Water-Logged Wallet: Do Credit Cards Really Work After Getting Wet?

A credit card that got wet often still works once dry, but water resistance is not a guarantee. Here is how to dry it, which payment method to try, and when to call your issuer.

Usually, yes. A credit card that gets wet in a wallet, a pocket or a spill will often keep working once it has dried. Chase says the chip and magnetic stripe are designed to be water-resistant. That is a design feature, not a guarantee. A card that has been through a washing machine, exposed to heat, bent, or otherwise physically damaged can stop working, and the chance of that is higher than for a card that was only splashed or soaked briefly.

Why a wet card usually still works

A card does not need to be dry to be read. A payment terminal reads the information stored on the card, not the plastic itself. The CFPB explains that both the magnetic stripe and the chip carry the information a merchant uses to authorize a transaction, and the chip is read by inserting the card into a compatible terminal. Water that reaches the surface does not erase that data. The question is whether the chip and stripe still make reliable contact with the reader after drying.

Chase’s official care guidance states: “The chips and magnetic strips found on the front and back of cards are designed to be water-resistant.” The statement is attributed to Chase as an organization; the guidance does not name an individual speaker.

Where water resistance stops

Chase pairs that reassurance with a clear caveat. Putting a card through the washing machine along with clothes could potentially damage it. The same guidance points to heat, bending and other physical damage as ways a card can be harmed regardless of water resistance. Treat a washed card as a risk to check, not a card that has definitely failed.

No percentage of cards that keep working or fail after water exposure is established in the sources reviewed. Chase and JCB give care instructions, not failure rates, so there is no published number to set against your own card’s odds.

How to dry a wet card

  1. Take the card out of the wallet and set it apart. Leaving it in a damp wallet keeps moisture around the card and can soak the other cards as well.
  2. Wipe it gently with a soft cloth. JCB’s FAQ, updated September 18, 2025, advises a soft-cloth wipe for a wet card. A soft or microfiber cloth is enough; no cleaning product is needed.
  3. Do not scrub the chip or stripe. Avoid abrasive rubbing over the chip or the magnetic stripe, and do not soak the card in cleaning products.
  4. Let it air-dry completely before returning it to the wallet. Chase gives this instruction for cleaned cards. Keep it away from heat sources, since heat is one of the damage risks Chase lists.
  5. Check the card once it is dry. Look for warping, cracks, a loose or lifting chip, or a worn stripe before you try to use it.

Which payment method to try

Many cards offer more than one way to pay. Which methods work depends on both the card and the merchant’s terminal, so a method that works at one checkout may not be available at another.

Payment method How it is used What the sources establish What the sources do not establish
Contactless tap Hold the card near a compatible terminal Available on contactless cards at terminals that support it (Chase, “Contactless Payments” and “What to know about contactless credit cards”) Whether a wet card reads reliably by tap; not stated
Chip insertion Insert the card into a compatible terminal The chip carries payment information and is read this way (CFPB, September 29, 2015) Whether a chip that has been wet fails more often than a dry one; not stated
Magnetic-stripe swipe Swipe through a terminal that accepts it The stripe carries payment information; Chase describes swipe as an alternate method where the terminal supports it Whether a wet stripe reads reliably after drying; not stated

If the card looks intact, try an interface that the card and the terminal both support. Do not keep forcing a visibly damaged card into a reader. Chase and the CFPB describe how each interface works, but neither says that one method is more water-tolerant than another, so the choice is about what the terminal accepts, not about which method is safer for a wet card.

When to contact the card issuer

Call or contact the issuer if any of these apply:

  • The card is visibly bent, cracked, or has a damaged chip or stripe.
  • The card will not read at a terminal after you have tried an interface the card and terminal both support.
  • The card was washed in a machine or exposed to heat and now behaves differently.

Ask the issuer for instructions and a replacement. JCB says a card can be reissued when its magnetic or IC components fail. Wells Fargo’s contactless-card guidance notes that replacement-card details can vary, so ask how long a replacement takes and how the issuer handles any charges that are still pending while you wait.

What the evidence does not show

The available guidance treats the chip, the stripe and the contactless feature as separate payment interfaces. It does not establish that they fail independently after water exposure, and it does not promise that a card will work by an alternate method once it has been wet. If one interface is unavailable, another may work, but that is not guaranteed.

The sources are also dated unevenly. The JCB FAQ was updated September 18, 2025, and the CFPB explainer is dated September 29, 2015. Card design, issuer replacement procedures and terminal support can change, so check your issuer’s current instructions for a replacement if you need one.
