The ranking is an industry estimate—not audited brand-level financial reporting—and the available published material provides the full top 20 plus several additional top-50 entries.
What the ranking measures
Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult estimated brand sales, retail-market value and market share for Swiss watches in calendar 2023. Swiss watchmakers rarely publish complete brand-level accounts, so every turnover, market-share and unit figure below should be read as an estimate rather than a company disclosure.

The industry backdrop was unusually strong: Swiss watch exports reached a record CHF 26.7 billion across 16.9 million watches. The top 50 brands were estimated to generate about CHF 36 billion in sales, against an estimated total retail market of roughly CHF 50 billion (Monochrome Watches, 29 February 2024).
The published top 20
Tatler Asia reproduced the following first 20 positions from the Morgan Stanley/LuxeConsult work. A rank is not a like-for-like measure of unit volume: a haute-horlogerie maker can sell far fewer watches than an entry-price brand while producing more revenue.

The source coverage does not publish all 50 rows in text, so it would be misleading to invent positions 21 through 50. It does identify these further entrants:

| 37 | F.P. Journe | CHF 98 million |
| 38 | H. Moser & Cie. | CHF 93 million |

Those three independent brands entered the top 50 for the first time in this ranking series, according to Revolution Watch. The figures are estimated brand sales, not audited statements.

Rolex’s scale and the industry’s concentration
Rolex crossed an estimated CHF 10 billion
Rolex was estimated at CHF 10.1 billion in 2023 sales and a 30.3% retail market share. That made it the first Swiss watch brand estimated to pass CHF 10 billion. The report’s quoted assessment was that “no other luxury brand can claim such a dominant position in its respective sector.”

The privately owned “Big Four”—Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Richard Mille—held an estimated combined 43.9% of the market. A different grouping highlights sales concentration: Rolex, Cartier, Omega and Patek Philippe together represented an estimated 50.2% of Swiss watch sales. Thirteen brands accounted for 75%, and 25 brands for 90%.

Vacheron joined the billion-franc tier
Vacheron Constantin became the eighth brand estimated above CHF 1 billion, at approximately CHF 1.097 billion, up an estimated 18% year over year.
Why Swatch moved up the ranking
Swatch brand sales were estimated at CHF 660 million, an increase of 63% from 2022. Revolution Watch attributed the momentum primarily to the Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch collaboration: more than two million units were estimated to have sold. The figure refers to the Swatch brand and the collaboration’s estimated units, not to Omega’s own turnover.
Rank #4
- Case Size: 40.00 mm, Band Width: 20 mm, Case Thickness: 10.23 mm
- Automatic movement, leather strap, Index dial type, Date
- Water-resistant up to a pressure of 5 bar (50 m / 165 ft): suitable for short periods of recreational swimming and showering, but no diving or snorkeling.
The result illustrates how a relatively accessible product can add substantial volume and attention even as the industry’s largest share of value sits in much higher price brackets. Availability varied by market, and buyers should verify authenticity and seller reputation when purchasing a MoonSwatch through a marketplace.

Tissot reached estimated sales of CHF 825 million. Coverage from Revolution Watch linked the recovery to the PRX line, which gave the Swatch Group brand a strong design-led offer in the mid-market. Unlike the MoonSwatch story, this is a sales estimate for the Tissot brand rather than a published PRX unit count.

Premiumization explains the gap between units and value
Price mix was central to the 2023 result. Watches priced above CHF 25,000 generated an estimated 69% of industry growth and 44% of Swiss export value, while representing only 2.5% of unit volume. In the entry and mid-level volume segments, Swatch Group held an estimated 72% share.
This polarization explains why a brand’s rank cannot be interpreted as a popularity league table. High-priced watches contribute disproportionately to revenue; lower-priced watches contribute disproportionately to units. Ownership also matters: privately held luxury specialists can have a very different product and distribution strategy from brands managed inside a large group.
What the ranking says about demand
The Morgan Stanley/LuxeConsult report described desirability as “near an all time high,” citing further lengthening waiting lists (quoted by Monochrome Watches). That observation fits the concentration data: demand for scarce, high-price models supported the leading luxury brands, while collaborations and accessible mechanical designs helped drive volume lower down the price ladder.

Independent watchmaking gained visibility, but remained small in aggregate. Revolution Watch estimated that roughly 40 independent brands together generated less than 2% of industry turnover, even though F.P. Journe, H. Moser & Cie. and Greubel Forsey reached the top 50 individually.
How to use these numbers responsibly
- Use “estimated” with every figure. The ranking is an analytical estimate, not audited financial reporting.
- Keep retail share separate from exports. A retail-market percentage and a Swiss-export value measure different parts of the market.
- Do not compare units and turnover as if they were equivalent. The price-band split shows why a small number of expensive watches can outweigh millions of lower-priced units.
- Treat the top-50 list as incomplete in text form. The published material available here confirms the top 20 and selected later entries, not every row from 21 to 50.
- Keep the year fixed. These are 2023 estimates reported in 2024 coverage; later industry reports would describe a different period.
Bottom line
Rolex’s estimated CHF 10.1 billion and 30.3% retail share made it the clear 2023 leader, but the broader lesson is structural: a handful of luxury brands captured most of the industry’s value, while Swatch Group controlled much of the accessible-volume market. Swatch’s MoonSwatch surge and Tissot’s PRX recovery show that growth was possible below the top luxury tier, yet the economics of Swiss watches remained decisively premiumized.
