The January 2025 “short list” of possible U.S. agriculture secretaries was a reported field of 16 people, not an official list of nominees. President Donald Trump announced Brooke Rollins as his nominee on January 20, 2025. The people named in the earlier reporting had different paths: some planned to stay in elected or agricultural leadership roles, while others worked in state government, consulting, or agribusiness.
What “short list” meant
Agriculture.com/Successful Farming’s article, updated January 11, 2025, described 16 individuals rumored to be in consideration. It called the field a “short list” while noting that it was “actually a long one.” These were reported possibilities, not 16 formal nominees. The article’s returned text includes the 12 people below; it does not expose every profile, so this is not a complete roster. Read the January 2025 article.
Who was named, and what path did the article describe?
The paths below are descriptions published in January 2025, not verified statements of each person’s role today.
| Person | January 2025 description and reported path |
|---|---|
| Kelly Loeffler | Some reports had widely expected her to be Trump’s pick. After Rollins was announced, Loeffler was set to lead the Small Business Administration. |
| Abel Maldonado | The former California lieutenant governor and state senator continued to own Runway Vineyards and held no elected office at the time of publication. |
| Zippy Duvall | As president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, he said he looked forward to continuing in that role. |
| Mike Conaway | The former Texas representative and House Agriculture Committee chair was described as a private agricultural policy consultant. |
| Ray Starling | The former USDA chief of staff was described as an executive advisor and North Carolina Chamber of Commerce general counsel involved in agriculture strategy. |
| Charles Herbster | The Nebraska farmer and agribusinessman was described as owning agricultural and cattle operations and expressing support for Rollins. |
| Sid Miller | The article described him as Texas agriculture commissioner, serving a third term and up for reelection in 2026. That is the article’s 2025 description, not a verified election outcome. |
| Gregg Doud | He was president and CEO of the National Milk Producers Federation and had previously served as U.S. chief agricultural negotiator. |
| Thomas Massie | The U.S. representative had expressed willingness to help the administration, but the article reported no specific commitment or offer. |
| Aurelia Skipwith Giacometto | The former U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service director had been Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality secretary since January 2024, according to the article. |
| Cindy Hyde-Smith | The U.S. senator from Mississippi said she planned to remain in the Senate and seek reelection in 2026. |
| G.T. Thompson | The U.S. representative and House Agriculture Committee chair was described as continuing in that congressional leadership role in 2025. |
Brooke Rollins was selected as the nominee
On January 20, 2025, the White House announced Brooke Rollins as Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Agriculture, rather than Loeffler or another person discussed in the earlier reporting. The White House announcement establishes the nomination, not the subsequent status of every person who had been rumored to be under consideration.

Later developments do not establish everyone’s current role
The U.S. Senate nominations tracker lists a Markwayne Mullin Secretary of Agriculture nomination dated March 5, 2026, with a March 23, 2026 outcome shown as “54–45 No.” The Senate tracker records that result but does not, by itself, establish who holds the office on October 8, 2026. USDA also published political appointment announcements in January 2026 and rural leadership appointments in June 2026; neither announcement resolves the officeholder question. USDA’s January announcement and USDA Rural Development’s June announcement concern appointments, not a complete update to the 16-person reported field.
Accordingly, the January 2025 profiles are best read as a historical snapshot. The cited reporting does not establish the current roles or later career plans of all 16 people, and the Senate result cited above does not supply a definitive current Secretary as of October 8, 2026.
