The available sources do not verify that Southwest and American Airlines jointly caused 3,309 flight disruptions or that the FAA issued a warning in response. A secondary report cites 3,309 delays and 101 cancellations nationwide, but it does not establish that those totals belong to the two airlines together or connect them to a specific FAA warning. For a current trip, check your airline’s flight status and the FAA’s airport-status service.
What the 3,309 figure does—and does not—show
The Traveler reported 3,309 flight delays and 101 cancellations in a nationwide episode, but the date and underlying flight-tracking data have not been verified here. Its report names multiple carriers and does not establish that Southwest and American together accounted for the delay total. Delays and cancellations are separate measures, so the two figures should not be combined into an undefined count of “disruptions.” The Traveler’s report is secondary reporting, not a carrier-by-carrier accounting or an FAA incident record.
What the FAA and airlines have documented
FAA actions are separate from the reported total
The FAA’s published statements do not connect the 3,309 figure to a joint Southwest–American disruption or to a warning issued because of it. Separately, on December 1, 2025, the FAA said it was investigating whether certain scheduled airlines complied with an emergency flight-reduction order covering 40 high-impact airports during the government shutdown. The FAA said carriers with more than 10 daily operations at a covered airport were in scope; the order allowed fines of up to $75,000 per flight exceeding the limits. That was a distinct enforcement matter, not evidence about the reported delay total. The FAA’s chronology and status guidance are on its General Statements page.
Southwest reported schedule cuts in November 2025
Southwest said it reduced its schedule by approximately 4% across 34 of the more than 117 airports it served during the November 2025 flight-reduction period. Its November 7 update estimated about 120 cancellations Friday, just under 100 Saturday, and around 150 Sunday. These were Southwest’s figures for its own schedule changes, not the nationwide 3,309 delay count. Southwest’s November 7 update provides the company’s account.

These are Southwest’s reported operational measures for that period, not independent system-wide figures. The employee message gives the airline’s figures.
American’s travel alerts are itinerary-specific
American’s travel-alert page, marked current as of September 30, 2026, lists conditional fee waivers for specified travel dates and itineraries. Terms can depend on ticketing and rebooking windows, keeping the same origin and destination, and paying any fare difference. A listed waiver is not a blanket exemption for all travelers or flights; check the current terms for your itinerary on American’s travel alerts and advisories.

Why the FAA and DOT records do not establish joint responsibility
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s flight-delays page lists consumer-protection orders involving Southwest and American. Those separate records do not show that the airlines jointly caused a particular delay total. A sound carrier comparison would require the same date range, the same definition of delay or cancellation, a shared data source, and counts for each airline. The available records do not provide that comparison. See the DOT’s Flight Delays information.

How to check whether your flight is affected
- Check your airline first. Use the airline’s flight-status tool or app for the latest status and any rebooking options. The FAA advises travelers to check with their airline about flight status.
- Check airport conditions. Use the FAA’s real-time airport status service for airport-level information. An airport advisory is not a substitute for your airline’s status for a specific flight.
- Read any travel alert closely. Confirm that your travel dates and itinerary qualify, and check deadlines, origin-and-destination requirements, and possible fare differences before changing a ticket.
