A family from south of the river in Western Australia claimed a $50 million Powerball prize, according to a PerthNow report published July 25, 2015. The winning ticket was reportedly sold at newsXpress in Armadale Central Shopping Centre. The report did not name the family.
What was reported about the $50 million win?
PerthNow described the $50 million prize as Western Australia’s biggest single Division 1 prize at the time. That is the newspaper’s characterization in 2015, not a statement about the state’s current record.
The report also estimated that $8.5 million had been raised for the WA community during the five-week Powerball jackpot roll. That figure was PerthNow’s estimate; the article did not provide independent verification.
Who won the prize?
The 2015 report identified the winners only as an unnamed family from south of the river. It did not publish an individual claimant’s name, so there is no personal name to attach to the claim from this source. The winner recalled seeing the result: “I thought I must have been seeing things.”

Where was the winning ticket sold?
The ticket was reportedly purchased from newsXpress at Armadale Central Shopping Centre. The store’s owner, Philip Lu, told PerthNow: “We’re both delighted for the family,” adding, “It’s blessed to receive and divine to give.”
What did the family say it planned to do with the money?
The winner described plans to pay off debt, help relatives and renovate the family home: “Now we can pay off debt, take care of our family and do some much needed home renovations.” The winner also said, “We also want to donate to charity and we can with this amount.” These were intentions reported at the time; PerthNow did not follow up on whether the family carried them out.
