What does the 30,000 figure mean?
On October 27, 2025, Reuters reported that Amazon was targeting cuts of as many as 30,000 corporate jobs, citing people familiar with the matter. The following day, Amazon announced a reduction of approximately 14,000 corporate roles. The initial Reuters figure was a reported target—not Amazon’s confirmed count for the October round. Reuters’ October 27 report and Amazon’s October announcement describe those different figures.
On January 28, 2026, Amazon announced approximately 16,000 additional role reductions. Added to the October announcement, the two announced rounds total approximately 30,000 roles. This is arithmetic based on Amazon’s approximate figures, not a separately reported precise total.

Does “almost 10 percent” refer to all Amazon employees?
No. The percentage in coverage refers to corporate jobs, not Amazon’s entire workforce, which also includes large numbers of employees in operations and other roles. A contemporaneous CRN report described the company as having about 1.6 million workers overall and roughly 350,000 corporate employees at that time; those are period-specific estimates, not a current headcount. CRN’s October 2025 report provides that workforce context.

Why did Amazon say it was making cuts?
Amazon described the changes as an effort to streamline its organization by reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy. The company also said it would continue hiring in strategic areas. That is Amazon’s stated rationale, not an independent finding about the effects of the restructuring. What support did Amazon describe for affected employees?
In October, Amazon said most affected employees would have 90 days to look for another internal role, with timing subject to local laws, and described support for impacted staff. For the January round, Amazon again described support. The Associated Press reported that U.S.-based employees would have 90 days to seek another internal role and that those who did not move to another role would be offered severance, outplacement services, and health-insurance benefits. Those details are specific to the reporting and geography; employee terms can differ by location and applicable law. Is 30,000 the final number of Amazon job losses?
The available announcements establish approximately 30,000 roles across the October 2025 and January 2026 rounds, but they do not establish how many announced role reductions became completed employee separations or the company’s net workforce change. They also do not establish a definitive cumulative total of later corporate reductions through October 2026. Treat later reported actions as separate events unless their scope and relationship to these rounds are confirmed by an authoritative source.
