The third-party listing identified for this deal showed $299 against a displayed comparison price of $550—a stated discount of 46%, not 90%. Microsoft’s own U.S. Store listing showed the standalone product at $499.
That makes the offer potentially cheaper than buying directly from Microsoft, but the available listing does not establish that the key is an authorized, transferable Microsoft retail license. Treat it as an unverified third-party license offer, not a confirmed Microsoft promotion.

Visual Studio Professional 2026 is Microsoft’s full Windows development environment for building .NET, C++, desktop, web, cloud, mobile, service and game applications. Microsoft lists version 18.8.0 on its Professional downloads page.
#1 Best Overall
Microsoft positions Professional for individual developers and small teams. It includes professional developer tools, CodeLens, collaboration features and Azure DevOps integration. It is not interchangeable with Visual Studio Enterprise, which has a broader set of advanced debugging, testing, security and collaboration capabilities.
What does the 90% claim actually mean?
There are several different numbers that deal headlines can blur together:
- Microsoft’s observed standalone price: $499.
- Seller’s displayed sale price: $299.
- Seller’s displayed comparison price: $550.
- Deal headline: “90% off,” without independently documented checkout or license evidence.
At $299, the price is approximately 40% below Microsoft’s $499 standalone price. Compared with the seller’s $550 reference price, it is approximately 46% lower. Neither calculation supports a 90% saving.

The $550 comparison price also should not automatically be treated as Microsoft’s official recommended retail price. It is the seller’s reference figure, and the available evidence does not explain its basis.
Is the third-party license authorized?
The available listing does not establish whether Indigo Software Company is an authorized Microsoft reseller or whether the product is:
- a retail license;
- a volume-license assignment;
- an OEM or academic license;
- a subscription-derived entitlement; or
- a key restricted to a particular country or region.
It also does not establish whether the key is unused, transferable, linked to your Microsoft account, or guaranteed to remain valid. That does not prove the offer is counterfeit, stolen or invalid. It means the listing does not provide enough information to verify that it is an authorized Microsoft retail license.
Microsoft’s Visual Studio licensing guidance says Visual Studio is licensed per user rather than simply per installation. A licensed user may install and use the software on multiple devices for permitted design, development, testing and demonstration activities. Every person using Visual Studio in those ways needs a valid license.

Consequently, “one PC” wording should be treated carefully. A per-user license is not necessarily the same thing as a one-device software key.
What does “digital license” mean?
“Digital license” is a delivery description, not a precise licensing category. Before paying, ask exactly what you receive:
- a product key;
- a Microsoft account entitlement;
- a redemption code;
- a volume-license assignment;
- a subscription login; or
- download links plus a separately delivered key.
Download access is not the same as a license. Successful activation is not proof that the license was lawfully transferred or will remain valid. A working key is not automatically a transferable perpetual license, and a subscription login is not the same as ownership of a standalone product.
Use Microsoft’s official download page for the software itself. Do not install modified files supplied by a reseller.
Standalone license versus subscription
Visual Studio Professional 2026 standalone
Microsoft’s standalone Professional edition is a one-time purchase with a perpetual license for that version. The observed U.S. Microsoft Store price was $499. It does not include the complete benefits package associated with a Visual Studio subscription.
“Perpetual” means continued use of the licensed version under its terms; it does not mean free access to every future Visual Studio release.
Professional standard subscription
Microsoft’s pricing page lists the standard Professional subscription at $99.99 per user per month when paid annually, or approximately $1,199.88 for 12 months before taxes. Microsoft’s Store separately displayed a $1,199 price. The listed renewal rate was $66.59 per user per month after the first year.
Benefits include Professional, Azure DevOps Basic, a $50 monthly Azure credit, development and test software, training and support. Subscription pricing and benefits can vary by geography, account and checkout terms. Renewal discounts should not be assumed to be available to a new customer.
Professional monthly subscription
Microsoft lists a Professional monthly subscription at $45 per user per month through the Visual Studio Marketplace. It can suit temporary projects or users who want to avoid a large upfront payment, but it does not provide the full benefit set of the standard subscription.

Free alternatives
Visual Studio Community 2026
Visual Studio Community is free for individual developers, students and classrooms, open-source projects, and qualifying non-enterprise teams of up to five users. Microsoft’s restrictions matter: for relevant Community-use rules, an enterprise organization is described as having more than 250 PCs or more than $1 million in annual revenue. Commercial use by larger organizations may not qualify outside permitted academic, classroom and open-source scenarios.
Check Microsoft’s current Community licensing terms before using it for business work.
Visual Studio Code
Visual Studio Code is free and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. It is a source-code editor, not the same full Visual Studio IDE. It may be sufficient for developers who do not need Visual Studio’s integrated Windows tooling and Professional licensing.
When the $299 offer may make sense
Consider the third-party offer only if the seller confirms all of the following in writing:
- The final checkout price is still $299 or clearly documented.
- The license type is identified as standalone and perpetual, if that is what is being sold.
- The license is valid for your country and intended commercial use.
- The key or entitlement is unused and transferable where applicable.
- Activation occurs through your own Microsoft account.
- You receive a proper invoice and identifiable business contact details.
- The seller provides a meaningful refund if Microsoft rejects or revokes the entitlement.
- No shared or preconfigured Microsoft account is required.
- The seller explains whether updates are included and which version is licensed.
Use a payment method with buyer protection. Save screenshots of the listing, price, terms and refund policy before purchase.
When to buy directly from Microsoft
Microsoft is the safer route when the software supports business-critical work, multiple developers, compliance reporting or a regulated organization. Direct purchase also makes the license channel, account ownership and support path clearer.
For teams, remember that buying one key and sharing it may not satisfy Microsoft’s per-user licensing model, even if the software installs on several computers. Each developer using Visual Studio for development, testing or demonstration needs an appropriate license.
Verification checklist after purchase
- Confirm that the product is redeemed through Microsoft’s official activation process.
- Sign in with your own Microsoft account, not credentials supplied by the seller.
- Download the installer from Microsoft’s official downloads page.
- Keep the invoice, license description and seller correspondence.
- Test the refund process promptly if activation fails.
- Do not assume activation proves perpetual ownership or future transferability.
Verdict
Visual Studio Professional 2026 is real, and $299 would be cheaper than Microsoft’s observed $499 standalone price. But the evidence does not verify a 90% saving, and the third-party listing does not establish the license’s authorization, type, transferability or durability.
For an individual who can obtain clear written license terms and strong buyer protection, the offer may be worth investigating. For business-critical development, teams or anyone needing documented compliance, buy directly from Microsoft. If your work qualifies, Visual Studio Community may eliminate the purchase altogether.
