Walmart’s 2022 Nebraska deal was a minority investment in Sustainable Beef LLC, a rancher-owned company—not a purchase of the North Platte plant. The partnership was intended to secure Angus beef from the company’s planned processing facility. Local reporting says the facility became functional in 2025, with beef reaching Walmart stores across the region by January 2026.
What Walmart invested in
On August 31, 2022, Walmart announced an agreement to take a minority equity stake in Sustainable Beef LLC, a rancher-owned company based in North Platte, Nebraska. Walmart said it would have representation on the company’s board and source Angus beef from its planned processing facility. The announcement did not disclose Walmart’s investment amount or its exact ownership percentage. Walmart’s announcement described the deal as a way to add beef-processing capacity and give ranchers more opportunity to participate in processing their cattle.
That distinction matters: Walmart invested in the independently producer-owned business and arranged a sourcing partnership; it did not announce that it owned the Nebraska plant. Walmart’s Tyler Lehr said the investment would provide greater visibility into the beef supply chain and complement the company’s regeneration commitment. Those are Walmart’s stated aims, not independently verified results.
What the North Platte project was expected to deliver
Early cost, staffing, capacity and economic-impact numbers were project plans or projections, not confirmed operating results. Nebraska Public Media’s report on the groundbreaking described a planned $325 million facility, more than 1,500 cattle per day in planned capacity, 875 projected workers, agreements with 26 local feedlots, and an estimated $1.1 billion in yearly regional economic impact. Its publication date was not available in the page metadata. These figures should not be read as current throughput, headcount or realized impact.

Walmart’s 2022 announcement separately forecast more than 800 new jobs and said it expected groundbreaking the following month and opening by late 2024. The later schedule was not met as forecast: KNOP reported on January 14, 2026, that the North Platte facility became fully functional in 2025. The sources do not establish current staffing, actual cattle throughput or realized economic impact.
Nebraska Public Media also reported a $20 million state allocation from federal American Rescue Plan Act funds for wastewater treatment at qualifying meat-processing facilities. That was contextual public financing for wastewater infrastructure, not the amount Walmart invested in Sustainable Beef.

Where the beef goes—and how Olathe fits in
KNOP reported in January 2026 that beef processed at North Platte was available at Walmart stores across the region. The report does not establish nationwide availability or inventory at any particular store. It also said the beef was sent to Olathe, Kansas, for final packaging and distribution.
Olathe is a separate operation from the Nebraska processor. Walmart announced the opening of its first fully owned-and-operated case-ready beef facility there on June 27, 2025. The Kansas facility packages Angus cuts sourced directly from Sustainable Beef and sends them to Walmart distribution centers for Midwest stores. Walmart described the Olathe operation as creating more than 600 jobs in the area. The roles are different: North Platte processes beef; Olathe turns beef into packaged retail cuts and supports distribution.

What shoppers can—and cannot—assume
- Regional availability was reported. KNOP said the North Platte facility’s beef had reached Walmart shelves across the region as of January 2026.
- Store-level stock is not established. The report does not confirm that a particular store currently carries the beef, or that it is available nationwide.
- No consumer brand is identified in the cited sources. The announcements establish an Angus-beef sourcing relationship, but do not name a consumer-facing brand for the North Platte product.
- Company commitments are not audited outcomes. Walmart’s comments about supply-chain visibility, animal care and grazing management describe stated intentions or policies, not independently verified performance.
