During lockdown, online income generally came from three different activities: finding freelance clients, completing online tasks where a service was available, or selling goods. Each has different requirements, fees and payment timing—and none guarantees work or a reliable income. Some pandemic-era recommendations are now outdated: Amazon Mechanical Turk says it permanently closed on September 30, 2026.
Which kind of online income fits your situation?
Choose a route based on what you can offer and how much uncertainty you can manage. Freelancing means selling a service to a client; task work means completing assignments made available through a platform; selling goods means finding buyers for items. These are not equivalent to a job placement, and results depend on customer demand, platform access and whether work is approved.

Freelance work: find clients, agree terms, then deliver
Upwork’s official help page describes a sequence of creating a freelancer profile, searching for projects, submitting proposals, agreeing terms with a client, delivering the work and withdrawing available earnings. A marketplace can help you find prospective clients, but it does not guarantee a match or a steady pipeline.
Upwork says freelancer service fees vary by contract and other factors, and Connects are needed to submit proposals to most jobs. Check the platform’s current fee and proposal rules before deciding whether applying is worthwhile. The documentation does not establish a typical earning level or how quickly an individual will secure a contract.

Task platforms: verify current status before signing up
Older lockdown-era lists may point to Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk), but its official FAQ says the service permanently closed on September 30, 2026. The FAQ instructs existing workers to verify their payment preferences by October 30, 2026. Do not treat MTurk as an available way to earn money.
For any other task service, confirm that it is operating in your location, that you meet its eligibility rules, what counts as approved work, and how and when funds can be withdrawn. Availability, task volume and payment rules can change; the information here does not establish a comprehensive list of currently available platforms.

Selling online: income depends on completed sales
Selling goods online is a way to earn money, not a job placement. In the Federal Reserve’s 2020 U.S. household survey, reported in 2021, 13% of adults said they sold goods to make money in the month before the survey, and 9% said they sold goods online. Those figures describe activity during the survey period; they are not current participation rates, a measure of profit, or a forecast for a new seller.
Before listing items, account for the time and costs involved and check the selling platform’s current terms. A listing may attract no buyer, and a sale does not by itself show that the activity was profitable.

Screen work-from-home offers for scams
The Federal Trade Commission warns that work-at-home offers can be scams. Its practical advice is not to pay to get a job—including supposed charges for certification, training, equipment or supplies—and to research a potential employer before accepting an offer. The FTC’s consumer guidance is available in “Looking for work after Coronavirus layoffs?”
- Be wary of a promise of guaranteed income, especially when the offer requires an upfront payment.
- Research the organization independently and understand what work you would do, who pays you and under what terms.
- Do not treat a fee for training, supplies or access as proof that an opportunity is legitimate.
In a December 2020 release, FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Andrew Smith said: “If someone promises you guaranteed income, but then tells you to pay them, tell the FTC right away so we can work to shut them down.”

The FTC’s December 2020 analysis gives historical context, not an estimate of legitimate online earnings: consumers reported nearly $150 million in income-scam losses in the first nine months of 2020. It counted 44,274 income-scam reports through the first three quarters of 2020, combining FTC reports with reports from Sentinel data contributors under the analysis’s definition. For the FTC’s business and work-at-home opportunity category, the median individual reported loss was $3,000, based on FTC reports from January 2018 through September 2020. These are complaint and reported-loss figures for specified periods, not a prediction of what a person might earn or lose today. The Federal Reserve’s 2020 survey also found that 14% of adults who performed gig activities both found customers and received payment through an app or online platform. Published in May 2021, the survey describes U.S. household activity during 2020; it does not show that platforms caused gig work to succeed or indicate what a new worker can expect now. There is no comparable current earnings figure established here for freelancing, task work and online sales. Treat claims about likely income cautiously, and compare platforms by fees, work availability, approval rules and withdrawal timing rather than by an advertised earning promise.
