The cheapest model is only a bargain if it runs the software required for your course, lasts through a day of classes, and does not need immediate upgrades or accessories.
For the 2025 buying cycle, the 13-inch MacBook Air with Apple’s M3 chip was the strongest all-round choice in testing because the newer M4 model pushed M3 pricing down. The right pick changes by budget and workload, however: a Chromebook can cover browser-based schoolwork for much less, while creative and technical students may need to spend more on memory, storage, and application compatibility.
Important date note: this is the 2025 selection, not the later 2026 update of the underlying guide. The M3 MacBook Air may now be sold mainly through remaining retailer inventory rather than directly by Apple, so compare the exact configuration and warranty before buying.

1. Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (M3, 2024): best overall student laptop
The M3 MacBook Air was the sensible 2025 choice for many college students. Its appeal was not that it had the newest processor; it was that the arrival of the M4 model made the M3 version more attractive as a value purchase. A student who mainly needs a dependable machine for writing, research, video calls, spreadsheets, presentations, and light creative work does not necessarily benefit from paying extra for the newest chip.
#1 Best Overall
- BUILT FOR COLLEGE. AND BEYOND — MacBook Air with the M5 chip packs blazing speed and powerful AI capabilities into an incredibly portable design. And with up to 18 hours of battery life,* this thin and light powerhouse is ready to take on almost any major, just about anywhere.
- TEAR THROUGH TOUGH ASSIGNMENTS — With its faster CPU and unified memory, the M5 chip delivers even more performance and fluidity across apps, making multitasking and creative workflows smooth and responsive. A powerful Neural Engine and next-generation GPU with Neural Accelerators give you a powerful platform for AI.
- MAKE QUICK WORK OF YOUR TO-DO LIST — Apple Intelligence helps you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly — whether it’s for school or everyday life. With groundbreaking privacy protections, it gives you peace of mind that no one else can access your data — not even Apple.*
- UP TO 18 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Air delivers incredible battery life with amazing performance, so you can power through a full day of classes without worrying about plugging in.
- A BRILLIANT 13.6-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Air supports 1 billion colors, making photos and videos pop with rich contrast and sharp detail, and text appears supercrisp. So everything — from class presentations to movies to games — looks truly stunning.
The tested model has a 13.6-inch display, weighs 2.7 pounds (1.24kg), and delivered 14 hours 19 minutes in TechRadar’s battery testing. Available configurations span 8GB to 24GB of memory and 256GB to 2TB of storage. For a four-year degree, 16GB RAM and at least 512GB storage are preferable when the price difference is manageable.
There is one recurring practical annoyance: the Air has only two Thunderbolt ports. If you need a monitor, external drive, memory card reader, wired network connection, or USB accessories, budget for a hub. Also check the seller’s return policy, because the M3 was no longer being sold directly by Apple and remaining stock may vary.
2. Asus Chromebook CM14: best budget option
The CM14 is appropriate when the student’s workload is almost entirely browser-based: Google Docs, email, online research, learning platforms, streaming lectures, and basic document work. The tested configuration used a MediaTek Kompanio 520 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC storage, and a 14-inch display. It ran for 9 hours 26 minutes in TechRadar’s battery testing.
Its stated 2025 guide price was $299/£299, but that is a historical reference rather than a current price promise. Compare today’s listing against newer Chromebook models before assuming an old discount is worthwhile.

The low price comes with visible compromises. The trackpad and display are unremarkable, and 4GB of RAM limits multitasking. It is a poor choice for 3D rendering, professional video editing, demanding engineering tools, or other applications that require Windows or macOS. A Chromebook is not simply a cheaper Windows laptop; it uses ChromeOS and has a different application ecosystem.

