Coffee Meets Bagel’s founders turned down Mark Cuban’s reported $30 million offer to buy the company on Shark Tank in 2015. They said they believed the dating service could become much bigger. A 2025 article later described the company as worth more than $150 million, but did not explain how that valuation was calculated—so that figure should be treated as a media claim, not a confirmed sale price or audited valuation.
What happened on Shark Tank?
In January 2015, the Kang sisters—Dawoon, Arum and Soo Kang—appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank seeking $500,000 for 5% equity in Coffee Meets Bagel. ABC News reported that Mark Cuban offered $30 million to buy the entire company. The founders declined; the offer was a proposed acquisition, not an investment deal they accepted on the show. ABC News reported the offer and the founders’ ask.
Why did Coffee Meets Bagel reject $30 million?
Dawoon Kang told ABC News that the founders believed Coffee Meets Bagel could become “a much bigger company” and that selling at that point would mean selling themselves short. In 2019, Arum Kang similarly told GeekWire that a sale would have been “way, way, way too early.” Their explanation was about expected future potential: they preferred to keep building the business rather than accept an immediate buyout.
That conviction explains their decision; it does not prove that the company later achieved the scale or value they hoped for. Turning down an acquisition also meant retaining the risks of running and financing the company instead of taking the proposed sale proceeds. GeekWire’s 2019 interview recounts Arum Kang’s explanation.

How the company’s reported milestones unfolded
| Date | Milestone | What the figure does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| 2012 | Coffee Meets Bagel says the Kang sisters founded the company after seeing a need for online dating oriented toward lasting relationships. | This is the founding date given in the company’s own history. Coffee Meets Bagel’s About Us page provides the company account. |
| January 2015 | ABC News reported a $30 million acquisition offer from Mark Cuban, which the founders rejected. The sisters had asked for $500,000 for 5% equity. | The $30 million was an offer to buy the company, not a completed transaction. ABC News. |
| July 2015 | ABC News reported that the user base had more than doubled since the January show appearance and that the company had raised $7.8 million in external funding. | These are dated 2015 reports. ABC did not give a precise user count in the growth statement; neither figure is a current metric. ABC News’ July 2015 follow-up. |
| 2019 | Co-founder Arum Kang said Coffee Meets Bagel had raised a $12 million Series B round that year and about $20 million in total. | She declined to disclose the company’s valuation. GeekWire. |
| February 2025 | The Korea Daily described Coffee Meets Bagel as valued above $150 million. Dawoon Kang told the publication the company had raised nearly $20 million. | The article supplies no valuation method or independent support. Its valuation figure is a media-reported estimate, not an established transaction price or audited company valuation. The Korea Daily’s 2025 article. |
Is Coffee Meets Bagel really a $150 million company?
The defensible answer is that a February 2025 Korea Daily article reported a valuation above $150 million, but the article did not state the method, identify a transaction that established the value, or provide independent supporting data. The number should therefore be attributed to that report rather than presented as a verified valuation. It is not evidence that the company generated $150 million in revenue, sold for that amount, or has a publicly confirmed current value.
Funding figures are also snapshots, not interchangeable measures of value. ABC News reported $7.8 million in external funding in 2015; Arum Kang said in 2019 that total funding was about $20 million; and Dawoon Kang said in 2025 that funding was nearly $20 million. The difference in wording and dates does not establish a current audited financing total. A 2015 funding figure should not be read as the company’s valuation, either.

Did the company become what its founders hoped?
The available milestones show continued operation and reported growth and financing after the television appearance, but they do not establish whether the founders’ hoped-for scale or value was realized. ABC News’ 2015 coverage also reported company revenue figures and forecasts shared around the show: $87,000 in 2013, about $270,000 in the first five months of 2014, a $1 million forecast for 2014, and a $10 million plan for 2015. Those were historical company figures and forecasts—not confirmation that the forecasts were met. ABC News’ contemporaneous account gives the figures.
There is also a founding-date discrepancy in later coverage. Coffee Meets Bagel’s own history says it began in 2012, while the 2025 Korea Daily article gives 2014. The company’s stated date is used here, with attribution, rather than treating the conflicting later date as settled.
