The viral image does not show a real Temu warehouse fire. It was generated with AI, first posted as a joke, and later reposted without its original context as if it were evidence of a real event. The creator confirmed that explanation to AFP on January 4, 2025.
There was also no official report substantiating the specific warehouse-fire claim when AFP checked through January 7, 2025. That is a time-bounded finding about this rumor—not proof that no unrelated Temu-connected or other warehouse fire could ever have occurred.

What the viral post claimed
The late-December 2024 post claimed:
“A 57,000 square foot Temu warehouse in China went up in flames today. The total loss of inventory has been estimated to be as high as $56.19 USD.”
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
The extremely low loss estimate was part of the joke: it implied that Temu products were so inexpensive that a warehouse full of inventory would be worth only a small amount. Other reposts changed the alleged loss to figures such as $246.19 or $352.45.

The wording was posted on X by the account @DocAtCDI on December 30, 2024. It should be read as a social-media claim and satire, not as a reported description of an actual fire.

- A Grok watermark: The lower-right corner retained a visible mark associated with an AI image-generation workflow.
- The wrong company name: The building signage reportedly reads “TEHU,” not “TEMU.”
- An inaccurate logo: The sign does not reproduce Temu’s official branding correctly.
- Distorted lettering: Other text in the image is garbled or illegible, a common warning sign in AI-generated scenes.
These visual details are useful corroboration, but they are not the strongest evidence on their own. Watermarks can be cropped or removed, and visual oddities can appear in genuine photographs. In this case, they align with source tracing and the creator’s direct confirmation.

Demagog also reported that an AI-image detector assessed the probability of AI generation as very high. Detector scores should be treated only as supporting evidence: they can produce false positives and false negatives.

How the image was traced to its source
Reverse-image searches led fact-checkers to earlier X uploads in which the image’s AI watermark and original context were still visible. Later copies circulated on Facebook and other platforms after those clues—or the accompanying joke—had been removed.
AFP identified the earliest relevant post as coming from @DocAtCDI. The account holder told AFP on January 4, 2025, that they had created the image with AI and intended it “simply” as a joke. The creator said the watermark was deliberately left visible so viewers would understand that the image was AI-generated.

This distinction matters. The original satirical post, later meme reposts, and posts that presented the image as genuine breaking news do not necessarily reflect the same intent. Once the watermark and caption were stripped away, viewers could reasonably mistake the image for documentation of a real fire.
The rumor spread after its context was removed
AFP documented versions of the image circulating internationally in English, Korean, Thai, French, Tagalog and other languages. Reposts appeared across platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, iFunny, Imgur and YouTube, according to TechJuice.
Best Value
Reported engagement figures refer to individual posts and vary over time. TechJuice reported that one X post received more than 100,000 likes and 2.7 million views, while other reposts reportedly generated different totals. Those figures should not be combined into a definitive estimate of the rumor’s total reach.
The image also fit an existing satirical pattern. AFP reported that Irish satire outlet The Waterford Whispers News published a similar Temu-warehouse-fire joke in a video uploaded on September 3, 2024. The same X account had previously posted another AI-generated image depicting a burning Temu building.
What the evidence establishes—and what it does not
Established
- The viral image is AI-generated, not an authentic photograph of a burning warehouse.
- The image was originally shared as a joke.
- The image included a Grok watermark, incorrect “Tehu” signage and an inaccurate Temu logo.
- AFP found no official reports substantiating the specific Temu warehouse-fire claim as of January 7, 2025.
Not established
- That no Temu seller, logistics contractor or unrelated warehouse has ever experienced a fire.
- That every person who reposted the image knew it was fabricated.
- That Temu, xAI or Grok created, endorsed or disseminated the rumor.
- That a later event—after the January 7, 2025 verification cutoff—would change the status of this December 2024 image.
Temu’s real connections to Chinese sellers and cross-border logistics do not authenticate a building shown in an image. The rumor supplied no identifiable city, address, facility name, local authority, fire-service report, date-stamped footage or independent eyewitness evidence.

- Inspect the image closely. Look for AI-tool watermarks, misspelled signs, malformed logos, repeated objects and unreadable text.
- Search the full image and distinctive crops. Cropping can reveal earlier versions that retain a watermark or original caption.
- Find the earliest identifiable upload. Compare dates, captions, labels and whether the first poster described the image as satire or AI-generated.
- Look for event details. A genuine incident should usually have at least some combination of a location, date, facility identity, local authority, emergency-service record or independent reporting.
- Check credible coverage with a clear date boundary. “No reports found” is not conclusive by itself, but it becomes meaningful when combined with source history and image-level evidence.
- Use AI detectors cautiously. Their output can support an assessment but cannot replace tracing the image to its source.
If an image is reproduced in coverage, it should be labeled prominently: “AI-generated image; does not show a real Temu warehouse fire.”
