In a scam reported by Malwarebytes on September 18, 2024, Google ads for Walmart phone-number searches led some customers to genuine Walmart-hosted shopping lists containing scammer-written customer-service details. Callers who used those numbers were reportedly pressured for personal and financial information, threatened with arrest, and told to send money to a Bitcoin wallet. A real walmart.com address did not make the list’s phone number legitimate. The cited report documents that campaign at the time; it does not establish whether the same ads or numbers are active now.
How the fake Walmart list scam worked
Malwarebytes researcher Jérôme Segura described a chain of trust abuse: the ad appeared in a Walmart phone-number search, its link led to a real Walmart domain, but the linked list contained information created by scammers. The report describes scammers making Walmart accounts and lists, adding custom text, fake customer-service names, and phone numbers, then using share links to those lists in Google ads.
This distinction matters: a genuine website address or HTTPS connection confirms something about the connection and domain, not that user-added content or contact details on a page are trustworthy.
From a search result to a threatening call
According to Malwarebytes, people who called the listed numbers reached a call center where operators impersonated Walmart and other authorities. The reported sequence included asking for a caller’s name and email, claiming a large purchase had been made, and seeking banking information and Social Security numbers. Operators then escalated to claims of money laundering, threats of an arrest warrant, and instructions to withdraw money and send it to a Bitcoin wallet. The report describes observed tactics; it does not establish that every caller or victim experienced every step.

How to tell whether a Walmart customer-service number is genuine
Do not trust a number just because it appears in a sponsored result, a search snippet, a caller ID display, or a Walmart-hosted list. Walmart warns that caller ID can be manipulated and advises using a contact number obtained independently, such as one on a statement, invoice, payment card, or the company’s official website. Its guidance says: “If in doubt, call a trusted number for the company, such as the one on a statement or invoice, the back of your credit/debit card, or on their official website.” See Walmart’s fraud-alert guidance.
If someone calls unexpectedly about an account problem, end the call rather than using a number they provide. Open the retailer’s official website or app yourself and use the contact route listed there. Do not disclose passwords, PINs, full Social Security numbers, or banking details to an unsolicited caller.
Why an arrest threat and payment demand are red flags
Walmart warns about government impersonators and payment demands. The Federal Trade Commission says arrest threats tied to demands for cryptocurrency, payment apps, gift cards, or wire transfers are scam indicators. It states: “Real law enforcement will never text or email you an arrest warrant.” The FTC also warns: “Only scammers say you can only pay with a payment app, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or a wire transfer service like Western Union or MoneyGram.” Read the FTC guidance on government impersonators.

Do not transfer money to a Bitcoin wallet or make another payment because a caller says it will prevent arrest. Hang up, do not continue the conversation, and speak with someone you trust or contact the relevant institution through a verified channel.

What to do if you shared information or sent money
Act according to what the caller obtained. Contact your bank or other financial institution promptly if you shared account details or sent money, using a number from your card, statement, or official site. Ask the institution what steps are appropriate to secure the account or dispute a transaction. If you gave away a password, change it through the real service and update any other accounts where you reused it.

- Shared personal information: Follow the relevant institution’s or service’s official account-protection advice. Do not respond to follow-up calls or messages that claim you must pay to fix the problem.
- Shared banking information or paid: Contact the financial institution immediately. The FTC directs people who paid a scammer to its recovery guidance.
- Report the incident: Walmart recommends reporting suspected fraud to local law enforcement and the FTC. Use the official reporting channels linked from Walmart’s fraud-alert page and the FTC’s reporting site.
How to avoid a repeat
- Navigate to Walmart independently instead of relying on an ad or a phone number in a search result.
- Verify contact details using an official company source or a trusted number on a statement, invoice, or payment card.
- Refuse unsolicited requests for sensitive personal or financial details.
- End calls that create urgency, demand secrecy, threaten arrest, or insist on cryptocurrency or another payment transfer.
The September 2024 Malwarebytes report documents this specific fake-list campaign, but supplies no victim count or total-loss figure and does not establish current activity. Treat any suspicious Walmart contact as unverified and confirm it independently.