3. Microsoft Surface Laptop 13 (2025): best lightweight Windows option
The Surface Laptop 13 is a strong fit for students who want a small Windows machine and value battery life above maximum performance. Its cited configuration combines an eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus processor, Adreno X1-45 graphics, 16GB LPDDR5X memory, and a 256GB SSD. The 13-inch 1920×1280 60Hz touchscreen keeps the machine compact, and its approximately 1.22kg weight makes it easy to carry between lectures.
Battery life was a standout: testing recorded more than 17 hours of continuous use. That can reduce the need to carry a charger or hunt for outlets during a long campus day.
Do not buy it solely because it is a Windows laptop. The Snapdragon processor makes this a Windows-on-Arm system. Many mainstream applications work well, but students should verify compatibility with required specialist software, plug-ins, drivers, and testing tools. The display is adequate rather than exceptional, ports are limited, and it offers less performance per dollar than the M4 MacBook Air.

4. Apple MacBook Air 15-inch (M4, 2025): best for creative students
The 15-inch M4 Air is the better fit for students who will regularly work with photographs, design projects, video, or large visual timelines. It has a 15.3-inch 2880×1864 Liquid Retina display, a 10-core M4 CPU, integrated 10-core GPU, up to 32GB unified memory, and up to 2TB SSD storage.
The larger screen gives more usable workspace for editing tools and side-by-side documents without the weight and fan noise associated with many performance laptops. Choose 16GB memory as a practical floor for serious creative coursework, and consider 512GB or 1TB storage if projects will live locally.

- AN AMAZING MAC AT A SURPRISING PRICE — With an incredibly portable and durable aluminum design, up to 16 hours of battery life,* and the A18 Pro chip, MacBook Neo is ready to go wherever school takes you.
- FOUR STUNNING COLORS. ONE DURABLE DESIGN — Choose from four beautiful colors — Silver, Blush, Citrus, or Indigo — each with a color-coordinated keyboard. And MacBook Neo is made with a durable recycled aluminum enclosure that helps it reach 60 percent recycled content by weight — the most ever in any Apple product.*
- FLY THROUGH EVERYDAY ASSIGNMENTS — Whether you’re cramming for finals, using Apple Intelligence* to summarize class notes, creating presentations, or even playing the latest Apple Arcade game,* MacBook Neo delivers the performance and AI capabilities you need to get things done.
- UP TO 16 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Neo delivers all day battery life, so you can power through from early morning classes to late night study sessions without worrying about plugging in.
- A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.
For a student writing essays and attending online classes, though, this is likely unnecessary spending. The larger display and higher specification are valuable only when the workload uses them.
5. Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 360: best convertible Chromebook
The Galaxy Chromebook 2 360’s 360-degree hinge and touchscreen let it switch between laptop and tablet modes. That is useful for presentations, reading, and handwritten or touch-based notes when the software supports them. Its listed hardware includes a 12.4-inch 2560×1600 touchscreen, Intel Celeron N4500 processor, integrated Intel UHD graphics, and 64GB eMMC storage.

Memory listings vary: one source lists 4GB LPDDR4x, while another 2025 listing showed 8GB. Those are materially different configurations, especially when several browser tabs and Android applications are open.
This is a convenience-first Chromebook, not a performance laptop. Its processor, storage, and battery life are weak for demanding multitasking. It makes financial sense only when the student’s work is light and the convertible design will genuinely be used.
6. Dell XPS 13 (2025): best premium student laptop
The Dell XPS 13 is aimed at students who want premium construction, a high-end display, and substantial performance in a small body. Higher configurations reach a second-generation Intel Core Ultra 9, integrated Intel Arc graphics, 32GB LPDDR5X memory, a 13.4-inch 3K OLED touchscreen, and 2TB SSD storage. Testing produced nearly 24 hours of battery life.

