Virchow Medical Raises $4 Million to Develop Biopsy Specimen Storage and Expand U.S. Pilots

Virchow Medical says its $4 million seed round will fund development of a repository for biopsy-needle specimens and expand U.S. pilots; clinical study results have not been reported.

Virchow Medical announced a $4 million seed financing on March 24, 2026, led by Cerberus Ventures, to complete development of its Virchow Vault specimen repository and expand biopsy-catchment pilot programs at U.S. medical institutions. The company says its Crow’s Nest device collects cells left on biopsy needles for possible later molecular testing. The announcement describes concordance studies underway at six U.S. institutions, but reports no results that establish the approach’s performance or clinical benefit.

What Virchow Medical’s $4 million financing will fund

The seed round was led by Cerberus Ventures, with five physicians who use Virchow technologies also participating. Virchow said Cerberus Ventures managing director Chenny Zhang would join its board. The financing was announced March 24, 2026; the company’s news index lists the announcement.

Virchow said it plans to use the proceeds to complete development of the Virchow Vault and deploy additional Biopsy Catchment pilot programs at medical institutions across the United States. Those are stated plans, not confirmation that development or deployment has been completed. The financing announcement also includes CEO Alexander Arrow’s description of the goal: educating oncology, pathology, radiology, and reference-lab communities about banking genetic material from used biopsy needles.

How Crow’s Nest and the Virchow Vault are described to work

Collecting material left on a needle

Virchow describes Crow’s Nest as a portable, disposable device used after a core needle tumor biopsy. It is intended to collect cells dislodged onto the used needle—material that would otherwise be discarded—and create what the company calls a Liquid Companion Specimen (LCS). The company’s grant opportunities page similarly describes a procedure-site tool that creates a second specimen from cells remaining on the needle.

Storing and ordering later tests

Under Virchow’s described workflow, hospital subscribers receive device units and can store LCSs in the Virchow Vault, then order genomic sequencing or other molecular testing after the biopsy. The company presents this as a way to retain material that might otherwise be unavailable for later testing if formalin-fixed tissue is insufficient. This is a description of the company’s proposed service, not independent confirmation of availability, regulatory status, or clinical validation.

What is known about clinical evidence

Virchow’s announcement says six U.S. medical institutions are running concordance studies comparing molecular test results from standard formalin-fixed tissue with results from Crow’s Nest LCSs. It does not report a concordance rate, patient count, outcome data, or a study publication. The announcement therefore does not establish that LCS testing is equivalent to standard tissue testing, improves treatment decisions, or reduces repeat biopsies.

Virchow frames residual needle material as a possible additional source for testing and treatment selection, potentially reducing the need for another biopsy when standard tissue is unavailable or inadequate. Those are the company’s rationale and intended benefits, not quantified findings in the financing announcement. The company’s grant program solicits research into clinical, health-economic, and biobanking uses of recovered cells and analytes; its existence does not itself demonstrate those uses have been validated.

Why the distinction matters for hospitals and patients

The proposed workflow depends on more than collecting cells: institutions would need to incorporate a proprietary device and specimen-storage process, and molecular testing would still need to be ordered and interpreted. The public announcement does not specify implementation requirements, test menus, costs, or how results would affect care. For now, the financing news signals Virchow’s plan to develop the repository and broaden pilots, while the clinical value of the specimens remains to be established by reported study results.
