What is the allegation?
In August 2024, Kenyan technology publication Techweez reported that Transsion was reportedly under scrutiny in Kenya for alleged tax evasion. It described Transsion as the parent of Tecno, Infinix, and itel. The report repeated a KSh 400 billion figure attributed to other reporting and unnamed sources. Techweez’s August 2024 report is secondary coverage; the underlying records and original publisher for the figure were not available in the located material.

That distinction matters: an allegation, an investigation, a formal tax assessment, and a court-established liability are different things. What does “tax evasion” mean in this context?
As general Kenyan tax context, KRA’s iWhistle guidance describes tax evasion as failure to pay taxes and lists income tax, pay-as-you-earn (PAYE), value-added tax (VAT), excise duty, and import duty among relevant tax types. KRA’s iWhistle guidance does not identify which taxes, if any, were at issue in a formal assessment involving Transsion. The available reporting does not establish the specific tax types or periods alleged.

What is the case’s current status?

KRA has separately described a broader data-validation initiative: beginning 1 January 2026, it said it would validate income and expenses declared in 2025 income-year returns against e-invoicing, withholding-tax, and customs-import data. KRA’s notice on validation of 2025 income-tax returns provides general enforcement context only; it does not confirm or corroborate the allegations involving Transsion.

Do not confuse this with a separate 2026 DCI report
In February 2026, Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported the arrest of a Kenyan phone trader in a money-laundering investigation linked to an alleged gold scam. That is a separate alleged matter. The DCI report does not say that Transsion or Tecno was accused of tax evasion in the gold-scam investigation, and it is not evidence confirming the tax allegations or the KSh 400 billion figure.
What would confirm or resolve the tax story?
A substantive update would need to establish the procedural status and identify the evidence behind any amount. The most useful points to verify are:
- Whether KRA confirms an investigation or the reported May 2024 raid.
- Which Kenyan entity is involved, and which tax types and periods are at issue.
- Whether KSh 400 billion is a reported allegation, a formal assessment, a disputed amount, or a liability determined through legal proceedings.
- Whether any charge, settlement, tribunal decision, or court judgment has followed.
- Whether Transsion or the relevant Kenyan operating entity has responded to the specific claims.
Until such documentation or attributable statements are available, the careful description is that secondary reports alleged tax evasion and reported scrutiny—not that tax evasion has been proved.
