Uniswap v4 Hooks Explained: What They Do and What to Check

Uniswap v4 hooks let developers attach custom logic to a pool’s lifecycle. Here’s how callbacks work, what hooks can enable, and what liquidity providers should verify.

Uniswap v4 hooks are optional smart contracts attached to a pool when it is created. They let a developer add custom behavior around selected pool operations, such as swaps or liquidity changes. That flexibility can enable features such as dynamic fees or limit-order-style designs, but a hook does not guarantee that a pool is safe, liquid, easy to find, or worth using.

What are Uniswap v4 hooks?

A hook is an external smart contract that a Uniswap v4 pool can identify in its pool key at initialization. The contract may run custom logic at selected points in the pool’s lifecycle. A hook is optional: a v4 pool can use the core pool behavior without one. One hook contract can also serve multiple pools. Once a hook is attached when a pool is created, it cannot be swapped onto that existing pool later. Uniswap’s hooks documentation describes the mechanism and its permissions.

In practical terms, a hook is not a setting that a trader or liquidity provider turns on for an existing pool. It is part of how a particular pool was configured. Hooks can make a pool behave differently, but they do not make every v4 pool customized or make customization automatically useful.

How do Uniswap v4 hooks work?

The pool’s key specifies its hook, and the PoolManager calls only the callbacks permitted by that hook’s configuration. A developer selects callback permissions, which are encoded in the low-order bits of the hook’s address. As a result, deployment must use an address whose flags match the permissions the hook declares. The callback pairs documented by Uniswap are:

Pool operation Available callback points
Initialization Before and after initialization
Liquidity addition Before and after adding liquidity
Liquidity removal Before and after removing liquidity
Swap Before and after a swap
Donation Before and after a donation

These callbacks give a hook code an opportunity to respond to selected events; they do not mean every hook runs at every point. The permissions determine which callbacks the PoolManager may call. Uniswap’s hook concepts guide explains how callbacks fit into v4’s broader design.

Hooks are one part of v4, not the whole architecture. The singleton PoolManager manages pools through one contract, while flash accounting tracks balances and settles net amounts. Those are distinct design elements, so it would be inaccurate to attribute every customization or any gas savings solely to hooks. The Uniswap v4 Core whitepaper describes the architecture and the ways developer-defined logic can alter pool behavior.

What can hooks make possible?

A hook can implement custom logic around the operations for which it has permission. Depending on its design, that logic may affect fees, pricing, order execution, or other pool behavior. Examples discussed in Uniswap’s documentation and whitepaper include:

  • Dynamic fees: a fee strategy that responds to conditions such as volatility rather than remaining fixed.
  • Limit-order-style behavior: logic that can resemble an onchain limit order.
  • Time-weighted execution: mechanisms designed to execute a large order over time instead of all at once.
  • Custom oracle behavior: a pool-specific approach to providing or using price information.
  • Custom accounting or pricing: logic that changes how a pool handles swaps or accounts for outcomes.
  • Automated liquidity management: designs that manage liquidity according to programmed rules.

These are possibilities in the design space, not features automatically present in every hook-enabled pool. Nor does a feature name establish how it behaves in a particular deployment, how well it works, or what risks it introduces. The whitepaper describes custom return deltas as one mechanism that can change swap behavior; developers and users need to assess the actual contract and pool configuration.

What should you check before adding liquidity to a v4 pool with a hook?

Adding liquidity means exposing assets to the behavior of that specific pool, including any custom logic in its hook. A familiar token pair or a feature label is not enough to establish the pool’s risks or economics. Before committing funds, check the exact pool and hook on the relevant chain:

  • Behavior: identify which callbacks the hook uses and what the contract does at those points. Understand how its logic can affect swaps, fees, and liquidity operations.
  • Control: check who can administer or change the hook’s behavior, if anyone. Those controls are specific to the contract; do not assume them from the fact that it is a v4 hook.
  • Security evidence: look for the contract’s verified code, relevant audits, tests, known limitations, and any applicable bug-bounty scope. A reference to a security framework or bug-bounty program does not prove that a particular hook has been reviewed or is safe.
  • Pool economics: assess the token pair, fee behavior, liquidity, and trading activity for the pool itself. A hook’s name does not establish these values, and market conditions can change.
  • Compatibility and access: confirm that the interface or application you plan to use supports the particular pool and its hook. Hook support does not guarantee routing, display, or access through every interface.

Uniswap Support warns that third-party hooks may be malicious or cause unintended consequences in its guide to adding liquidity to Uniswap v4 with a hook. Treat the contract as executable code with consequences for pool operations, not as a safety endorsement from the protocol. For security-framework and bug-bounty references, see the Uniswap v4 protocol overview; those references do not certify any individual deployment.

How can a developer get started building a hook?

Uniswap’s official starting path is a Foundry workflow using the v4 template. Its first-hook tutorial builds and tests a points hook. The exact environment setup and steps are maintained in the official Hooks Overview, so follow that guide for the current instructions rather than relying on a copied command sequence.

  1. Prepare the local environment: follow the guide’s setup for Foundry and the v4 template.
  2. Study the tutorial: use the first-hook points example to understand the contract structure and how to test the intended behavior.
  3. Choose permissions deliberately: decide which lifecycle callbacks the hook needs; permissions determine which callbacks the PoolManager may invoke.
  4. Match the deployment address: the hook’s low-order address bits must correspond to its declared permissions. The documented workflow commonly uses a mined CREATE2 salt to find a matching deployment address.
  5. Test deployment and behavior: the guide describes using Foundry’s deployment cheatcode to place a hook at a chosen address in a local test context. Test the permitted callbacks and relevant edge cases before considering a real deployment.

The official Uniswap v4 hooks public repository includes examples described as a dynamic-fee StablePairHook for same-price asset pairs, a WETHHook for ETH/WETH wrapping through a v4 pool, a WstETHHook for stETH/wstETH conversion, and a WstETHRoutingHook that supports quote simulation for the related wrapping behavior. These examples can help developers study implementation patterns; their existence is not a recommendation to use them or evidence that an individual deployment is suitable for a particular user.

What hooks do not guarantee

A hook makes custom pool behavior possible; it does not by itself establish that the behavior is beneficial, that the code is secure, that liquidity will be available, or that an interface will route trades to the pool. The protocol design reference is the 2024 v4 Core whitepaper, while deployment details and individual contracts can change. Check the exact chain, contract, pool configuration, and current security evidence before interacting with a named deployment. For a general explanation of v4, see Uniswap Support’s overview of Uniswap v4.
