Japanese companies filed investment applications in Thailand worth more than $11.72 billion between 2021 and mid-2026, according to a report by Kaohoon International published October 7, 2026. The figure covers applications across 1,380 projects; it is not evidence that Thailand and Japan signed a single $11.7 billion deal or that all the proposed spending has been approved or invested.
What the $11.7 billion figure means
Kaohoon International reports that Japanese firms submitted 1,380 applications to Thailand’s Board of Investment (BOI) from 2021 through mid-2026, with a combined value of more than $11.72 billion, or about 396.5 billion baht. The BOI is Thailand’s investment-promotion agency. The report does not establish that this cumulative total represents approved projects, binding commitments, or money already spent. Official sources cited for context do not independently confirm the same five-and-a-half-year aggregate.
It is therefore more accurate to describe the figure as the reported value of Japanese investment applications than as realized investment or the value of a bilateral agreement. An application signals proposed investment and an interest in seeking promotion; it does not, by itself, show that a project received approval, proceeded as planned, or completed its investment.
Did Thailand and Japan sign a new $11.7 billion deal?
The available reporting describes investment applications and a strategic partnership, not a newly signed agreement for $11.7 billion. Thailand’s public statements frame the next stage of cooperation as a shift from “producing for” one another to “producing together” in shared supply chains. That is a policy ambition, not proof that supply chains have already been reorganized or that the reported applications have all advanced to investment.

At the Thailand-Japan Investment Forum 2026, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas was quoted by Kaohoon International as saying: “Thailand and Japan are long-standing economic partners ready to scale up investment cooperation to navigate global economic headwinds, technological leaps, the energy transition, and aging societies.” The remark describes the purpose of closer cooperation; it does not convert the application total into a signed deal.
Which industries are part of the high-tech shift?
The Kaohoon International account names seven priority sectors. It also reports cooperation initiatives in digital infrastructure, advanced chips, renewable power, and carbon markets. The sources do not break the $11.72 billion application figure down by sector, so none of these areas can be assigned a share of that total.

These are reported priorities and programs, not a verified allocation of the cumulative applications among projects.
How the figure compares with other reported investment measures
Other government figures describe different periods and measures. They should not be added to the $11.72 billion application total or treated as interchangeable with it.

| More than $11.72 billion across 1,380 applications | Reported Japanese-company applications to the BOI, according to Kaohoon International | 2021 through mid-2026; Japanese applicants |
| $38.7 billion across 1,300 projects | BOI-approved investment-promotion applications | First half of 2026; applicants from all origins |
| $970.1 million across 47 projects | Japanese investment applications reported by the BOI | First half of 2026; Japanese applicants |
| 184,741 million baht and 248 projects | Cumulative Japanese investment in Thailand and Japanese projects approved by the BOI | Calendar year 2025; reported by the Royal Thai Government |
| More than US$53.204 billion | Bilateral trade between Thailand and Japan | Reported by the Royal Thai Government; not an investment figure |
The BOI’s first-half 2026 release reports $38.7 billion in approved investment-promotion applications across all origins and $970.1 million across 47 Japanese projects. Those six-month figures are not a substitute for, or a confirmation of, the reported 2021-to-mid-2026 Japanese application aggregate. The Royal Thai Government’s 2025 figures likewise refer to distinct measures: cumulative Japanese investment and the number of approved Japanese projects. Its trade figure measures commerce between the countries, not capital investment.

Japan has a long-established manufacturing presence in Thailand. The stated ambition is to build on that base by deepening shared supply chains and moving toward higher-value activity—including advanced electronics, next-generation automotive technology, digital infrastructure, and cleaner energy. In practical terms, “producing together” points to closer coordination across companies and supply-chain stages, rather than simply making goods in Thailand for Japanese buyers or firms.

The policy statements and separate BOI approval figures show interest and government intent, but they do not establish that this transition is complete. Nor do they show that every priority sector has received investment from the reported application total. The eventual scale and results depend on which applications are approved, implemented, and funded.
