That is an estimate of customer spending on the marketplace, not a financial result published by Valve. The roughly 336–350 employee figure comes from records tied to litigation around 2021, not a confirmed current headcount. Dividing the two produces an illustrative figure of about $46.3 million–$48.2 million in gross sales per historical employee—not profit or verified revenue per employee.
What does the $16.2 billion Steam figure measure?
It is Alinea Analytics’ estimate of Steam gross game sales for the first 11 months of 2025, as reported by Tom’s Hardware and discussed in follow-up reporting by PC Gamer. In practical terms, gross sales describe spending through Steam; they do not tell readers how much of that money Valve retained.

Valve has not published an audited 2025 figure establishing that it recognized $16.2 billion as revenue. Because Valve is privately held, the available estimate does not establish its 2025 revenue or profit. The amount Valve retained from those sales is also not specified by this estimate.
How many employees does Valve have?
The “350 employees” headline traces to historical reporting based on records disclosed in litigation. Those records put Valve’s workforce at roughly 336–350 people around 2021; the range is reported in PC Gamer’s account and in Ars Technica’s reporting. It should not be presented as Valve’s current 2026 headcount.

Valve’s New Employee Handbook, quoted by Tom’s Hardware, says: “Our profitability per employee is higher than that of Google or Amazon or Microsoft, and we believe strongly that the right thing to do in that case is to put a maximum amount of money back into each employee’s pocket.” This is a statement in the handbook, not a current executive disclosure of Valve’s headcount or financial results.

The calculation combines sales estimated for January–November 2025 with an employee count from around 2021. It is therefore an illustration, not a matched-period productivity measure. Nor is it an estimate of profit, employee pay, or revenue Valve recognized. Ars Technica separately estimated Valve’s total employee pay in 2021 at just under $450 million from litigation-disclosed data; that historical payroll analysis is a different measure from Steam sales.

In October 2026 reporting, Alinea Analytics’ estimates put Steam sales at $16.5 billion for the first nine months of 2026, including an estimated $1.7 billion in September, according to Tom’s Hardware. These are analyst estimates for a partial year, not Valve accounts. They should not be annualized as a full-year result or treated as confirmation of the separate 2025 estimate.

How to read the headline accurately
- “Steam sales” is the accurate description for the $16.2 billion estimate; calling it confirmed Valve revenue overstates what the estimate establishes.
- “About 350 employees” describes a historical workforce estimate around 2021, not a current count.
- “Per employee” is a division of two figures from different periods. It does not measure profit or take-home pay per worker.
- “Estimate” matters: neither the 2025 nor the reported 2026 sales figure is a disclosed, audited Valve result.
