Buying a phone from Costco can be a good deal, but Costco is usually most valuable as a sales channel—not automatically as the cheapest place to buy the device. The biggest savings often come from Costco Shop Cards, waived activation fees, or carrier promotions. Those rewards may depend on a trade-in, a particular plan, and keeping service for 24 or 36 months.
Costco is worth considering if you already shop there, want a specific Costco promotion, and are comfortable with the carrier’s terms. An unlocked phone from Apple, Samsung, or another retailer is usually better if you value flexibility, broad model selection, and simple ownership.

What “buying a phone from Costco” can mean
There are three materially different transactions:
- An unlocked retail phone: You pay Costco for the device and can generally choose a compatible carrier. Confirm that the exact model is unlocked and supports your carrier’s bands, eSIM, 5G, and international roaming. Costco’s phone category includes selected unlocked devices, carrier phones, and accessories.
- A carrier activation or upgrade: You obtain the phone through a participating carrier, while Costco may provide a Shop Card or another incentive. The carrier controls the installment agreement, service plan, bill credits, trade-in assessment, unlocking rules, and much of the return process.
- A BYOD or prepaid purchase: You buy a phone without entering a traditional postpaid promotion. These options can be simpler, but they may not qualify for the AT&T or T-Mobile Costco incentives advertised for new lines, upgrades, or trade-ins.
Before comparing prices, identify which transaction you are considering. A $0 phone obtained through carrier credits is not economically equivalent to an unlocked phone purchased outright.

Pros of buying a new phone from Costco
1. Costco-specific Shop Card rewards
Costco’s AT&T and T-Mobile pages have advertised combinations of carrier bill credits, digital Costco Shop Cards, prepaid-card incentives, activation offers, and trade-in promotions. These rewards can make Costco cheaper than buying through the carrier directly—but only when you qualify for the entire offer.

A Shop Card is most valuable to someone who already buys groceries, household goods, fuel, or other products from Costco. Someone who rarely shops there should value it below its face amount because it is store credit, not cash. Costco says Shop Cards can be used at Costco warehouses and Costco.com, but not at a carrier kiosk inside a Costco warehouse.
2. Possible activation-fee savings
Costco’s AT&T offer page has advertised waived activation fees alongside selected promotions. This is a promotion-specific benefit, not a permanent Costco policy. Check the exact offer before submitting an order, because activation charges and eligibility can vary by carrier, account type, device, and activation method.
3. A potentially longer Costco return window
Costco’s general return policy lists cellular phones among electronics subject to a 90-day return period. That can be more generous than a standard carrier return window. However, Costco explicitly warns that cellular-phone returns are also affected by carrier service-contract details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn practice, returning the physical phone may be only one part of the process. You may also need to reverse an installment agreement, cancel or correct a line activation, resolve a trade-in, and confirm that promotional credits have been removed correctly. Do not assume that returning the handset automatically cancels the carrier contract.
For eligible warehouse purchases, Costco generally allows members to bring products to a warehouse for return, although limitations apply. Wireless-account problems—such as missing bill credits, porting failures, and unlocking—usually still require the carrier.
4. Convenient warehouse support
For members who prefer in-person service, Costco can be more convenient than mailing a device to a manufacturer or navigating a carrier’s online support system. Keep in mind that the warehouse may be able to process a product return but may not be able to fix a carrier billing or account problem.

