There is no verified current figure for Waheed Alli’s personal net worth in the sources reviewed. The Guardian reported an estimate of £200 million in October 2024, while its 2010 MediaGuardian 100 profile listed £80 million. Both are dated press estimates, not confirmed valuations, and the reports do not state how either figure was calculated.

What is Waheed Alli’s net worth?

The most recent figure identified is The Guardian’s October 2024 estimate of £200 million. It should be described as a newspaper estimate, not as a verified statement of Alli’s current wealth. The report does not explain its valuation method, and the available sources do not provide an official personal net-worth disclosure from Alli.

For comparison, The Guardian’s 2010 MediaGuardian 100 profile listed his worth as £80 million. That, too, was an editorial estimate rather than an audited personal balance sheet. Because the sources do not establish that the two figures were calculated on a consistent basis, they do not support a reliable growth rate or a like-for-like measure of changes in his wealth.

Figure Publisher and date What it represents Methodology stated?
£200 million The Guardian, 23 October 2024 A reported estimate of Alli’s worth Not stated in the report
£80 million The Guardian, 13 July 2010 A historical MediaGuardian 100 estimate Not stated in the profile

Why public records do not give a net-worth total

The House of Lords register records certain interests for transparency and conflict-of-interest purposes. Its entries for Alli include remunerated employment and shareholdings, including interests connected with BM Creative Management Ltd, SGIF 2 Investments Ltd and SGIK 3 Investments Limited. The register is not a consolidated statement of assets and debts, so it cannot by itself establish a total net worth. The House of Lords Code of Conduct guide explains the categories and thresholds for registrable interests, including shareholdings and private-equity investments.

Likewise, a recorded directorship or company role does not prove the size or value of a person’s ownership stake. Companies House officer appointments documents roles and appointment histories, not a complete account of beneficial ownership, personal assets or liabilities. In its 2024 report, The Guardian quoted Alli saying of a company under discussion: “I don’t control the company and do not have any beneficial ownership of the company … I do not control the beneficial interests to these shares and am not involved in, nor exert any control over the business.” That statement concerns the company and shares addressed in the report; it should not be extended to other interests.

Career and company figures are not personal wealth figures

Alli’s business career helps explain why media outlets have published estimates, but company milestones cannot be converted into his personal net worth without evidence of the assets he owned, proceeds he retained, and liabilities he may have had.

  • According to 450 plc’s corporate biography, Alli co-founded Planet 24, which produced programmes including The Big Breakfast, The Word and Survivor; the company was sold to Carlton Productions in 1999.
  • He co-founded Shine, chaired Chorion, founded and led Silvergate Media, and chaired ASOS from 2001 to 2012, according to the same biography. Silvergate acquired the Octonauts intellectual property and distribution rights in 2011 and was sold to Sony in 2019.
  • 450 plc says ASOS’s market capitalisation grew from £12.3 million at its IPO to £1.9 billion during Alli’s chairmanship. Market capitalisation measures the company’s equity value, not the value of Alli’s personal holdings.
  • The Guardian’s 2010 profile listed Chorion turnover of £51.7 million; a 2009 Guardian interview described its annual revenues at the time as £54 million. Those are company revenue figures, not personal income or net worth.

A 2009 interview also reported that Alli left school at 16, began his career writing about unit trusts and later joined Save and Prosper. These details offer biographical context but do not establish a personal wealth calculation.
