Ubisoft ended new XDefiant downloads, registrations and purchases on December 3, 2024, and announced that its servers would shut down on June 3, 2025. That date has passed. Ubisoft also announced the closure of its San Francisco and Osaka production studios and a ramp-down of its Sydney production site. The company said XDefiant had not retained enough players to justify further significant investment.

Why did Ubisoft discontinue XDefiant?

Ubisoft said the free-to-play shooter had drawn an encouraging start and a committed fan base, but had not attracted and retained enough players over time to compete at the level the company wanted in a crowded market. It said the game’s results were too far below what was needed to support further significant investment. That is Ubisoft’s stated rationale, not an independently established diagnosis. Ubisoft’s December 3, 2024 announcement also noted the challenge of building a free-to-play game over the long term. In his community message, executive producer Mark Rubin wrote that “Many free-to-play games take a long time to find their footing and become profitable.” Rubin’s notice said more than 15 million players had played XDefiant, a cumulative figure reported by Ubisoft rather than an independently audited count.

When did XDefiant stop working?

Ubisoft’s announced timeline separated the end of new access and purchases from the planned server shutdown:

Milestone What Ubisoft announced
December 3, 2024 New downloads, player registrations and purchases stopped.
Season 3 Ubisoft said the season was still due to launch.
June 3, 2025 Announced date for the servers to shut down; this date has passed.

The available notices establish what Ubisoft announced, but do not independently verify the precise moment of the final server disconnection. If you are checking whether the game is playable now, the announced service end date has passed and Ubisoft discontinued the game; the cited notices do not establish a later return to service. Ubisoft’s community notice contains the original timeline.

What happened to Ubisoft’s studios and staff?

The company distinguished between two studio closures and one site ramp-down. Its December 2024 announcement said it would close the San Francisco and Osaka production studios and ramp down the Sydney production site. It said almost half of the global XDefiant team would transition to other Ubisoft roles. Ubisoft also reported 143 departures in San Francisco and said 134 people in Osaka and Sydney were likely to depart. Those were announced and projected impacts, not final verified departure totals. Ubisoft’s announcement provides those figures.

The San Francisco production-studio closure should not be confused with the company’s San Francisco business office. The San Francisco Chronicle’s December 3, 2024 report said a Ubisoft spokesperson indicated that the business office would remain open.

Were XDefiant players promised refunds?

Yes. Mark Rubin’s community notice said purchasers of the Ultimate Founder’s Pack would receive a full refund, as would anyone who had made a purchase in the 30 days before the announcement. Ubisoft said eligible refunds should be processed automatically within eight weeks. This describes the announced policy; the notice does not confirm that every eligible player ultimately received payment. The community notice states the terms.

How did Ubisoft later describe the shutdown?

In a January 9, 2025 strategic update, Ubisoft grouped XDefiant’s discontinuation and the closure of three production studios in high-cost geographies within broader strategic reviews, selective investment and cost-reduction measures. The company also revised its Q3 FY2024–25 net-bookings outlook, citing both lower-than-expected holiday sales—mainly for Star Wars Outlaws—and XDefiant’s discontinuation. The revised outlook was not attributed to XDefiant alone, and it was a dated forecast rather than a current or final result. Ubisoft’s January 2025 strategic update reported expected net bookings of around €300 million for that quarter. CEO Yves Guillemot said the company was confident its strategic and execution reviews would position Ubisoft for a stronger future.
