The available evidence supports a story of strong early backing followed by commercial difficulty—not a verified total for OUYA hardware sales.
What OUYA promised—and what its funding proved
OUYA pitched an inexpensive Android console for television gaming, with games free to try and an open route for developers to publish. Its May 2013 company announcement described a Tegra 3-powered system targeting 1080p. The idea was to make living-room gaming more accessible to independent creators and players.
The launch drew substantial financial backing. OUYA said it raised $8,596,474 on Kickstarter against a $950,000 goal, and announced a $15 million investment round in May 2013. These figures measure crowdfunding and investment, not consumer purchases of consoles. Founder and CEO Julie Uhrman said in that announcement, “We want OUYA to be here for a long time to come”—a statement of intent, not proof of the company’s eventual financial health. Did OUYA sell consoles?
The sources available here do not establish an audited total for OUYA console sales. Contemporary reporting described slow retail sales and difficulty achieving broad adoption, so it is fair to say the company struggled to turn early enthusiasm into sustained market traction. It is not accurate to turn that assessment into a precise unit-sales claim.

Funding, developer registrations, and sales are different measures. TechCrunch reported that OUYA had about 36,000 registered developers around mid-2014, citing the company’s prior-year figure. Registrations do not establish how many developers were active or how many games they shipped. Developer accounts from a July 2013 survey varied. Rami Ismail of Vlambeer praised the platform’s accessibility. Eric Froemling saw a fit for local multiplayer and joined as a launch title. Ryan Wiemeyer of The Men Who Wear Many Hats said his studio likely would not have ported its game without a friend willing to handle the work. One game’s sales illustrate the limits of the evidence
SassyBot Studio reported 1,739 unique downloads and 24 sales for its game Small Bang Theory on OUYA between July 4 and November 13, 2013. The studio discussed limited marketing and the platform’s playable-demo model as possible context. Why OUYA sought a buyer
In April 2015, Ars Technica reported that OUYA was seeking an investor buyout as debts climbed. By June, TechCrunch reported that Razer was in the process of acquiring OUYA, while saying it could not confirm the terms. Its account pointed to competition in the Android set-top market, difficulty achieving broad adoption, and venture debt as pressures. That company-level sale process is separate from later disputes involving developers. In July 2015, Ars Technica relayed allegations made by developers speaking anonymously to Vice that OUYA had not honored some payment commitments under its Free the Games Fund after the Razer acquisition. The fund had offered matching money to games that raised at least $50,000 through crowdfunding in exchange for six months of exclusivity; the report said terms were later revised to use staged payments. A 2024 Plarium retrospective says the OUYA console and controller were discontinued after the company and assets were sold to Razer, and that support ended in June 2019. If you are considering a used OUYA as collectible hardware or for historical interest, assess the individual listing rather than assuming it is a working modern gaming system. Check the console’s condition, whether the controller and required cables are included, the seller’s return terms, and whether the specific features you want have been shown to work on that unit. Current functionality and service access are not established by the retrospective.
