CoinDesk reported that it was trading near $81,800 as U.S. stocks closed, with its 24-hour loss narrowing to about 2%. These are historical figures from the live coverage, which ended at 5:00 p.m. EDT—not current market prices.
How Bitcoin moved during Thursday’s session
Bitcoin had fallen more than 8% from a level near $87,000 four days earlier, according to CoinDesk’s October 8 coverage. During Thursday’s session it briefly slipped below $81,000, its lowest level since September 21, and was at risk of dropping below $80,000.
It then recovered ground late in the afternoon. CoinDesk’s closing update put Bitcoin near $81,800 as U.S. stocks closed and said the cryptocurrency’s 24-hour decline had narrowed to about 2%. The live page’s coverage ended at 5:00 p.m. EDT, so its figures describe that session and should not be read as live quotes.
What CoinDesk said traders were watching
The report described several concerns on traders’ radar, but did not establish any one of them as the definitive cause of Bitcoin’s decline. They included unease about the future of cryptography, rising oil prices and interest rates, technology-stock weakness linked to AI-related jitters, and attention to the approaching anniversary of the October 2025 flash crash.

Oil prices and the reported news sequence
In an earlier update, CoinDesk said WTI crude had risen above $93 a barrel and Brent above $105 after a tanker attack off Qatar. The report later noted President Trump’s comments that the U.S. would not attack Iran before the midterm elections, followed by a decline in oil prices. This is the live report’s October 8 chronology, not a current update on oil markets or geopolitics.
Treasury yields reversed from session highs
CoinDesk reported that the 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.36% before retreating to 5.22%, while the 30-year yield reached 5.73% before moving down to 5.60%. The report said the reason for the reversal was difficult to determine. It suggested that a decline in the Nasdaq could have sent money into bonds, but presented that as a possible explanation rather than a confirmed cause.

October 2025 flash-crash anniversary
The approaching anniversary was another concern mentioned in the coverage. CoinDesk described the October 10, 2025 flash crash as a fall in Bitcoin from about $122,000 to $105,000, with much of the move happening within minutes during thin Friday evening U.S. trading. That historical episode supplied context for traders’ attention; the report did not show that anniversary concerns caused Thursday’s decline.
Why Bitcoin recovered late
In its closing explanation, CoinDesk said cooler heads on the cryptography issue, a reversal lower in interest rates and a bounce in the technology sector helped Bitcoin narrow its loss. That is the report’s account of the late-session backdrop, not proof that those developments alone drove the price move.

Was Bitcoin’s cryptography under imminent threat?
The coverage discussed a viral warning that AI could put cryptocurrency cryptography at imminent risk, alongside a counterargument from Yehuda Lindell, Coinbase’s head of cryptography. Lindell told CoinDesk: “There is no evidence whatsoever pointing to a break of decades old hardness assumptions like elliptic curve cryptography.” The warning and response were competing claims in the report; the coverage itself does not establish an independent technical finding that cryptography was either imminently compromised or categorically risk-free.
What the reported on-chain and survey figures mean
CoinDesk cited Glassnode data estimating that about 6.4 million BTC were in a loss when Bitcoin briefly fell below $81,000. This was an estimate for that point in the October 8 session, not a current on-chain reading.

The same coverage summarized a State Street survey of 300 asset managers, asset owners and wealth managers. It reported that about 51% expected digital assets to become mainstream within five years, compared with 11% in 2024, and that institutions held an average of 11% of their portfolios in digital assets. These are figures as reported by CoinDesk from the survey, not independently verified here.

CoinDesk’s live report records the session’s price action and the concerns traders were watching: Bitcoin fell below $81,000, then recovered toward $81,800 by the close of U.S. stocks. It also describes easing in rates, a technology-sector bounce and cooler discussion of the cryptography warning as part of the late-session backdrop. The report does not establish a definitive cause for the selloff or recovery. All market prices, yields and oil levels above are specific to October 8, 2026, and the coverage ended at 5:00 p.m. EDT.
