Wawanesa is a Canadian mutual insurer that sells a broad range of insurance through independent brokers. Its listed products include auto, home, condo, tenant, seasonal-residence, farm, commercial, life and group insurance, but availability and policy terms depend on your province and circumstances. For an individual quote or coverage advice, contact a broker.

What is Wawanesa Insurance?

The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company says it was founded in Wawanesa, Manitoba, in 1896 and is headquartered in Winnipeg. It distributes Canadian products through independent brokers, rather than providing a direct online quote for customers to finalize themselves. Wawanesa’s company information describes its Canadian ownership and history.

Wawanesa’s Canadian product list spans personal, business and group insurance. That list is not a guarantee that every product or option is available to every applicant in every province; ask a broker about your specific location, property, vehicle and eligibility.

What coverage does Wawanesa offer in Canada?

Wawanesa lists these Canadian insurance lines on its website. The exact coverage, eligibility and availability should be confirmed with a broker for your province and situation. See Wawanesa’s Canadian insurance offerings.

How to get a quote and compare coverage

Wawanesa directs prospective customers to an insurance broker for a quote. A broker can explain what is available and help you compare your actual options. No single national premium or set of policy limits applies to every customer, so a generalized claim that Wawanesa is cheaper or offers better terms would not be meaningful.

  1. Contact a broker. Ask for a quote for the right province, address, household or business, vehicle or property, and policy term.
  2. Match the details across quotes. Compare the same risks and insured items, limits, deductibles, optional coverage, payment plan and policy term.
  3. Read the wording, not just the price. Check exclusions, conditions and endorsements in the actual quote and policy wording, including provincial differences.
  4. Ask how service works. Confirm how to report and track a claim, who to contact for policy changes, and what broker support is available.

For auto insurance, distinguish included coverage from optional coverage and ask about any eligibility conditions shown in the quote. For home, tenant or condo insurance, compare the insured property, liability limits, covered perils, exclusions and optional protections. Wawanesa recommends using a broker for policy and coverage questions. Wawanesa’s FAQ explains its quote and service channels.

How to report a claim and manage a policy

Report a claim

Wawanesa says Canadian claims can be opened 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. For home and personal auto policyholders, its Member Centre provides access to policy documents and claims. The company’s FAQ says business and farm policyholders cannot currently register for that portal. These are company-described channels, not independent measures of claim speed or satisfaction. Check Wawanesa’s current FAQ for claim-reporting information.

Make a policy change

Contact your broker to ask about policy changes or coverage questions. Do not assume that a change to a vehicle, home or business is automatically covered; ask how it affects the policy and when it takes effect.

What Wawanesa’s financial figures and rating tell you

Wawanesa says The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company has an A (Excellent) financial strength rating from AM Best. The company says the assessment reflects factors including capitalization, liquidity, operating performance, broker relationships, market position and geographic diversification. A financial-strength rating is not a promise that a particular loss is covered, that a claim will be paid, or that it will be resolved in a particular way. Wawanesa’s company information describes the rating.

In its 2025 member report, Wawanesa reported approximately $1.9 billion in claims paid, 110,000 total claims, $4.1 billion in annual policy premiums, a 97.8% combined operating ratio, and more than 1.8 million members. The same report states A (Excellent) AM Best ratings for Wawanesa and Wawanesa Life. These are company-reported 2025 figures, useful for scale and context but not a forecast of any individual customer’s experience. Read the 2025 member report.

Separately, Wawanesa reported more than 1.87 million total policyholders as of June 2025. That dated policyholder count is a different measure from the member figure in the 2025 report; the terms should not be treated as interchangeable. Wawanesa’s company information gives the policyholder figure.

What customer reviews and complaint data can—and cannot—show

Trustpilot and ConsumerAffairs contain individual customer accounts and company replies, including accounts raising questions about claims communication or coverage decisions. These sites are self-selected review sources: they can help you identify questions to ask, but they cannot establish how often a particular outcome occurs or provide a representative measure of Canadian policyholder satisfaction. Treat individual allegations as accounts, not verified findings. Trustpilot reviews and ConsumerAffairs reviews are examples of such individual feedback.

A separate source, the California Department of Insurance’s 2025 Consumer Complaint Study, concerns California auto insurers and Wawanesa General Insurance Company. It ranks the company third among 50 large auto insurers and reports justified complaint ratios of 0.6 per 100,000 earned exposures for 2024, 1.3 for 2023 and 1.6 for 2022. The study defines the ratio as justified complaints per 100,000 earned exposures. This is California auto complaint data for those years—not evidence about Canadian policies, other lines of insurance, total claims or overall customer satisfaction. See the California Department of Insurance complaint study materials.

Why U.S. Wawanesa search results may look different

This review concerns Wawanesa’s Canadian insurance business. The former U.S. operation is now called W Insurance, a separate current market context. W Insurance says the rebrand did not change policies, coverage, premiums or claims handling; its announcement says the U.S. business became part of the Automobile Club of Southern California in 2024 and serves California. U.S. auto information and customer accounts should not be applied to Canadian policyholders. Read W Insurance’s announcement.