5. Occasional bundled protection benefits
Some Costco product listings have included AppleCare+ or another protection benefit. For example, a Costco comparison listing showed an unlocked iPhone bundle with AppleCare+ included. That does not mean every Costco iPhone includes it. Check the exact product page for the protection plan’s duration, accidental-damage coverage, deductibles, claim limits, and enrollment requirements.
6. One-stop shopping
Costco sells phones alongside cases, chargers, power banks, mounts, AirTags, headsets, and other accessories. This is convenient, although convenience alone does not prove that Costco has the lowest accessory price.
Cons of buying a new phone from Costco
1. The advertised discount may take years to receive
Many carrier promotions are not instant discounts. They use monthly bill credits tied to an installment agreement. Costco’s AT&T materials have described offers using 36-month installments, while its T-Mobile materials have described some offers using 24 monthly credits.
A promotion can therefore look like a free or heavily discounted phone while requiring you to remain with the carrier for two or three years. If you cancel early, future credits may stop and you may still owe the remaining device balance.
2. Required plans can erase the phone savings
Eligibility may require a specific postpaid plan, a new line or qualifying upgrade, an eligible port-in, autopay or paperless billing, a qualifying trade-in, and continued good standing. A premium plan or additional family line may cost more than the phone incentive saves.
Calculate the total cost of the required service, not merely the advertised device credit. For a family account, also check whether adding or cancelling one line affects existing discounts or credits on other lines.

3. Shop Cards are delayed and restricted
Costco’s AT&T information has said that eligible wireless Virtual Shop Cards may be delivered digitally by SMS within 60 days after purchase or activation. The T-Mobile Costco page has listed fulfillment periods of up to 16 weeks for some rewards. The exact deadline depends on the offer.
That delay matters if you need the savings immediately. Save the order confirmation, activation details, promotion terms, and the phone number associated with the account. If the card does not arrive, check whether the offer required registration, a qualifying port-in, or continued service through fulfillment.
4. Trade-ins create another failure point
A trade-in may be rejected or downgraded because of activation lock, an incorrect model, damage, water exposure, an IMEI mismatch, missing components, or late shipment. Before sending a trade-in:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Photograph the phone from every side.
- Record the serial number and IMEI.
- Document the device’s condition and working status.
- Disable activation locks and erase your data.
- Keep the shipping receipt and tracking number.
Do not assume the advertised trade-in value is final until the carrier confirms acceptance.
5. Selection may be narrower
Costco does not necessarily stock every storage tier, color, regional model, carrier version, or accessory bundle. Compare the exact manufacturer model number, storage capacity, SIM and eSIM configuration, new-versus-refurbished status, included accessories, and warranty coverage.
6. Carrier activation can be complicated
Common problems include failed number ports, incorrect plans, delayed bill credits, Shop Cards linked to the wrong number, rejected trade-ins, and phones that are not unlocked when expected. AT&T’s Costco information says credits can take multiple billing cycles to begin and may later include catch-up credits.

Check your first several bills and avoid changing plans until you understand whether doing so will end the promotion.
7. Costco does not provide a blanket two-year phone warranty
Costco’s automatic second-year warranty extension applies to specified product categories, such as certain televisions, computers, and major appliances. It does not establish blanket second-year coverage for cellular phones. Verify the manufacturer’s limited warranty and any AppleCare+, Samsung Care+, or carrier protection plan separately.
8. The membership cost changes the calculation
If you would join Costco solely to buy one phone, include the membership cost in your calculation. A Shop Card or discount does not automatically outweigh that expense. Joining makes more financial sense when you expect to use the membership for other purchases or when verified net savings exceed the membership cost by a comfortable margin.
Costco versus other places to buy a phone
| Your priority | Where to check first |
|---|---|
| Maximum model, color, and storage choice | Apple, Samsung, or another manufacturer |
| Unlocked flexibility | Manufacturer or major retailer |
| Carrier bill credits | Both the carrier and Costco |
| Costco Shop Card | Costco |
| Included AppleCare+ or protection | The exact Costco product listing |
| Simplest activation and billing support | Carrier-direct |
| Warehouse-based return option | Costco, subject to the carrier contract |
| Lowest total cost | A like-for-like comparison of all terms |
Manufacturer-direct purchases generally offer broader configuration choices and direct trade-in support. Carrier-direct offers may be better for account-specific upgrades or trade-in deals. Costco can win when its Shop Card or waived activation fee is genuinely additional to the carrier’s offer.

Use this formula for an unlocked purchase:
True Costco cost = phone price + sales tax + attributable membership cost + shipping
- immediate discounts - realistic Shop Card value - trade-in value
For a carrier promotion, add the cost of any required plan or additional line and count only the credits you realistically expect to receive.

