Tesla Deliveries by Year, 2011–2021: From the Series’ Zero to 936,172

Tesla’s original 2011–2021 delivery sequence ends at 936,172, the preliminary 2021 total. Later company filings report revised figures, including 936,222 for 2021.

Tesla’s January 2, 2022 release reported 936,172 vehicle deliveries for 2021, a preliminary figure that capped a steep rise in the year-by-year series below. It is not the later total in Tesla’s 2021 annual filing: that Form 10-K reported 936,222. The figures belong to different reporting vintages, so the table preserves the sequence associated with the original Tech Times article rather than blending it with later revisions.

Tesla deliveries by year, 2011–2021

The following is the annual sequence published in the Tech Times article by Jon Erlichman. It begins at zero in 2011 and ends at the preliminary 2021 figure of 936,172. These are annual deliveries, not cumulative deliveries through each year.

Calendar year Deliveries in the Tech Times sequence
2011 0
2012 2,650
2013 22,477
2014 31,655
2015 50,580
2016 76,295
2017 103,097
2018 245,240
2019 367,550
2020 499,550
2021 936,172

The source has an internal discrepancy for 2019: its article text says 367,550, while an embedded list says 367,500. The table follows the article text. Tesla’s January 2020 preliminary release described 2019 deliveries as approximately 367,500, while its later 2019 Form 10-K reported 367,656. This sequence should therefore be read as that article’s reporting vintage, not as a fully reconciled run of final company filings.

How to read the rise

The series rises gradually through 2017, then shows much larger annual totals in 2018 and 2019, followed by another sharp increase in 2021. That describes the delivery trajectory, but the table alone does not establish why it changed. It also does not show revenue, profit, cash flow, or other measures of financial performance.

Why later Tesla figures differ

Tesla’s January 2, 2022 production-and-deliveries release reported 936,172 deliveries for 2021: 24,964 Model S/X and 911,208 Model 3/Y. Tesla later reported 936,222 for 2021 in its Form 10-K, a difference of 50 vehicles. The 936,172 figure is the preliminary number used in the title-linked sequence; 936,222 is the later company-filed total.

Retrospective company figures also differ from entries in the Tech Times sequence. Tesla’s 2022 operational summary gives adjusted totals of 103,181 for 2017, 245,506 for 2018, 367,656 for 2019, 499,647 for 2020, and 936,222 for 2021. For comparison, Tesla’s 2019 Form 10-K reports 367,656 deliveries for 2019. These numbers come from later company reporting and should not be silently substituted into the original sequence.

What “zero in 2011” means

The zero is the start point of the Tech Times annual series, not proof that Tesla had never delivered a vehicle by the end of 2011. Tesla’s 2011 Form 10-K says approximately 2,150 Roadsters had been delivered cumulatively by December 31, 2011. The filing also says the Roadster production run concluded in January 2012. Annual deliveries in a particular series and cumulative deliveries since the company began are different measures.

How Tesla counted deliveries

In its January 2, 2022 release, Tesla said it counted a vehicle as delivered only after it had been transferred to the customer and all paperwork was correct. The company called its preliminary count “slightly conservative” and said final numbers could vary by 0.5% or more. Tesla also cautioned that delivery counts alone should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results.
