The steepest decline among the listed tractor classes was in four-wheel-drive (4WD) tractors, down 41.5%. These are historical April 2025 figures, published May 19, 2025—not a measure of the 2026 market.
How many tractors and combines were sold?
The April totals and year-to-date figures show a sharper drop for combines than for tractors. Year to date means the comparable reporting period in 2025 versus the same period in 2024; the source does not specify a more precise start date in the accessible report.

Which tractor classes had the largest declines?
Every listed U.S. tractor class sold fewer units in April 2025 than in April 2024. 4WD tractors had the steepest percentage decline, while under-40-horsepower 2WD tractors remained the largest class by unit sales in the reported breakdown.

These percentages compare reported unit sales in each class, not prices, dollar revenue, or the number of machines in service.
How did Canadian tractor sales compare?
In contrast with the U.S. decline, Canadian agricultural tractor sales grew 3.4% year over year in April 2025, according to the same AEM figures as reported by Successful Farming. That reported comparison concerns agricultural tractors; it should not be read as a comparison of all equipment categories or as a broader measure of the Canadian farm economy.

What did the inventory figures mean?
The report separately gave farm tractor and self-propelled combine inventory counts at the start of April 2025. Total farm tractor inventory was 118,033 and combine inventory was 1,153. The tractor inventory breakdown was 75,928 under-40-hp 2WD units, 31,650 40–100-hp 2WD units, 9,684 over-100-hp 2WD units, and 771 4WD units. These are inventory figures, not additional sales; they should not be added to April sales totals.
What explanation did AEM give for the slowdown?
AEM senior vice president Curt Blades described the weak April sales as reflective of softness in the ag economy. He pointed to increased input prices, high interest rates, and global trade concerns as factors leading farmers to take a more cautious approach to capital investment. Blades also said that, with planting season underway, AEM remained optimistic that the ag economy would improve and equipment demand strengthen.

Those comments are Blades’s interpretation and outlook at the time of the April 2025 report, not proof that any one factor caused the declines or a current forecast. The figures establish the direction and size of reported sales changes; they do not by themselves explain why purchases changed.

- Tractor unit sales were lower year over year both for April and for the comparable year-to-date period.
- Combine sales fell more sharply than tractor sales, particularly in the year-to-date comparison.
- The decline was not uniform across tractor classes: 4WD and over-100-hp 2WD tractors fell more steeply than the two smaller 2WD classes.
- The reported Canadian agricultural tractor result moved in the opposite direction from the U.S. result.