- LEAN. MEAN. M3 MACHINE — With a powerful 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU, the blazing-fast MacBook Air with M3 chip is a superportable laptop that sails through work and play.
- BUILT FOR APPLE INTELLIGENCE — Apple Intelligence helps you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly. It draws on your personal context while setting a brand-new standard for privacy in AI. Coming in beta this fall.
- PORTABLE DESIGN — Lightweight and under half an inch thin, so you can take MacBook Air anywhere you go.
- UP TO 18 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Amazing, all-day battery life so you can leave the power adapter at home.
- A BRILLIANT DISPLAY — The 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display supports 1 billion colors.
That specification is more than most students need, but it can make sense for a demanding productivity workload, frequent travel, or someone who wants to keep the laptop well beyond graduation. The financial downside is connectivity: there are only two USB-C ports and no other physical ports. Add the cost of a hub, adapters, or wireless peripherals to the purchase price.
How much laptop should a student buy?
Start with the institution’s requirements, not with processor branding. A course may specify Windows, macOS, a particular graphics capability, or software that does not run on ChromeOS. Ask the department or check its incoming-student technology list before ordering.
| Student workload | Reasonable target | Where to avoid overspending |
|---|---|---|
| Web, documents, email, online classes | Chromebook or entry-level laptop; 8GB RAM can be enough on a Chromebook | Do not pay for a premium CPU or OLED screen you will not use |
| General college work for several years | 16GB RAM and 512GB storage, with a comfortable keyboard and good battery | Do not sacrifice compatibility for a lower headline price |
| Design, photography, video | 16GB–32GB RAM, 512GB–1TB storage, strong integrated or dedicated graphics as required | Do not assume a thin laptop can replace a workstation for every course |
| Engineering, computing, or specialist software | Follow the department’s exact operating-system, RAM, GPU, and software requirements | A Chromebook or unverified Windows-on-Arm model may create expensive problems |
Five checks that prevent a false bargain
- Identify the exact SKU. “MacBook Air M3” and “Galaxy Chromebook 2 360” each cover multiple memory and storage configurations. Compare the full model number, not just the product family.
- Check software before hardware. Confirm required applications, exam browsers, VPNs, drivers, and course plug-ins work on ChromeOS, macOS, or Windows-on-Arm.
- Calculate the complete cost. Include a USB-C hub, charger, case, extended warranty, external storage, and any required software. Compare accessory costs when judging whether one laptop is genuinely cheaper.
- Prioritize memory and storage for longevity. RAM is commonly fixed, so buying 16GB now may be wiser than choosing a cheaper 8GB model that cannot be upgraded. At least 512GB storage is a useful target for many college students.
- Check battery claims and return terms. Published runtime is measured under specific conditions, not a guarantee of a full day of video editing. For clearance M3 stock, verify that the machine is new, has the expected warranty, and can be returned.
How the testing behind these choices matters
The recommendations are based on more than processor specifications. Testing includes synthetic benchmarks, real-world use, keyboard and trackpad comfort, portability, webcam and microphone quality, thermal behavior, and gaming tests where relevant. Battery evaluation includes a looped 1080p video test and the PCMark 10 battery-life benchmark.
Those methods explain why a slower Chromebook can still be a good budget recommendation: it may be entirely adequate for browser work while costing less. They also explain why a premium model is not automatically better value. The useful question is whether its battery, screen, keyboard, ports, or performance solve a problem the student actually has.
FAQ
Is the MacBook Air M3 still a good student laptop in 2025?
Yes, particularly when discounted below the M4 model. It is light, fast enough for general coursework, and lasted 14 hours 19 minutes in TechRadar’s battery testing. Because Apple no longer sold it directly, check retailer stock, the exact memory and storage configuration, and warranty coverage.

Is a Chromebook enough for college?
It is enough for browser-based work such as documents, research, email, and online classes. It is not a safe choice for courses requiring 3D rendering, professional video editing, specialist engineering tools, or software available only for Windows or macOS.
How much RAM and storage should a student laptop have?
For a general-purpose college laptop, 16GB RAM and at least 512GB storage are sensible targets. Eight gigabytes can be acceptable on a Chromebook used for light work, but demanding creative or technical courses may require 16GB to 32GB and more storage.
Are Windows-on-Arm laptops compatible with college software?
Many common applications work, but compatibility should be checked rather than assumed. Confirm that required specialist applications, drivers, plug-ins, VPNs, and exam software support the Snapdragon-based Windows-on-Arm platform.
The Bottom Line
For most students buying in 2025, the 13-inch M3 MacBook Air offered the best balance of portability, battery life, performance, and value—provided the remaining-stock price was clearly below newer models. The Asus Chromebook CM14 was the budget choice for simple browser work, while creative students had a reason to step up to the 15-inch M4 MacBook Air. Before paying, verify course software, choose enough memory and storage for the whole degree, and include adapters and accessories in the budget.
