The U.S. government reportedly transferred 9,261 bitcoin, worth about $770 million at the time, to Coinbase Prime over October 6–7, 2026. The transfer does not establish that the bitcoin was sold, and the government had not confirmed its purpose in the report.
What was transferred?
Cointelegraph reported the two-day movement, citing Galaxy Research’s tracing of the flows. The total was 9,261 BTC, with a contemporaneous estimated value of about $770 million. That dollar figure is a report-time estimate, not an official government valuation or accounting.
The reported sources were not all equally clear:
- Galaxy Research attributed roughly half of the transfer to bitcoin recovered from the Bitfinex hackers.
- Another portion was attributed to known Binance seizures.
- Galaxy identified 2,456 BTC in holdings not previously identified as government funds. Its suggestion that these could be new law-enforcement seizures is an analytics inference, not a publicly disclosed seizure record.
Cointelegraph attributed this breakdown to Galaxy Research; it is not an independently confirmed government accounting. Cointelegraph said the U.S. Marshals Service and Department of Justice had been contacted for comment, but no agency confirmation of the transfer’s purpose was available in the report.
Did the U.S. government sell the Bitcoin?
No sale is established by the reported transfer. A blockchain movement to Coinbase Prime shows a destination, not what happened to the bitcoin afterward or why it was moved.

Arkham’s July 2026 analysis of earlier government-linked deposits described several possible explanations: custody consolidation, internal portfolio management, or preparation for liquidation. These were possibilities for earlier deposits, not evidence of intent in this October transfer. Coinbase Prime provides institutional custody and other services, so a deposit there cannot by itself be treated as proof of a sale.
Why move seized Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime?
Custody is one plausible explanation. Cointelegraph reported that Coinbase Prime has served as a custody provider for U.S. Marshals Service seized assets since 2024. That relationship provides context for the destination, but does not confirm that custody was the purpose of this particular transfer.

The available evidence should be kept in three separate categories:
- Transaction: the reported bitcoin moved to Coinbase Prime over two days.
- Analytics: Galaxy Research attributed portions of the bitcoin to particular seizure-related holdings, including a previously unidentified 2,456 BTC.
- Official disposition: no government statement in the report confirmed why the bitcoin moved or whether it was sold, retained, or otherwise handled.
Where did the 2,456 BTC come from?
Galaxy Research identified 2,456 BTC from holdings not previously identified as government funds and suggested they may represent new law-enforcement seizures, according to Cointelegraph. The public information described in the report does not establish a specific seizure, case, or agency action behind those coins. Treat “new seizures” as a possible interpretation of wallet data, not a confirmed origin.

What does the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve order say?
The White House established the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and the United States Digital Asset Stockpile by executive order on March 6, 2025. The order says qualifying bitcoin that is finally forfeited and held by Treasury is to be included in the Reserve, subject to specified requirements and releases. It states: “Government BTC deposited into the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve shall not be sold and shall be maintained as reserve assets of the United States utilized to meet governmental objectives in accordance with applicable law.”
The order does not establish that every bitcoin in the reported Coinbase Prime transfer had already been deposited into the Reserve. It also addresses other forfeited digital assets separately, directing them to the Digital Asset Stockpile and allowing for lawful stewardship, court orders, victim returns, law-enforcement operations, equitable sharing, and specified statutory requirements. The reported transfer alone therefore does not show that the order was violated.
