CryptoSlate valued that at about $923 on Oct. 7, so the headline rounds up. The “$5 billion” is a what-if, not a loss. It adds the 565,056 ETH that Bitquery estimated had exited or was queued to exit from MetaMask-operated validators to the 1,398,922 ETH already waiting to enter Ethereum, then prices the total at $2,564.19 per ETH. Neither figure is a confirmed loss of customer principal. For stakers, the real exposure is time: how long an exit, a withdrawal and any later re-entry take.
What each number measures
The headline combines a small, measured amount with a large hypothetical. The table keeps them apart and shows who produced each figure and when.
| Figure | What it measures | Who reported it | Snapshot | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.36 ETH (about $923) | Block tips diverted across 18 blocks; the ETH was still in the receiving wallet when checked | Bitquery (ETH amount); CryptoSlate (dollar value) | Bitquery’s chain check; CryptoSlate’s Oct. 7 price | Measured on-chain; the dollar value depends on the price used |
| 16,965 validators, 565,056 ETH | Validators counted as exited or queued to exit | Bitquery | Early Oct. 1 | Bitquery’s estimate; MetaMask has not confirmed this count |
| 822,405 ETH | Ethereum-wide exit queue | CryptoSlate | Oct. 7 | Volatile snapshot; includes exits from many operators, not only MetaMask’s |
| 1,398,922 ETH | Ethereum-wide entry queue | CryptoSlate | Oct. 7 | Volatile snapshot |
| 1,963,978 ETH, about $5.04 billion | Entry backlog plus the whole MetaMask cohort, assumed to return as new deposits | Calculated from CryptoSlate’s inputs | Oct. 7 backlog at $2,564.19 per ETH | Conditional scenario, not a loss |
What MetaMask and Bitquery have established
MetaMask’s update of Oct. 1, 2026 said it was responding to an incident affecting part of its infrastructure and had exited affected validators with partners as a precaution. It said: “Based on our investigation to date, there is no indication that MetaMask wallets or customer funds have been affected.” The company also said its staking operations are non-custodial and that it does not manage withdrawal keys for stake on behalf of clients. That update is the most recent company statement cited here, and it does not give a root cause.
Bitquery’s chain analysis measured the 0.36 ETH in diverted tips. Its cohort count is its own estimate from an early Oct. 1 snapshot. Bitquery says it identified validators beyond MetaMask’s own by matching Lido’s published validator keys and fee-recipient messages, so the cohort includes stake operated for Lido. MetaMask has not confirmed the total.

Several points remain open in the sources cited here:
- How the intruder got in. Bitquery says on-chain data cannot establish this.
- Whether signing keys were compromised, as opposed to the settings around them. Bitquery says the chain data cannot settle this.
- The root cause, which MetaMask’s public update does not give.
- Slashing. None of the sources cited here reports it.
How Ethereum’s exit and entry queues work
Ethereum limits how many validators can enter or leave in each period, so the active validator set cannot change abruptly. The two directions run as separate queues. Leaving does not directly use up entry capacity; ETH uses entry capacity only if it is deposited again.

Exiting and getting ETH back
- An exit message is submitted for the validator. MetaMask’s help center treats this as a separate step from the wait that follows.
- The validator waits in the exit queue. The wait depends on how many other validators are leaving at the same time. CoinDesk reported an estimated wait near 14 days in early October.
- After the validator exits, the protocol sweeps the exited balance so it can be claimed. The sweep happens in protocol state updates rather than as a transaction you send yourself, so the claimable balance appears without a separate user step.
Re-entering the validator set
New stake waits in the entry queue. Entry is capped at 256 ETH per 6.4-minute epoch, which is 57,600 ETH per day across the 225 epochs in a day. At that rate, the 1,398,922 ETH backlog CryptoSlate recorded on Oct. 7 is about 24.3 days of entry capacity, consistent with its estimated wait of 24 days and seven hours. MetaMask’s help center gives a separate activation rate of roughly 1,800 per day, undated and labelled “at the time of writing.” If each activation is a 32 ETH validator, that rate also works out to 57,600 ETH per day, so the two sources agree on capacity.

