For the US 2025 buying market, the iPhone 16 was the best overall choice, the iPhone 16 Plus offered the best battery-life balance, the iPhone 16 Pro Max had the most versatile camera, and the iPhone 16e was the best low-cost option. The recommendations below are historical 2025 guidance: the iPhone 17 generation has since replaced the iPhone 16 family, so 2025 prices and availability should not be treated as current 2026 retail facts.
Prices varied by storage, retailer, trade-in, and carrier promotion. A carrier’s advertised monthly price or “free” phone also commonly depended on bill credits, an eligible plan, financing, and continued service.

Best overall: iPhone 16
The iPhone 16 was the safest recommendation for most 2025 buyers. It combined a modern A18 chip, Apple Intelligence compatibility, USB-C, MagSafe, Camera Control, a 48MP Fusion main camera, and an ultrawide camera without reaching Pro pricing.

#1 Best Overall
- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
It was a better long-term choice than the iPhone 16e for buyers who take varied photos. The ultrawide camera is useful for landscapes, architecture, interiors, large groups, and cramped rooms. The main camera also provides a 2x optical-quality crop, while computational photography features support Night mode, Portrait mode, and everyday travel and family photography.
The iPhone 16 does not have the dedicated telephoto camera found on the Pro models. That matters for distant subjects, longer portrait framing, and people who regularly photograph concerts, sports, wildlife, or travel details. For ordinary photos and 4K Dolby Vision video, however, its camera system is much more complete than the 16e’s single rear-camera setup.
Choose the iPhone 16 if you want one phone that balances camera flexibility, performance, size, battery life, accessories, and expected useful life. It is also the more sensible choice when the price difference from the 16e is small.
Best battery life for most people: iPhone 16 Plus
The iPhone 16 Plus offered the strongest battery-focused compromise in the 2025 lineup. Apple rated it for up to 27 hours of video playback—well above the standard iPhone 16’s 22-hour claim—while avoiding the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s price and Pro-camera bulk.
The Plus made sense for buyers who wanted a large display for video, reading, navigation, or games and did not need a dedicated telephoto lens or Pro video tools. Its camera approach was broadly similar to the iPhone 16’s, so the larger phone did not require giving up the standard model’s ultrawide camera.
The trade-off was physical size. A 6.7-inch-class phone is less comfortable for one-handed use and less pocket-friendly than the 6.1-inch-class iPhone 16 or 16e. The iPhone 16 Pro Max lasted longer according to Apple’s claim, but it also cost more and weighed more.

Choose the 16 Plus if battery endurance and screen size matter more than compact handling or maximum zoom. Compare it with a discounted 15 Plus, but do not pay nearly the same price for the older model unless Apple Intelligence is unimportant and the discount is meaningful.
Best camera: iPhone 16 Pro Max
“Best camera” means the most versatile camera system, not that every photo will look dramatically better than a photo from an iPhone 16. The iPhone 16 Pro Max added the hardware and recording tools that matter most to serious photographers and videographers:

- 48MP ultrawide camera
- Dedicated telephoto camera with longer-range optical-quality shooting
- ProRAW photography
- ProRes and more advanced video options
- LiDAR-related photography and augmented-reality capabilities
The dedicated telephoto camera is the key difference for many buyers. It provides framing flexibility that a crop from the main sensor cannot fully replace, particularly for distant subjects and longer portraits. The Pro models also offered a more advanced display experience and more headroom for demanding video workflows.
The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max were broadly similar in camera capability. The Pro Max’s practical advantages were its larger screen and battery, not an entirely different photographic experience. Apple rated the Pro Max for up to 33 hours of video playback, the highest figure among the models considered here.
Pay for the Pro Max if you will use telephoto shooting, ProRAW, ProRes, advanced video controls, the large display, or the maximum battery claim. If you mainly take family, food, travel, and social-media photos, the iPhone 16 is likely the better financial decision.
Best smaller Pro camera phone: iPhone 16 Pro
The iPhone 16 Pro was the choice for buyers who wanted most of the Pro camera platform without the Pro Max’s 6.9-inch-class body. It offered the same general advantages—dedicated telephoto capability, a 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultrawide camera, ProRAW, ProRes, and advanced video features—in a more manageable format.

- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
- Titanium frame and reinforced edges provide a premium, durable build, reducing weight compared to stainless steel while enhancing grip and making the phone easier to handle during long sessions of video recording, gaming, or editing.
- Camera system designed for versatility and precision, including ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto lenses with improved low-light and macro capabilities, giving photographers and creators a broader range of expressive tools while maintaining sharp details across the frame.
- Advanced Action button offers customizable shortcuts, allowing quick access to features like capturing photos, launching apps, controlling accessibility tools, or activating automation tasks without interrupting your workflow.
- Audio and video performance optimized for creators, with spatial audio, improved microphones, and stabilized video recording, providing professional-quality sound and smooth footage whether recording content, streaming, or joining video calls.
Apple rated the iPhone 16 Pro for up to 27 hours of video playback. You give up some screen area and absolute battery capacity compared with the Pro Max, but not most of the camera capability.
It was difficult to justify the Pro premium if the buyer never used telephoto photography, high-end video formats, or the premium display. In that case, the iPhone 16 delivered a stronger balance of useful features and price.
Best budget choice: iPhone 16e
The iPhone 16e launched at $599 for 128GB, with 256GB and 512GB options also available. It included the A18 chip, Apple Intelligence compatibility, USB-C, Face ID, satellite safety features, and a 48MP rear camera. Apple rated it for up to 26 hours of video playback.
What you get
- A current-generation chip and support for Apple Intelligence
- A compact 6.1-inch-class design
- A 48MP main camera with a 2x optical-quality crop
- Night mode, Portrait mode, computational photography, and 4K Dolby Vision video up to 60 frames per second
- USB-C and satellite safety features
- Strong claimed battery life for a smaller iPhone
What you give up
- No ultrawide camera. Apple’s “2-in-1” description refers to a crop or optical-quality framing mode from the 48MP main sensor; it does not mean two physical rear cameras.
- No MagSafe. Buyers invested in magnetic chargers, wallets, car mounts, or battery packs should account for replacement accessories.
- A less premium display experience than the Pro models
- Less design and color choice
- Potentially limiting 128GB base storage for heavy photo and video users
The 16e was best value only for buyers who accepted those compromises. It was a particularly strong choice for someone who wanted a compact phone, long claimed endurance, and current-generation performance but rarely used ultrawide photography or MagSafe accessories.

