Re:

Nvidia’s OpenAI Investment Wasn’t Simply Canceled: What the $100 Billion Plan Really Means

Nvidia denied that its relationship with OpenAI was breaking down, but the full $100 billion investment was never confirmed and later became unlikely.

Jensen Huang pushed back against reports that Nvidia’s relationship with OpenAI was breaking down, saying on January 31, 2026, that Nvidia would participate in OpenAI’s current funding round and invest “a great deal of money.” But he did not confirm a $100 billion investment—and later said the full amount was probably not going to happen.

The clearest reading is that Nvidia continued to support OpenAI while the scale and structure of the original proposal changed. The headline figure was a conditional maximum in a nonbinding letter of intent, not a completed $100 billion payment.

What happened between Nvidia and OpenAI?

The dispute centers on two related but separate questions: whether Nvidia and OpenAI’s strategic relationship was in trouble, and whether Nvidia would still invest in OpenAI.

A January 31 TechCrunch report, citing reporting from The Wall Street Journal, said Nvidia was reconsidering the size or structure of its proposed investment. The reported concerns included the economics of the transaction, OpenAI’s business strategy, competition from companies such as Anthropic and Google, and the fact that the original arrangement was not yet a finalized commitment.

Speaking in Taipei that day, Huang called the reported friction “nonsense.” He said Nvidia would “definitely participate” in OpenAI’s current funding round and invest a substantial amount, but he declined to give a dollar figure.

That was a rejection of the idea that the companies were breaking apart. It was not confirmation that Nvidia would invest the full $100 billion.

What Nvidia originally announced

On September 22, 2025, Nvidia and OpenAI announced a proposed infrastructure partnership. According to Nvidia’s announcement, the plan involved:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • At least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems for OpenAI infrastructure.
  • Nvidia’s intention to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI.
  • Investment made progressively as each gigawatt was deployed.
  • A target for the first gigawatt to be deployed in the second half of 2026 using Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform.

The announcement was explicitly described as a letter of intent. That distinction matters. “Up to $100 billion” described the maximum amount contemplated by the framework, not money that Nvidia had already transferred or necessarily promised to pay in one transaction.

The arrangement also combined different types of activity: Nvidia could invest equity in OpenAI, while OpenAI planned to deploy Nvidia systems in large data centers. Those transactions were strategically connected but were not the same thing as a completed equity investment.

Was the $100 billion deal legally binding?

The public announcement does not establish that Nvidia had completed, or was unconditionally obligated to complete, a $100 billion investment. It was a letter of intent containing plans, targets and forward-looking statements.

The cautious description is therefore an announced investment framework or proposed partnership. A definitive investment agreement, securities filing or closing announcement would be needed to establish the amount actually funded, OpenAI’s valuation, Nvidia’s ownership stake and the legal obligations of each company.

This does not mean that no part of the relationship could become binding. It means the public September announcement alone is not proof of a finalized $100 billion financing.

What Huang did—and did not—confirm

Question Best-supported answer
Did Nvidia and OpenAI remain strategic partners? Yes, based on Huang’s January comments and OpenAI’s statement.
Did Nvidia say it would invest in OpenAI? Yes. Huang said Nvidia would participate in the current funding round.
Did Huang confirm a $100 billion investment? No. He confirmed a large investment but gave no amount.
Was the original announcement proof of a completed financing? No. It was a letter of intent tied to a staged infrastructure plan.
Was the full $100 billion still expected? Not according to Huang’s later comments.

The later update changed the picture

On March 4, 2026, Huang gave a more specific assessment. Bloomberg reported that he said a $100 billion Nvidia investment in OpenAI was “probably not in the cards.” Huang pointed to OpenAI’s preparations for a possible public offering and suggested Nvidia’s latest investment could be its last opportunity to invest while OpenAI remained private.

That later statement helps reconcile the apparently conflicting reports. In January, Huang defended continued cooperation and confirmed participation in a funding round. In March, he indicated that the original maximum amount was unlikely.

The episode is therefore better understood as a possible downsizing or restructuring—not as proof that Nvidia had abandoned OpenAI, and not as evidence that the full $100 billion had been funded.

Why might the amount have changed?

Some explanations remain reported possibilities rather than confirmed motives.

  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system
  • The infrastructure plan was enormous. A 10-gigawatt buildout requires substantial power, data-center construction, financing and execution. Investment tied to deployment would naturally depend on whether those milestones were reached.
  • OpenAI’s financing needs may have evolved. A new funding structure could reduce the need for Nvidia to provide capital under the original framework.
  • A potential IPO could change the timing. If OpenAI moved toward a public offering, Nvidia might have less reason to make a very large private investment.
  • Nvidia could face concentration risk. Investing heavily in one AI developer would expose the chipmaker to that company’s ability to grow, monetize its products and maintain demand for Nvidia systems.
  • The arrangement could attract circular-financing scrutiny. Nvidia investing in a customer that uses capital to buy Nvidia hardware can make the relationship look financially circular. That does not establish wrongdoing, but it makes the economics more important to examine.

Huang’s IPO explanation is the one directly associated with his later remarks. The other considerations are analytical risks surrounding a supplier-investor relationship, not proof of Nvidia’s internal reasoning.

Why this matters to investors

For Nvidia investors, the proposal offered potential benefits: a major future customer, stronger alignment with one of the leading AI developers and equity exposure to OpenAI. It also carried risks involving customer concentration, private-company valuation, infrastructure execution and the possibility that OpenAI could diversify toward custom chips or competing suppliers.

For OpenAI, Nvidia’s involvement could provide capital and dependable access to computing systems. The trade-off would be greater dependence on one supplier and added complexity if equity investment, hardware purchases, data-center leases or other financing arrangements were linked.

Most importantly, the announcement did not by itself establish Nvidia revenue. A proposed 10-gigawatt deployment is not the same as a booked sale, delivered system or binding purchase order. Investors should not treat the headline infrastructure figure as guaranteed future revenue without supporting filings or contracts.

How to verify whether the original deal was completed

Readers assessing future headlines should look for concrete transaction evidence rather than relying on the original announcement’s maximum figure:

  1. A definitive investment agreement.
  2. Nvidia filings reporting the investment.
  3. OpenAI financing disclosures.
  4. The dollar amount actually funded.
  5. OpenAI’s valuation and Nvidia’s resulting ownership stake.
  6. Binding infrastructure, purchase, lease or construction agreements.
  7. Evidence that the planned gigawatts are under construction or deployed.

The OpenAI announcement and Nvidia’s original release establish the proposed partnership, but they do not independently establish that the entire transaction closed.

What the status means in plain English

  • The relationship: Still active based on the public statements available.
  • Nvidia’s near-term investment intent: Huang said Nvidia would participate in OpenAI’s current funding round.
  • The $100 billion figure: A maximum amount in the original framework, not a confirmed completed investment.
  • The legal status of the public announcement: A letter of intent rather than proof of a finalized $100 billion contract.
  • The eventual scale: Huang later said the full $100 billion was probably not going to happen.

So the accurate conclusion is not that Nvidia simply canceled a $100 billion investment. Nvidia pushed back against the characterization of a relationship breakdown and continued to signal support for OpenAI. But the original headline amount was conditional, staged and nonbinding in its public form—and later comments indicated that Nvidia was unlikely to reach the full ceiling.
