Re:

The EV Pullback Is Emblematic of a Bigger Problem: Value

New and used EV markets can move in different directions. For buyers, value depends on more than price: charging access, depreciation, resale uncertainty and whether the car fits everyday needs all matter.

EV demand is not the same thing as EV value. A buyer has to weigh the purchase price against charging access, day-to-day usefulness, future resale uncertainty and the alternatives—not just decide whether electric cars are gaining or losing momentum. Recent market reports show a split between new and used EV activity, while industry commentary points to affordability and resale concerns. None of that proves that an EV is the wrong choice for every household.

What the EV pullback says—and what it does not

“Pullback” can describe automakers changing investment plans, shoppers hesitating, or sales moving in a particular part of the market. Those are related, but they are not interchangeable. The available figures do not establish one uniform retreat across every EV, buyer or market segment. They point instead to a value question: what does a buyer get for the money, and what costs or compromises come with it?

CarGurus Intelligence reported in its Q3 2026 report that U.S. year-to-date new EV sales were down 48%, excluding direct-to-consumer EV brands, while used EV sales were up 19%. It also reported that used-EV inventory rose 60% year over year in September and average used-EV prices fell 5%. These are report-specific measures for different parts of the market, not a direct comparison of the total cost or value of new and used cars.

The distinction matters to a household. More used inventory and lower average used prices may give shoppers more choice, but they do not by themselves establish that a particular used EV is a bargain. A buyer still needs to assess that vehicle’s condition, remaining warranty, charging fit and likely resale value.

Why automakers and buyers are focused on value

Affordability and charging remain practical constraints

Black Book’s 2025 Preview forecast 1.5 million battery-electric vehicle sales, or 9.15% market share, for 2025, and identified affordability and charging-infrastructure concerns. That figure was a forecast published in the preview, not a verified final sales result. It is useful as evidence of the concerns analysts were weighing, not as a statement of what ultimately happened.

Charging access can change the ownership experience. A buyer with a garage and a home charging station may find regular charging more convenient; someone who relies on street or apartment parking may have a harder time arranging it. A vehicle that fits one driver’s routine may therefore be a poor-value purchase for another, even if the sticker prices are similar.

Just one glance gives you complete charging insight. Resale uncertainty can affect the purchase decision

In an April 2025 analysis, Aegon Asset Management said concern had shifted toward EV resale values and expectations that future EVs could be cheaper. The report also said some manufacturers pulled back on BEV manufacturing amid weaker demand and a desire to avoid overinvestment. That is the report’s analysis of manufacturers’ decisions, not proof that every brand or model is retreating.

For a buyer, uncertainty about resale is a reason to make assumptions explicit rather than assume the car will retain a particular share of its price. A lower purchase price on a used EV may reduce the amount at risk, but the available market figures do not predict the resale value of any one vehicle.

Investment arguments are not household purchase advice

In March 2025, Loomis Sayles argued that some automakers’ pullback could benefit Tesla. That is an investment manager’s view about competitive positioning. It does not establish that a Tesla—or any EV—is the best-value car for a particular household, and it should not be confused with a vehicle-level ownership-cost comparison.

How to judge whether an EV is good value for you

Compare the vehicle with the realistic alternatives you would actually buy: a new EV, a used EV, a hybrid or a combustion vehicle. Use the same assumptions for each option. The relevant comparison is not just the advertised price; it is the money spent over the period you expect to own the car, weighed against whether it meets your needs.

  • Purchase cost: Compare the actual price you would pay, including any incentives you are eligible for. Do not treat an incentive as certain until you have confirmed its availability and eligibility for your purchase.
  • Financing: Include the financing cost for the offer and term available to you. A lower sticker price does not necessarily mean a lower total outlay if borrowing costs differ.
  • Depreciation and resale: Consider how long you expect to keep the car and how uncertain its future resale value is. Avoid relying on a single optimistic resale assumption.
  • Charging or fueling: Check where you can charge regularly, how convenient that is for your routine and what charging or fuel costs apply to your use. If home charging is important to the case for an EV, establish that it is practical before buying.
  • Warranty and repairs: Compare the warranty coverage and likely repair exposure for the specific new or used vehicles under consideration. The available market reports do not provide a complete apples-to-apples estimate for these costs.
  • Fit: Confirm the vehicle’s range, space and capabilities against your regular trips and occasional needs. A low price is not good value if the vehicle does not work for your routine.

This comparison may favor different choices for different drivers. Someone with reliable home charging and a vehicle that suits their trips may value an EV differently from someone without convenient charging. A used EV’s lower market price may be attractive, but the specific car’s condition and remaining coverage still matter. The cited sources do not supply enough comparable ownership-cost data to name a universal winner.

A practical decision check before buying

  1. Map your charging routine. Identify where you will charge most often and whether access is dependable. If you park on the street or in an apartment building, verify the real charging arrangement rather than assuming one will be available.
  2. Set a realistic ownership horizon. Estimate how long you expect to keep the vehicle. The shorter or less certain your ownership period, the more important resale uncertainty may be to your decision.
  3. Compare actual candidates. Put the EV alongside the hybrid or combustion vehicle you would otherwise purchase, using prices and financing terms available to you—not broad market averages as a substitute for an individual quote.
  4. Stress-test the value case. Ask whether the purchase still works if resale is weaker than you hope, charging is less convenient than expected, or your driving needs change. If the answer depends on an optimistic assumption, treat that as a risk rather than a guaranteed saving.
  5. Decide based on your use, not the headline. Market-wide sales changes and manufacturer investment choices provide context, but they cannot tell you whether a particular car fits your budget and routine.