Battery life: what Apple’s numbers mean
Apple’s published maximum video-playback claims for the relevant models were:
Rank #4
- Premium Performance: Powered by the latest A18 Pro chip for ultra-fast performance, advanced AI features, seamless multitasking, and smooth gaming.
- Stunning 6.9" ProMotion Display: Super Retina XDR OLED display with adaptive 120Hz refresh rate for incredibly smooth scrolling and vibrant visuals.
- Pro-Level Camera System: Advanced 48MP main camera with enhanced zoom, Night mode, macro photography, and 4K Dolby Vision video recording.
- Accessories will not be original, but will be compatible and fully functional. Product may come in generic Box.
- Smartphone
| Model | Maximum video playback claimed by Apple |
|---|---|
| iPhone 16e | Up to 26 hours |
| iPhone 16 | Up to 22 hours |
| iPhone 16 Plus | Up to 27 hours |
| iPhone 16 Pro | Up to 27 hours |
| iPhone 16 Pro Max | Up to 33 hours |
| iPhone 15 | Up to 20 hours |
| iPhone 15 Plus | Up to 26 hours |
These are standardized manufacturer claims, not screen-on-time guarantees or independent endurance-test results. Cellular signal, brightness, camera use, gaming, streaming, background activity, temperature, and settings can materially change real-world results.
The Pro Max had the highest absolute claim. The 16 Plus was the more economical large-battery choice for people who did not need Pro cameras. The 16e’s claimed endurance was especially notable for a compact model. Apple attributed its efficiency partly to the A18 chip, the C1 cellular modem, internal design, and iOS power management; that is Apple’s explanation, not proof that it will outperform every competing phone in every usage pattern.
Camera comparison
| Model | Rear-camera approach | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 16e | 48MP main camera with 2x optical-quality crop | Everyday photos and video on a budget |
| iPhone 16 and 16 Plus | 48MP Fusion main camera plus ultrawide | Travel, family, food, interiors, and general photography |
| iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max | 48MP main, 48MP ultrawide, and dedicated telephoto | Zoom, serious photography, Pro video, and maximum flexibility |
The standard iPhone 16 should be described as highly capable, not identical to the Pro models. The missing telephoto lens matters when the subject is far away or when the photographer wants longer portrait framing. Conversely, many buyers will not benefit enough from that flexibility to justify the Pro price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the iPhone 15 still worth buying?
Yes, but only when the final price is substantially below the iPhone 16e or iPhone 16 and the buyer does not care about Apple Intelligence. The iPhone 15 offered USB-C, a 48MP main camera, an ultrawide camera, and a modern design, making it a reasonable phone for calls, messaging, maps, social media, and conventional photography.
Its important long-term disadvantage was compatibility: the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus were not equivalent Apple Intelligence choices. If the price was close to a newer 16e, the 16e offered a newer chip and better future positioning. If the price was close to an iPhone 16, the standard 16 was the stronger purchase.
The iPhone 15 Plus remained relevant as a clearance large-screen option. Apple rated it for up to 26 hours of video playback, but compare its final price, storage, warranty, and remaining feature runway before buying.
Best Value
- The larger 6.9-inch display enhances productivity and media consumption, giving extra room for multitasking, side-by-side apps, and immersive viewing without feeling unwieldy in hand.
- Camera improvements focus on ultra-wide performance, capturing more detail at the edges of the frame and reducing distortion, making landscape shots, group photos, and architecture photography cleaner.
- Refined gesture controls and haptic feedback make interactions feel more precise, so scrolling, tapping, or switching between apps is smoother and more satisfying compared to previous Plus models.
- Audio enhancements optimize speaker output for spatial awareness, delivering clearer separation between instruments and voices in music, video playback, and FaceTime calls without relying on headphones.
- Durable yet lightweight materials balance heft and portability, with a subtly textured back and reinforced edges that improve grip while maintaining the premium appearance expected from the Plus series.
Apple Intelligence and future value
The iPhone 16e, 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max were designed for Apple Intelligence. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus were not equivalent choices for that feature set. Availability of individual features, languages, and regions could change over time.
Apple Intelligence was a future-positioning factor rather than an automatic reason to spend more. Buyers who wanted calls, messaging, maps, social media, and conventional photography could receive more value from the 16e—or from a deeply discounted iPhone 15 if the feature was irrelevant. Compatibility also did not guarantee that every future feature would run on every model.
Choose the right size
- 6.1-inch class: iPhone 16e and iPhone 16. Best for portability and one-handed use.
- 6.3-inch class: iPhone 16 Pro. More screen and Pro features without Max size.
- 6.7-inch class: iPhone 16 Plus. Large-screen value and battery life.
- 6.9-inch class: iPhone 16 Pro Max. Maximum screen and battery, but least pocket-friendly.
How much storage should you buy?
- 128GB: Suitable for basic users, cloud-storage users, and people who rarely record video.
- 256GB: The best default for many buyers who planned to keep the phone several years.
- 512GB or more: Appropriate for heavy photographers, frequent 4K-video shooters, gamers, and people who keep large offline media libraries.
Compare storage-specific prices rather than only entry-level prices. A 256GB phone can be the better financial decision if 128GB forces an early upgrade or requires recurring cloud storage. Apple’s iCloud+ can help with backups and photo storage, but it adds a recurring cost.
Buying by budget and use case
- Around $600: Choose the iPhone 16e if you can live without an ultrawide camera and MagSafe.
- Most midrange 2025 budgets: Choose the iPhone 16 for the best overall balance.
- Battery and large screen: Choose the iPhone 16 Plus unless the Pro camera system is essential.
- Premium camera: Choose the iPhone 16 Pro for a smaller body or the Pro Max for maximum battery and screen size.
- Clearance bargain: Consider the iPhone 15 or 15 Plus only after comparing the final price and confirming that Apple Intelligence is unimportant.
Unlocked, carrier, refurbished, and used buying advice
Compare total cost, not the headline monthly payment
An unlocked purchase from Apple generally makes the carrier relationship simpler and can reduce switching restrictions. Carrier promotions can be cheaper, but a headline such as “free iPhone” commonly means bill credits over a defined period and may require:
- A qualifying unlimited plan
- New-line activation or an eligible upgrade
- Device financing
- Continued service for the full credit period
- A qualifying trade-in
Credits can stop if the customer cancels service, changes eligibility, or leaves before the promotional period ends. Compare the phone payment, plan cost, trade-in value, activation charges, and remaining service commitment. Review Apple’s carrier-offer terms rather than treating the promotional credit as an unconditional discount.
Trade-ins and insurance
Apple Trade In offers change by device, condition, and date. A private sale may bring more money, but it requires more effort and buyer-risk management. AppleCare+ pricing varies by model, plan type, and purchase date; check the current terms at Apple’s iPhone support page.
Used and refurbished models
A refurbished iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, or 14 Pro could offer a better camera or premium display per dollar than a new 16e. Check battery health, warranty, return period, Activation Lock status, parts and repair history, carrier compatibility, storage, and seller reputation. Do not assume a used phone remains water-resistant after prior repairs, and do not compare an unverified marketplace price with a new unlocked price as if they were equivalent.
Final verdict
Buy the iPhone 16 if you want the safest all-around 2025 choice. Buy the iPhone 16 Plus for the best large-screen battery balance, the iPhone 16 Pro Max for the most versatile camera and longest claimed endurance, and the iPhone 16 Pro when you want Pro cameras in a smaller body. Choose the iPhone 16e when price, compact size, battery life, and current-generation performance matter more than ultrawide photography and MagSafe. Buy an iPhone 15 or 15 Plus only when clearance pricing makes the older generation meaningfully cheaper and Apple Intelligence is not important.
