% of total credit to EU non-financial corporations to non-bank sources, following a rebound in market-based credit. It also reports €50.7 trillion in 2024 assets for EU investment funds and other financial institutions. These are EU-specific measures of corporate credit and broad non-bank assets, respectively—not global measures of alternative finance or crowdfunding.
How to compare a business funding offer
Compare the actual contract and provider, rather than relying on the label “alternative.” A platform, a lender and a private credit fund may play different roles in the same arrangement.

- Identify who supplies the capital. Is it a bank, a platform-arranged lender, individual or institutional investors, or a private credit fund? Check who will hold the claim and who is responsible for servicing it.
- Pin down what the business owes or gives up. Establish whether the arrangement requires repayment, interest and fees, grants equity or other investor rights, or creates another contractual claim. Do not assume two offers with similar marketing language have the same legal structure.
- Check eligibility and access. Confirm requirements relating to business stage, revenue, creditworthiness, location, collateral, investor qualification and campaign readiness. Availability can differ by provider and jurisdiction.
- Calculate total cost and cash-flow impact. Review fees, payment timing, whether payments can vary, maturity, covenants and the consequences of a missed payment. Assess the schedule against realistic business cash flow, not just a headline rate or funding amount.
- Assess control and exposure. For debt, examine collateral and repayment obligations; for investment, examine dilution, investor rights and reporting requirements. In either case, consider reliance on a platform or servicer and the risks borne by the funders.
- Verify oversight and disclosures. Identify the regulator, the product’s legal structure and any relevant investor or borrower protections. A regulated platform does not make an investment risk-free or guarantee repayment.
There is no single current, apples-to-apples dataset establishing pricing, approval rates, defaults or borrower outcomes across all these mechanisms. A universal ranking of the routes as cheaper, easier or safer would therefore be misleading; compare specific offers on their own terms.

These are EU rules and EU market evidence; they are not a global regulatory template. Before applying for funding or investing, check the current rules in the relevant jurisdiction, including platform authorization, disclosures, borrower requirements and investor eligibility. The legal form of the specific offer matters as much as the platform’s general description of its service.
