Re:

The Crucial Role of Financial Markets in the Global Economy

Financial markets connect savers with businesses and governments seeking financing. Their global links support economic activity but can also spread financial stress.

Financial markets help move money from savers to borrowers, give companies and governments ways to raise financing, and let investors trade financial claims. Together with banks and other financial institutions, they support economic activity and monetary policy. Because those connections cross borders, they can also carry financial stress from one market or country to another.

How do financial markets affect the global economy?

Financial markets are part of a broader financial system that connects people and institutions with funds to invest to businesses and governments that need financing. The system also includes banks, nonbank lenders, insurers, investment funds, payment providers, clearing counterparties, central banks, and regulators. The IMF describes this system as a framework for economic transactions and monetary policy that channels savings into investment and helps finance commercial activity. IMF, “Financial System Soundness” (January 23, 2023).

That connection can support productive activity: a business may use financing to expand, while investors receive a financial claim in return. But markets do not guarantee that funds will be allocated well, that an investment will succeed, or that economic growth will follow. Their contribution depends on the availability and terms of financing, the capacity of institutions to manage risk, and the stability of the system around them.

How do markets and banks connect savers with borrowers?

There are two broad routes. In bank-based finance, a bank takes deposits or other funding and makes loans. In market-based finance, a borrower raises funds by issuing securities—such as bonds or shares—that investors can buy. These routes can complement one another; neither describes the whole financial system on its own.

Issuing a claim and trading it later

When a company or government sells a new bond or share, the transaction is a primary issuance: the issuer receives funds. Later trades between investors take place in secondary markets. Those trades transfer ownership of existing claims rather than directly raising new money for the issuer. Secondary trading can nonetheless matter to borrowers because the prospect of being able to sell an asset may affect investors’ willingness to buy it in the first place.

Risk sharing is possible, not assured

Financial claims let borrowers and investors distribute exposures among different parties. That can help finance activity and allow investors to choose which risks to hold. But the price of a claim and the willingness or ability of others to bear its risk can change. When confidence or financing conditions deteriorate, markets may transmit or amplify pressure rather than absorb it.

Why is liquidity important—and what does it mean?

Liquidity has two related but distinct meanings. The Bank for International Settlements distinguishes market liquidity, the ease of raising cash by selling assets, from funding liquidity, the ease of raising cash by issuing new obligations to investors. BIS, “Global liquidity indicators: background and interpretation” (March 2015).

For example, an institution may own assets it expects to sell, but face difficulty obtaining cash by issuing new debt. Conversely, it may be able to borrow but find that a particular asset can only be sold at a steep discount. The two forms of liquidity can affect one another: difficulty selling assets can weaken confidence in a borrower, while difficulty obtaining funding can force asset sales. Neither is captured fully by a single market statistic.

Why does the global reach of finance matter?

Financial relationships link institutions, borrowers, and investors across national borders. A shock in one place can therefore affect financing conditions elsewhere, including through cross-border credit and securities holdings. The IMF warns that financial stress can spread across sectors and countries, while the BIS tracks some of these links through its Global Liquidity Indicators.

Those BIS indicators measure credit to nonbank borrowers, including bank loans and funding raised in global bond markets through international debt securities. Their overview emphasizes foreign-currency credit in US dollars, euros, and Japanese yen to borrowers outside the respective currency areas. The data are quarterly, and the portal uses IMF World Economic Outlook classifications, extended to countries covered by the BIS. This is a defined way to monitor particular cross-border credit channels, not a complete census of global finance. What benefits do financial markets bring, and what can go wrong?

Well-functioning markets and institutions can help mobilize savings, broaden financing options, support transactions, and enable economic activity. Those functions are not the same as stability: the same interconnected system can carry losses and funding pressure across markets and borders.

  • Deeper downturns: Financial disruption can reduce the flow of credit and make an economic contraction more severe.
  • Capital flight and exchange-rate pressure: Investors moving funds out of a country can intensify financial stress and put downward pressure on its currency.
  • Disrupted intermediation and monetary policy: Strains in financial institutions or markets can interfere with the channels through which funds move and policy operates.
  • Public fiscal costs: Rescuing troubled institutions can impose costs on governments and taxpayers.
  • Cross-border spillovers: Connections between countries and financial sectors can transmit stress beyond its original source.

These are among the crisis consequences described by the IMF in its overview of financial-system soundness. IMF, “Financial System Soundness” (January 23, 2023).

What financial-stability concerns are current?

The IMF’s April 2026 Global Financial Stability Report identifies stretched asset valuations, pressure in sovereign bond markets, and the growing role of nonbank financial institutions as concerns for that edition. These are time-specific risks highlighted by the report, not a timeless description of every market or a prediction that a crisis will occur. IMF, “Global Financial Stability Report” (April 2026 edition).

In an IMF briefing released April 14, 2026, Tobias Adrian, Financial Counselor and Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department, said markets had been functioning in an orderly manner and noted central-bank liquidity facilities, structural improvements such as central clearing, and resilient banks. He also cautioned: “the resilience is not assured in all states of the world.” The distinction matters: stability at a particular moment does not remove the possibility of stress under different conditions. IMF press briefing with Tobias Adrian (April 14, 2026).

How should readers interpret global-finance indicators?

No single number can summarize the health or reach of global finance. The BIS notes that global liquidity is not directly observable and that indicators must be interpreted flexibly rather than treated as an all-purpose score. A measure of cross-border foreign-currency credit, for example, can illuminate a particular financing channel without capturing all market activity, risk, or liquidity conditions. BIS, “Global liquidity indicators: background and interpretation” (March 2015).

The BIS statistics portal collects data on banking, financial markets, and other topics to support analysis of the global financial system. Its coverage is useful for examining specific questions, but the meaning of any series depends on what it measures and the period it covers. BIS Data Portal, “BIS statistics” (accessed October 8, 2026).
