Verizon reported that an employee improperly accessed or handled a file containing personal information about 63,206 employees in 2023. The company said it had no evidence at the time that the information was misused or shared outside Verizon. Public reporting does not establish the precise technical cause, so “simple mistake” should not be read as a confirmed explanation.
What happened in the Verizon employee data breach?
Reports based on Verizon’s notice to affected individuals say an employee obtained or handled a file containing sensitive employee information without authorization and in violation of company policy. The incident occurred on or around September 21, 2023, and Verizon discovered it on December 12, 2023. The company reported that 63,206 employees were affected.
The incident was reported in February 2024 by BleepingComputer and SecurityWeek. SecurityWeek quoted Verizon’s notification: “A Verizon employee obtained a file containing certain employee personal information without authorization and in violation of company policy.”
What information was exposed?
The records did not contain identical information for every affected employee. Depending on the person, the file could include:

- Gender and union affiliation
- Date of birth
- Compensation information
These details create potential identity-theft and privacy risks, but the reports do not say that every listed data type applied to every employee.
Did the breach affect Verizon customers?
The reported incident concerned employee records, not customer information. The contemporaneous accounts said the breach did not appear to involve customer data.

Was the information misused or shared outside Verizon?
Verizon said it had no evidence at the time that the file had been misused or shared externally. Rich Young, a Verizon spokesman, told BleepingComputer: “At this point, we have no reason to believe the information was improperly used or that it was shared outside of Verizon.” That describes what the company said its investigation had found then; it is not proof that misuse was impossible or a guarantee about what may happen later.
What did Verizon offer affected employees?
In reports published in 2024, Verizon said it was providing affected people instructions to enroll in two years of identity theft protection and credit monitoring. It also said it was strengthening technical controls and notifying applicable regulators. The reported offer does not establish that enrollment remains available now, and monitoring cannot guarantee that information will not be misused.

What is known—and not known—about the cause?
The public reporting supports a limited conclusion: an employee accessed or handled a sensitive file in a way Verizon said violated company policy. It does not establish whether the event stemmed from a mistaken click, a permissions error, a process weakness, or another specific cause. Nor does it establish the employee’s motive. Calling it a “simple mistake” goes beyond what the available reporting proves.
Verizon’s 2024 Form 10-K, filed February 12, 2025, says the company had a comprehensive enterprise incident-response plan and required annual cybersecurity and data-privacy training for full- and part-time employees. Those company-wide statements do not identify which control, if any, failed in this incident or document what specific remediation was completed for it.

What the incident means for handling sensitive records
The practical lesson is broader than telling employees to be more careful. A sensitive file can create risk even when there is no reported outside attacker: access needs to be limited to people with a business need, handling rules must be clear, and organizations need ways to detect inappropriate access promptly. The time between the reported incident date and Verizon’s discovery date also shows why detection matters alongside prevention; the available reports do not explain what caused that interval.
For individuals, a company’s statement that it has no evidence of misuse is useful context, not a reason to assume the information can never be used. People who receive a breach notice should follow its specific steps, watch financial and identity-related accounts, and treat unexpected requests for personal or account information cautiously.
