Tesla is facing a wrongful-death lawsuit in Massachusetts over a fatal 2025 crash. The complaint alleges that Samuel Tremblett, 20, survived the initial crash but could not escape his burning 2021 Model Y because its electric door handles failed and its manual releases were difficult to find. Those claims have not been proven in court.
What happened in the Tremblett lawsuit?
Jacquelyn Tremblett filed Tremblett v. Tesla, Inc., case No. 1:26-cv-10567, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts on February 4, 2026. Boston.com reported that the suit followed an October 29, 2025 crash in Easton, Massachusetts, in which her son Samuel died. Boston.com’s February 5, 2026 report summarizes the complaint.
What does the complaint allege about the door handles?
According to Boston.com’s account of the complaint, Samuel survived the crash, but the Model Y caught fire and he could not get out. The complaint alleges that after electrical failure the exterior handles would not extend, the interior releases were electronic, and the manual releases were not clearly marked or intuitive for someone attempting to escape quickly.
The report says first responders could not remove Samuel because of the severity of the fire, and firefighters spent four hours extinguishing it. These are claims reported from the complaint, not findings by a court. Boston.com said the suit seeks $25 million in compensatory damages, a jury trial, and attorney fees.

What was said in the 911 transcript?
Boston.com reproduced excerpts from a 911 transcript included in the complaint. Samuel reportedly said, “I’m stuck in a car crash,” and, “I can’t get out, please help me.” He later said, “I can’t breathe. … It’s on fire … I’m going to die.” The news report attributes these lines to the transcript; they have not been independently authenticated here.
What is the lawsuit’s status?
The available docket listing for Tremblett v. Tesla shows an order allowing Tesla until October 14, 2026, to answer. However, the listing says its docket was last retrieved June 30, 2026, so it does not establish whether any later filings or court actions occurred. The Justia docket listing identifies the case and displays the procedural entries available through that retrieval date. The answer extension is not a decision on the merits.

What does the complaint say about earlier reports?
The complaint reportedly lists 17 cases dating back to 2016 in which Tesla received reports of adults and children trapped during thermal-runaway events. That number is an allegation attributed to the plaintiff’s complaint, as reported by Boston.com; it is not an independently verified count and should not be treated as an established safety statistic.
How is this different from the other Tesla door-handle case?
The Tremblett case is separate from a Washington federal lawsuit brought by Jeff and Wendy Dennis concerning a 2018 Model 3. The Associated Press reported that the Dennis complaint alleges the car suddenly accelerated, crashed, and caught fire, and that door-handle problems thwarted bystanders trying to rescue the occupants. Wendy Dennis died and Jeff Dennis was injured. Those claims, like the Tremblett allegations, remain allegations and do not establish the facts or outcome of the other case. The Associated Press reported on the Dennis lawsuit on November 25, 2025.

What has Tesla said?
Boston.com reported that Tesla did not return a request for comment on its February 2026 article. That report does not establish the company’s response to the lawsuit at a later date. Boston.com also reported at that time that U.S. auto safety regulators were probing complaints about Tesla door handles; the article alone does not establish the investigation’s current status.