For example, suppose a hypothetical Costco promotion offers a $900 phone, $800 in credits over 36 months, and a $100 Shop Card, but requires a premium plan costing $25 more per month than your alternative. The nominal rewards total $900, but the plan difference alone costs $900 over 36 months. The phone is not effectively free unless the required service is already one you would choose.

Checklist before you buy
- Confirm the exact model number, storage, color, and unlocked or carrier status.
- Check whether the device is new, refurbished, or part of a Costco-only bundle.
- Confirm carrier compatibility, eSIM support, 5G bands, and international-roaming needs.
- Identify whether the offer is for a new line, upgrade, port-in, BYOD, or prepaid purchase.
- Read the required plan, autopay, installment, trade-in, and minimum-service terms.
- Record the credit period—24 or 36 months in some advertised offers.
- Check the return deadline, restocking fee, and whether Costco’s or the carrier’s terms control.
- Confirm how and when the Shop Card or prepaid reward will arrive.
- Verify the manufacturer warranty and any included protection plan.
- Include membership, tax, shipping, and the cost of any required plan in the comparison.
- Save screenshots or a printed copy of the promotion before checkout.
What to do after purchase
- Photograph the new phone, its packaging, serial number, and IMEI.
- Confirm that activation and number porting completed correctly.
- Keep the receipt, carrier agreement, trade-in instructions, and promotion terms.
- Photograph and track any trade-in shipment.
- Review the first three carrier bills for the installment agreement and expected credits.
- Confirm trade-in acceptance before assuming the full promotion is secured.
- Track the Shop Card fulfillment deadline and the phone number or email used for delivery.
- Do not change the plan or cancel service until you understand the effect on remaining credits.
If something goes wrong
Bill credits are missing
First confirm that the line is active, the required plan is still in place, the installment agreement appears on the account, and the trade-in was accepted. Credits may not appear on the first bill. Contact the carrier before changing the account, and keep Costco’s order number and promotional confirmation available. Escalate to Costco if the missing reward is the Costco-specific Shop Card rather than a carrier credit.
The Shop Card never arrives
Check whether it is digital or physical, the stated fulfillment deadline, the phone number used for activation, and whether a registration step was required. Contact the carrier and Costco after the applicable deadline, providing your activation and order records.
You need to return an activated phone
Handle both sides of the transaction: return the device through the applicable Costco channel and obtain confirmation about the carrier line, installment balance, trade-in, and promotional credits. Get the resolution in writing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →An Apple device cannot be returned
Costco requires Apple devices to be factory-reset and unlocked before return. Disable Find My, sign out of your Apple Account, remove Activation Lock, erase all content and settings, remove the SIM if applicable, and confirm that the phone reaches the setup screen. Follow Apple’s current support instructions because menu labels can change with iOS updates.
Who should buy a phone through Costco?
Costco is likely a good choice if you already have a membership, regularly use Costco credit, want the exact device and promotion, qualify for the trade-in, and will keep the required carrier plan for the entire credit period.
Buy unlocked elsewhere if you may change carriers, want immediate ownership, need a particular configuration, dislike installment obligations, or would not use a Shop Card. Compare Apple’s iPhone store and Samsung’s Galaxy store with Costco’s exact SKU.
Buy directly from a carrier if your account-specific upgrade or trade-in offer is better, or you want one company responsible for activation, billing, trade-in tracking, and support. Check AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon directly.

Costco can be an excellent place to buy a new phone when its Shop Card, waived fee, or protection bundle provides real additional value. It is not automatically the cheapest option, and “free phone” promotions commonly mean years of bill credits tied to a qualifying plan and trade-in.
Compare the exact phone, total service cost, membership expense, reward timing, return terms, warranty, and early-cancellation exposure. If the numbers still work and you are committed to the carrier, Costco may be worthwhile. If flexibility matters more, buy an unlocked phone directly from the manufacturer or a major retailer.
