What does the 30,000 figure mean?
It was UPS’s target for reducing operational positions during 2026, not a confirmed final tally of workers who lost their jobs. The Associated Press reported the plan in January 2026, saying UPS expected to use attrition and a voluntary separation offer for full-time drivers. UPS’s second-quarter filing later confirmed its Driver Choice Program and reported related separation costs, but did not say that the full 30,000-position target had been reached.
That distinction matters: a position reduction can occur through employees leaving without replacement, as well as through a voluntary departure program. The figure should not be read as 30,000 involuntary layoffs.
Why is UPS reducing jobs and Amazon volume?
UPS tied the workforce plan to a deliberate reduction in package volume from its largest customer and a broader redesign of its delivery network. In January 2025, the company announced an agreement to reduce Amazon package volume by more than 50% by the second half of 2026. UPS later reported that Amazon and its affiliates accounted for approximately 10.6% of consolidated revenue in 2025, substantially all in its U.S. Domestic Package business.

UPS says the volume change supports a strategy focused on revenue quality and profitable growth. Its Network Reconfiguration work includes facility consolidation, workforce changes, and end-to-end process redesign. Separately, its Network of the Future effort seeks greater efficiency through automation and operational sort consolidation in the U.S. domestic network. UPS reported approximately $3.5 billion in year-over-year savings from the related initiative in 2025 and expected approximately $3 billion in benefits in 2026; those are company-reported program figures, not a guarantee of future savings or a measure of net income.
Did UPS end its relationship with Amazon?
No complete end to the commercial relationship is established by the available company disclosures. UPS announced a reduction of more than 50% in Amazon volume from 2024 levels, and its second-quarter 2026 filing said the planned reduction was completed. UPS then said it completed the Amazon glide-down and related network reconfiguration initiatives in June 2026. Those statements describe a major reduction, not the termination of every UPS-Amazon business arrangement.

The Amazon reduction is significant because of the customer’s share of UPS revenue: approximately 10.6% in 2025, according to UPS’s Form 10-K. UPS has identified healthcare, small and medium-sized businesses, and international markets among its growth priorities. That strategic direction helps explain why the company describes the Amazon volume reduction as a choice about the shape and profitability of its network, rather than simply a labor-cost measure.