| Queue | Oct. 7 snapshot (CryptoSlate) | Other readings (CoinDesk) | Rate basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exit | 822,405 ETH | About 851,000 ETH on Oct. 2; about 786,000 ETH with an estimated wait near 14 days on Oct. 5 | MetaMask help center: roughly 3,375 validator exits per day, undated |
| Entry | 1,398,922 ETH; estimated wait 24 days and 7 hours | About 1.5 million ETH on Oct. 5 | 256 ETH per epoch, or 57,600 ETH per day |
| Total staked | About 43.7 million ETH, 35.78% of supply | Not stated in these sources | Not applicable |
These readings come from different outlets and dates, so they do not form one trend. The exit queue was lower on Oct. 5 than on Oct. 2 and higher again on Oct. 7. Treat each as a snapshot.
The $5.04 billion scenario, step by step
- Start with the entry backlog: 1,398,922 ETH (CryptoSlate, Oct. 7).
- Add the whole cohort Bitquery identified: 565,056 ETH (early Oct. 1). The total is 1,963,978 ETH.
- Multiply by $2,564.19 per ETH, the price used in CryptoSlate’s article. The result is about $5.04 billion.
- Divide by the entry rate of 57,600 ETH per day. The cohort alone is about 9.8 days of entry capacity if every ETH sought re-deposit. The backlog plus the cohort is about 34.1 days if nothing else changes.
On these inputs, a full return would add roughly 10 days to the entry wait, which is the traffic jam the headline describes. The jam is a delay, not a dollar loss. Each assumption behind the calculation moves the result:

- Full return. The scenario assumes the whole cohort comes back as new deposits. Lido expected its portion to return gradually, and not all of the ETH may re-enter.
- Overlap. The sources do not say how much of the cohort is already inside the 1,398,922 ETH backlog. Any overlap overstates the total.
- Fixed backlog. The entry backlog changes. CoinDesk’s Oct. 5 reading was about 1.5 million ETH.
- Price. The dollar figure scales with ETH’s price. Each $100 change in the price moves the total by about $196 million.
Lido, stETH and the 45-day estimate
Lido expected its last affected validators to stop staking by Oct. 7. That date marks the end of validator exits only. Withdrawals and any restaking take additional time. CoinDesk reported Lido’s estimate of up to about 45 days for the whole cycle. That is an upper estimate for the full process, not a guaranteed wait for every depositor.
For stETH holders, Lido said, as quoted by CoinDesk: “No action is required from stETH holders.”

What to do if you stake ETH through MetaMask
- Confirm how your ETH is held. Stake through MetaMask Staking and stETH are different positions with different exit paths. Check your account in the app before assuming which applies to you.
- Use MetaMask’s official notices for its status. The Oct. 1, 2026 update is the most recent company statement cited here.
- Plan around a queue, not a fixed date. Exit and entry waits move daily, and the figures above are snapshots.
- Never share your recovery phrase or withdrawal details. No source cited here suggests MetaMask asks for them, so treat unsolicited messages about “priority” exits or claims as suspect.
Questions to answer before you decide to exit
- Do you need the ETH within about two weeks? The early-October exit wait of about 14 days, plus the withdrawal step, may already exceed that window.
- Do you plan to re-stake? A new deposit joins the entry queue, where the Oct. 7 wait was about 24 days.
- Can you tolerate ETH’s price moving while you wait? Exiting does not remove price exposure, and the dollar value of any exited ETH moves with the market.
The Bottom Line
Treat the $1,000 as a small, measured diversion of block tips and the $5 billion as a conditional figure for how long a large re-entry could delay you. The questions still open are how the intrusion happened and whether MetaMask will confirm the cohort count, so watch its next update on both.
