Tim Walz brought 12 years in Congress and a record of work on the House Agriculture Committee to Kamala Harris’s 2024 presidential ticket. His committee work included farm bills, veterans’ access to agricultural programs, rural development and renewable fuels. That record needs one important distinction: Walz sponsored provisions later included in the 2018 farm bill, but Roll Call reported that he did not vote on the bill’s final passage in the House.

Walz’s congressional agriculture experience

Walz was elected to the U.S. House in 2007, representing a mainly rural southern Minnesota district, and served until he became governor in 2019, according to the University of Illinois Farm Policy News summary of his record. The House Agriculture Committee’s official roster confirms that he was a minority member in the 115th Congress. Roll Call reported that he served 12 years in Congress and became the committee’s fourth-ranked Democrat in that Congress.

The University of Illinois summary says Walz served on the House Agriculture Forestry Subcommittee and the House Agriculture Commodity Markets, Digital Assets and Rural Development Subcommittee. It also reports that he served six terms on the Agriculture Committee, citing Progressive Farmer’s Chris Clayton.

Farm bills and the 2018 vote distinction

The University of Illinois summary describes Walz as involved in drafting and passing the 2008, 2014 and 2018 farm bills. That description of his committee work should not be read as evidence that he voted for final passage of each bill.

His role on the 2018 bill illustrates why the distinction matters. Roll Call reported that legislation Walz sponsored to expand veterans’ access to farm programs had some provisions incorporated into the farm bill. Those changes covered access for certain veterans to farm education and training and USDA agriculture programs, as well as crop-insurance provisions for qualifying veterans. Roll Call also reported that Walz was recorded as not voting on final House passage of the bill. During committee markup, he criticized the process, saying Democrats had been “locked out.”

Roll Call quoted Walz at the April 18, 2018, markup: “I came to Congress to write farm bills. I came to get policy right.” His statement expresses his aim; it does not change the record of his final-passage vote.

Other agriculture priorities

The University of Illinois summary identifies year-round E15 sales, renewable fuels, rural energy, beginning farmers and the concentration of farm profits among Walz’s reported priorities. These issues connect agricultural policy to energy markets, rural economic development and opportunities for people entering farming.

The summary also describes a mixed trade record: Walz opposed several trade agreements, supported the South Korea agreement, and, as governor, expressed support for stable trade relations with China for Minnesota farmers. These are selected positions, not a complete account of his trade policy.

How agricultural supporters described his record

Gary Wertish, president of the Minnesota Farmers Union, told the University of Illinois summary that Walz understood rural communities and had a rural background. Wertish also described him as a strong supporter of agriculture, pointing in particular to his work on farm bills and renewable fuels. Those are a farm-group leader’s assessments, rather than a measure of the effects of Walz’s policies.

Why “VP pick” is a 2024 reference

Harris selected Walz as her running mate in August 2024. That is the historical context for describing him as a “VP pick”; it is not a statement about his current office or role. The available sources establish the 2024 campaign context but do not verify his status in October 2026.
