Neither leasing nor buying is automatically the better value for a Tesla. Compare the total cost over the same period using your actual lease and financing quotes, expected mileage, local taxes and fees, and likely resale value. Leasing may suit a shorter ownership horizon and mileage that fits the contract; buying may suit drivers who expect to keep the car longer, drive more, or want the option to sell or retain it.
This comparison is for U.S. shoppers considering a new Tesla. Tesla terms, offers, and state availability can change; the terms and federal tax guidance described here were checked on October 8, 2026.
How to compare the total cost
Compare both choices over the same number of years. A lower monthly payment does not by itself mean a lower total cost: leasing generally leaves you without the vehicle at the end of the term, while buying may leave you with a vehicle you can keep or sell.
| Cost to include | Lease | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront and monthly costs | Amount due at signing, scheduled payments, and applicable taxes and fees. | Cash price or down payment, loan payments, and applicable taxes and fees. |
| Financing cost | Use the actual lease quote and contract terms; Tesla says its estimate is not guaranteed and may exclude taxes and fees. Tesla leasing terms | Include APR, loan term, and total interest from the actual financing offer. Tesla lists financing terms of 36 to 84 months, subject to credit approval and state availability. Tesla financing terms |
| Mileage and return | Account for the contract mileage allowance, possible excess-mileage charges, and any return charges that apply. | Estimate how mileage may affect resale value; the cited Tesla sources do not provide a resale forecast. |
| End-of-period value or next car | Include the cost of returning the car and replacing it, or the contract-specific cost to buy it if that option is available. | Subtract estimated resale proceeds or remaining equity at the comparison date. If you keep the car, account for its value and future ownership costs. |
The available Tesla sources do not establish model-specific depreciation, insurance, maintenance, repair, or operating costs. Use estimates that fit the exact vehicle, location, and circumstances rather than assuming either choice has a universal cost advantage.

When leasing may fit better
- You want a shorter commitment and expect to replace the car at the end of the lease.
- Your expected annual driving fits the contract allowance, or you have included the cost of extra miles in your comparison.
- The lease quote’s due-at-signing amount and monthly payment work for your cash flow, and you qualify under the lender’s underwriting.
Tesla describes U.S. lease terms of 24 to 36 months. Its leasing page says excess mileage may incur a charge of $0.25 per mile. Eligible Tesla Lease Trust customers may be able to buy extra mileage under stated conditions; check the contract and Tesla’s current terms rather than assuming extra miles are available. Tesla’s lease pricing tool is described as available for Model 3 and Model Y. Availability depends on state and delivery location, and Tesla says estimates are not guaranteed, may exclude taxes and fees, and are subject to underwriting. “Leasing is only available to qualifying customers,” Tesla Support states. Check the live offer for your location; an advertised estimate is not an approval or a final price. Tesla leasing terms

When buying may fit better

- You drive more than the lease allowance and would otherwise incur mileage charges.
- You prefer ownership flexibility and can compare a specific cash price or loan offer against the lease quote.
Tesla lists cash purchase and financing through Tesla or a third-party financier. Tesla’s stated financing range is 36 to 84 months, subject to credit approval and state availability; Tesla financing is unavailable in some states. Compare APR, down payment, term, and total interest, and check whether a self-arranged loan is available for your purchase. These are financing options, not evidence that one lender will offer the lowest cost. Tesla financing terms Tesla third-party financing information
Buying is not automatically cheaper over a longer period: the result depends on the purchase price, financing, taxes, costs of ownership, and what the car is worth when you sell or compare costs. The cited sources do not supply a resale value or a like-for-like total-cost calculation for a particular Tesla.

Check federal tax rules before using an incentive in your calculation
Federal clean-vehicle credits
The IRS says federal new, previously owned, and commercial clean-vehicle credits are unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. Do not count one toward a new Tesla lease or purchase in October 2026. The IRS describes a transition rule for vehicles acquired by the cutoff under a binding contract and payment, even if possession came later, subject to other requirements. IRS clean-vehicle credit guidance
Interest on certain vehicle loans
For tax years 2025 through 2028, the IRS describes a deduction of up to $10,000 per year for interest paid on certain qualifying new personal-use vehicle loans. Its overview describes an income phaseout above modified adjusted gross income of $100,000 for single filers and $200,000 for joint filers. Lease payments do not qualify. Eligibility rules apply, so confirm the current IRS instructions or consult a tax professional before including a deduction in your estimate. IRS vehicle-loan-interest guidance

State, local, and utility offers
Local incentives may still exist, but eligibility, funding, deadlines, and redemption rules depend on the program and location. Tesla’s incentives page can point shoppers toward examples, including charger rebates; verify any offer with the sponsoring agency before counting it as a saving. Tesla incentives information

Do not assume you can purchase every leased Tesla at the end of its term. Tesla says the agreement and lessor determine whether a purchase option exists. For Tesla Lease Trust, Tesla describes a lease-end purchase fee of up to $350, plus local taxes and fees; its support page says Iowa and Louisiana are not eligible for the described purchase option. If your lessor is a third party, check that lessor’s contract and options. Tesla leasing terms Tesla lease-end options

Quick Recap
Make a decision using your own quotes
- Choose a comparison period. Use the same intended number of years for both options. If you are comparing a lease with a purchase you expect to keep longer, include the cost of successive leases or the bought car’s resale value at the same comparison date.
- Get location-specific figures. Use the live lease and purchase quotes for your model and delivery location, including taxes, fees, and due-at-signing amounts. Confirm state availability and approval requirements.
- Match the mileage assumption. Estimate your annual driving and compare it with the lease allowance. Include any excess-mileage charges or eligible prepaid mileage cost in the lease total.
- Calculate lease cost through the end date. Add signing costs, scheduled payments, applicable fees, likely mileage charges, and return costs. If you may buy the car, include that option only if your agreement permits it and use the contract’s terms.
- Calculate purchase cost through the same date. Include the cash price or down payment, loan payments and total interest, applicable taxes and fees, and estimated ownership costs. Subtract a realistic resale estimate or remaining equity if you would sell.
- Apply only incentives or tax treatment you can substantiate. Do not use ended federal clean-vehicle credits for a new transaction after the cutoff. Verify any local program with its sponsor and check loan-interest deduction eligibility with current IRS guidance.
- Compare both totals and the flexibility you value. The lower estimated cost is only as reliable as its resale, mileage, tax, and ownership-cost assumptions; also consider whether you want the ability to keep or sell the vehicle.
