What did Tesla order from The Giving Pies?
ABC7 News reported that Tesla contacted The Giving Pies, a San Jose bakery owned by Voahangy Rasetarinera, on Valentine’s Day 2024 about an order of 2,000 mini pies for delivery the following week. Rasetarinera said she sent a quote that a Tesla representative approved. The order was later increased to 4,000 mini pies. ABC7’s account describes pies, not cakes.
Why was the order canceled?
Rasetarinera said payment through Tesla’s vendor had not arrived. After a representative apologized for the delay and asked to double the order, the bakery bought ingredients and turned down other work to prepare for the larger commitment. Tesla subsequently canceled the order, according to ABC7.
Rasetarinera described her usual corporate-order process to ABC7: “They request a quote, I send the quote, they approve, I send the invoice – I’m paid immediately.” She said the Tesla transaction had not followed that pattern before the cancellation.

How much did the bakery lose, and did Tesla pay it back?
The reported $2,000 was the bakery’s stated cost—not the full value of the order. The Guardian amended its February 2024 coverage on February 27 and 28 to clarify that the amount represented supplies and orders the bakery said it had to decline while preparing for Tesla. The Guardian’s report does not establish that The Giving Pies lost the full $16,000 order price.
ABC7 later reported that Tesla reimbursed the bakery $2,000. That follow-up distinguishes the initial cancellation and reported costs from the later reimbursement; it does not say the bakery received the entire order price. ABC7’s follow-up covered the reimbursement.

Did Elon Musk step in to prevent bankruptcy?
ABC7 reported that Musk responded publicly: “Just hearing about this. Will make things good with the bakery. People should always be able to count on Tesla trying its best.” The outlet also reported Tesla’s subsequent $2,000 reimbursement.
The reporting reviewed does not document a bankruptcy filing or establish that bankruptcy was imminent. It supports a narrower account: the bakery owner reported $2,000 in costs after Tesla canceled an order, and Tesla later reimbursed that amount. The headline claim that Musk acted to prevent bankruptcy goes beyond what those reports establish.

What happened to the bakery after the story?
Fortune reported in 2024 that Rasetarinera told Fox Business the shop was seeing roughly 200 customers a day after the story, compared with 30 to 40 on a typical day. Those are figures reported at the time, not current customer counts or evidence of the bakery’s present financial condition. Fortune’s coverage described the customer response.
