That is a historical company-revenue figure—not 10% of lidar-only sales and not evidence that Luminar lidar was installed in Tesla production cars. Industry coverage described testing and validation use, but the filing does not disclose why Tesla bought the sensors.
What Luminar disclosed about Tesla’s purchases
Luminar’s Form 10-Q for the three months ended March 31, 2024 reported that Tesla represented 11% of Luminar’s revenue. Luminar reported total quarterly revenue of $20.968 million.
The denominator matters: the filing describes Tesla’s share of Luminar’s total company revenue for that quarter. It does not say Tesla made up 11% of lidar-only sales, nor does the figure mean Tesla paid 11% of its own revenue to Luminar. TechCrunch rounded the contribution to more than $2 million in its May 7, 2024 coverage and described Tesla as Luminar’s largest lidar customer in Q1; the filing’s 11% figure is the more precise measure of revenue concentration.
Why Tesla bought lidar is not established by the filing
The 10-Q does not identify the purpose of Tesla’s purchases, name a vehicle program, state how many sensors were bought, provide a per-sensor price, or disclose contract terms. Luminar’s Autonomy Solutions business sells lidar sensors primarily to automotive original-equipment manufacturers, commercial-vehicle makers, robotaxi operators, and adjacent industries; the segment also earns revenue from engineering services and information licensing. The filing does not break Tesla’s contribution down among those products or services.

Industry coverage offers relevant context, but not a confirmed transaction explanation. Optics & Photonics News reported that Tesla was known to use lidar units to test and validate vision data. That supports describing testing and validation as a reported use—not as a purpose disclosed by Luminar or Tesla.
Testing is different from production equipment
A company can use lidar in development or validation without fitting it to customer vehicles. The available sources report testing and validation context, but do not establish that Luminar lidar was standard equipment on any Tesla production model. They also do not establish a mass-production integration, deployment scale, or a reversal of Tesla’s production-sensor strategy.

Elon Musk’s criticism provides the contrast behind the headline. TechCrunch reported that at Tesla’s 2019 Autonomy Day event, Musk said, “anyone relying on lidar is doomed!” and called lidar “expensive sensors that are unnecessary.” Those remarks do not reveal the engineering rationale for Tesla’s later reported purchases. Testing a technology is not the same as adopting it in production, and the quotes alone do not settle Tesla’s policy or plans.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Tesla still Luminar’s top buyer?
The 11% figure and “largest customer” description apply to Q1 2024, not to the present. Luminar’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed March 27, 2026, does not mention Tesla by name. That omission does not prove the relationship ended, but this filing does not confirm Tesla as a current customer or top buyer.

How to read the headline claim
| Claim | What the cited evidence establishes |
|---|---|
| “10% of sales” | Luminar’s Q1 2024 filing reports Tesla at 11% of Luminar’s total revenue for the quarter ended March 31, 2024—not 10% of lidar-only sales. |
| “Top buyer” | TechCrunch described Tesla as Luminar’s largest lidar customer in Q1 2024. The later 2025 annual filing checked here does not identify Tesla or establish a current ranking. |
| “Tesla used Luminar lidar” | Industry coverage reported testing and vision-data validation context. The SEC filing does not state the purchase purpose or establish installation in production cars. |
| Musk called lidar a “crutch” | His reported criticism contrasts with the reported purchases, but does not establish why Tesla bought sensors or what it intended to deploy. |
