The Wall Street Journal reported on April 30, 2025, that Tesla board members had contacted executive-search firms about a possible successor to Elon Musk. The next day, Tesla chair Robyn Denholm denied that the board had contacted recruitment firms to start a CEO search, calling the report “absolutely false.” The public record establishes the report and the denial, but does not independently settle whether the alleged contacts took place.

What the report alleged—and Tesla’s response

The Journal’s report, as described by contemporaneous coverage, said Tesla board members had approached executive-search firms about finding a potential successor to Musk. The reporting linked the alleged activity to Musk’s time spent on the Trump administration’s government-efficiency work and to board requests that he spend more time at Tesla. Those details are the Journal’s account, not independently established facts.

On May 1, 2025, board chair Robyn Denholm denied that Tesla’s board had initiated a CEO search. In a statement carried on Tesla’s social account, she said: “This is absolutely false (and this was communicated to the media before the report was published).” She added: “The CEO of Tesla is Elon Musk and the Board is highly confident in his ability to continue executing on the exciting growth plan ahead.” The Guardian reported the denial; Reuters’ account, carried by Investing.com, also summarized it.

Why Musk called the article an ethics breach

Musk also attacked the Journal’s reporting. The Guardian reported that he called it “an EXTREMELY BAD BREACH OF ETHICS” to publish a “DELIBERATELY FALSE ARTICLE” without an unequivocal denial beforehand. Those are Musk’s accusations about the article and its publication process, not independent findings that the report was false or that the Journal acted unethically.

How succession planning differs from a specific CEO search

Tesla’s 2025 proxy materials describe succession planning as an ongoing board responsibility and express confidence in Musk. Those disclosures provide context about routine governance planning; they do not confirm the Journal’s specific claim that board members contacted search firms. The distinction matters: a company can plan for leadership continuity without having launched the particular search described in a news report.

Tesla’s 2025 definitive proxy statement and its proxy materials on succession planning and the special committee process are useful for understanding the board’s stated governance framework, not for resolving whether the reported outreach occurred.

What later filings say about Musk’s role

Tesla’s 2026 annual filing identifies Musk as the company’s CEO and says he has held that role since October 2008. This later description confirms his listed status in that filing; it does not establish whether the alleged outreach happened in 2025. Tesla’s 2026 filing is available through the SEC.

What can—and cannot—be concluded

The evidence available publicly leaves a clear disagreement: the Journal reported outreach to search firms, while Denholm denied the board initiated a search. Anonymous-source reporting and a company chair’s public denial are different forms of evidence. The cited accounts establish that both the report and denial occurred, but they do not independently adjudicate whether board members made the alleged contacts.
