The Story Behind PakWheels: From Car Enthusiast Forum to Automotive Marketplace

Founded as a car enthusiast community in 2003, PakWheels added classifieds, paid listings and automotive services. Here’s how it grew—and why its $1 billion figure was an ambition, not a disclosed valuation.

PakWheels began in 2003 as an online community for car enthusiasts and became a classifieds portal in 2005. Its later evolution combined vehicle listings with paid advertising, dealer offerings, inspections and other automotive services. The company identifies Hanif Bhatti as its founder; Raza Saeed and Suneel Sarfaraz entered the story as later acquirers in 2008.

How PakWheels started

PakWheels traces its beginnings to 2003, when founder Hanif Bhatti started the portal from his basement, according to the company’s About Us page. A 2017 retrospective in Profit describes the first iteration as a forum and enthusiast community. Members could share information and discuss cars before the site became a formal marketplace.

In 2005, PakWheels officially launched its automobile classifieds portal. The forum continued alongside the listings, connecting the community side of the business with the practical task of finding vehicles to buy or sell. That shift—from helping people discover and discuss cars to helping them transact—is central to the company’s development.

Who founded and later acquired PakWheels?

PakWheels names Hanif Bhatti as its founder. He should not be conflated with the entrepreneurs who took over the venture later: a case study from the Lahore School of Economics says Raza Saeed and Suneel Sarfaraz acquired PakWheels in 2008. Profit’s 2017 account describes Suneel Munj—also referred to as Suneel Sarfaraz Munj—as the company’s CEO at that time.

The roles mark different stages: Bhatti founded the community, while Saeed and Munj were later acquirers associated with its development as a business. In a 2021 interview recounted by LUMS, Munj explained the original commercial problem this way: “The basic aim was to address the pain points that come with buying and selling cars.”

How PakWheels developed its business model

From participation to paid visibility

A community can attract people who want information, but operating a marketplace also requires ways to earn revenue. In a 2025 interview published by the PakWheels Blog, Munj recalled that featured car ads were introduced about five years after the community began, at Rs. 500 per month. That is a historical price, not a current rate. The model paired open community participation with paid extra visibility for sellers.

Listings, advertising and dealer offers

Over time, the platform’s commercial activity broadened beyond featured listings. The Lahore School of Economics case study describes advertising from fast-moving consumer-goods companies and automakers, dealer offers and paid featured listings as revenue sources. A historical TechJuice account also discusses experiments such as loyalty cards, traditional advertising, dealership packages and auto shows. These accounts describe business activity in particular periods; they do not establish the company’s current revenue mix or the share contributed by any one stream.

Services intended to address trust and information gaps

Classifieds can connect buyers and sellers, but a listing alone cannot tell a buyer whether a used car is in good condition. PakWheels added services and content around that problem. Profit reported in 2017 that the company had launched CarSure inspections to help buyers make informed decisions. LUMS describes CarSure’s digitized reports and video reviews, as well as historical auto shows.

The 2025 company interview presents a broader ecosystem that includes inspections, parts, reviews, YouTube content and engine oils. This shows the range of areas associated with the platform, not that each one is a major or separately profitable business line. The company’s stated mission is “Transforming automobile buying, selling, and maintenance experience in Pakistan.”

How much funding did PakWheels raise?

Frontier Digital Ventures invested USD 3.5 million in Pak eVentures in 2014, according to Profit, which identifies Pak eVentures as PakWheels’ holding company. PakWheels’ About Us page also reports a first funding round of USD 3.5 million, without dating it on that page. The 2014 investment is therefore the clearest dated funding figure in the cited accounts.

That investment amount is not the same thing as a company valuation. Profit reported that the valuation was not disclosed. The available accounts here do not establish PakWheels’ current valuation, revenue, profitability or precise revenue breakdown.

Was PakWheels valued at $1 billion?

No cited evidence establishes a $1 billion valuation. The figure came from a 2017 ambition voiced by Munj, not a reported sale, funding valuation or appraisal. Profit quoted him saying: “My aim is to make PakWheels a billion dollar company when valued, and the largest platform in Pakistan for anything and everything to do with automobiles,” and noted that he did not disclose the company’s valuation. The headline’s billion-dollar language refers to that goal, not a confirmed valuation.

What scale does PakWheels report?

PakWheels’ undated About Us page reports more than 25 million annual visitors, over 250 million page views and more than 400,000 vehicles bought and sold “in last year alone.” The page does not state which year those figures cover or describe them as audited results, so they should be read as company-reported measures rather than current-year verified totals. Separately, Munj said in the company’s 2025 interview that PakWheels had over 480 employees nationwide; that, too, is an interview claim rather than an independently verified current headcount.
