Château Louis XIV was reported sold in 2015 for more than €275 million—about $301 million at the time—not the $320 million stated in the original title. The buyer was initially described only as a Middle Eastern purchaser; a 2017 report later identified Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as the owner. The residence, in Louveciennes near Versailles, was newly built in a historic style rather than preserved from the reign of Louis XIV.
Who owns Château Louis XIV, and how much did it sell for?
Bloomberg reported in December 2015 that the private sale brought more than €275 million, approximately $301 million at the time. The report attributed the figure to two people familiar with the transaction. It described the purchaser as a Middle Eastern buyer, and said Christie’s International Real Estate was involved in brokering the deal. Cogemad, the developer, and Christie’s declined to comment at the time. Bloomberg’s 2015 account did not identify the buyer by name.
In 2017, Le Figaro identified Mohammed bin Salman as the estate’s owner and reported that the sale took place in September 2015. The sale price and ownership identification come from journalistic reporting on a private transaction; they should not be mistaken for a publicly reviewed deed or an independently verified current valuation. The $320 million figure in the original title is not supported by the contemporaneous price reporting cited here.
Where is the estate, and how large is it?
The château is in Louveciennes, in the Yvelines department of the Paris region, between Versailles and Marly-le-Roi. AFP reported a 23-hectare park and approximately 5,000 square metres of living area. Those are reported property figures, not a current survey. AFP’s 2015 report covered the sale and the estate’s scale.

Is Château Louis XIV actually from the time of Louis XIV?
No. Despite its name and its seventeenth-century château appearance, the residence was a modern construction developed by Cogemad. Bloomberg reported that it took about three years to build, citing the developer’s website. The architecture draws on French château traditions; the building itself is not an original residence from Louis XIV’s reign. Bloomberg’s report describes the construction and styling.
What features and grounds have been reported?
Bloomberg, relaying information from Cogemad’s website, listed an aquarium, a cinema, a wine cellar and an outdoor fountain covered in gold leaf. The developer also described parterres, flowers, marble statues, bridle paths and a hedged labyrinth in the park. These are reported features and promotional descriptions, not firsthand observations or an independent assessment of the property.

Cogemad’s garden description, reproduced by Bloomberg, said the grounds “evoke the genius of Le Notre.” That is the developer’s characterization of the landscaping, rather than an independent appraisal.

The reports cited here establish neither a current market value nor a subsequent ownership change after the 2017 identification. They also do not provide a comparable-sales dataset that would support an unqualified claim that the château was the world’s most expensive home. The clearest account is bounded by what the reports say: a 2015 sale above €275 million, approximately $301 million at the time, followed by a 2017 report naming Mohammed bin Salman as owner.
