Technology, Renewable Growth and Supply Chains: What the Forum’s Work Means

Technology can improve coordination in energy and manufacturing, but resilience and climate benefits depend on workforce, materials, access and environmental choices.

Technology can help energy and manufacturing systems work more efficiently, coordinate supply chains and widen access to services—but it does not guarantee lower emissions, secure supplies or better-paid jobs. The exact title “Technology As Power to Empower, Renewable Growth, and Global Supply Chains at Economic Forum” could not be verified as an official event or session. This article instead connects related work reported by the World Economic Forum (WEF), the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and the European Commission, without attributing claims to unidentified speakers.

How technology can support renewable growth and stronger supply chains

Digital tools can give manufacturers and energy providers more visibility into operations: where materials are, how equipment is performing and where delays or waste may be developing. Better information can help firms coordinate production and respond to disruption. In energy systems, digitalization can also support the planning and operation of renewable infrastructure. These are potential mechanisms, not proof that adopting a technology will automatically improve reliability or cut emissions.

WEF’s framework connects resilience, technology, people and sustainability

The WEF Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chains describes four areas of work: resilient value chains, technology and innovation, people-centric transformation, and sustainable systems. That framework matters because a supply-chain upgrade is not only a software or equipment decision. It also affects workforce skills, production choices and the environmental consequences of making and operating the technology.

The centre brings together business, government, academia and civil society. In its 2024–2025 reporting period, it launched Beyond Cost: Country Readiness for the Future of Manufacturing and Supply Chains, which includes a Global Readiness Index intended to inform decisions about value chains and production footprints. The index is a decision aid described by the Forum, not a guarantee that a particular location or supply chain will withstand a future shock.

Renewable projects involve infrastructure and materials choices

The WEF also reports work on clean power, industrial decarbonization, renewable infrastructure and critical minerals for the energy transition. Its Five Principles for Responsible Deployment of Renewables Infrastructure were developed by public-private leaders to guide projects toward benefits for people and the planet. Those are the principles’ stated aims; they do not establish that every project meets them.

For supply chains, the practical tension is that renewable infrastructure depends on physical inputs as well as digital systems. A project may support cleaner power while relying on materials whose extraction, processing or availability raises environmental or security questions. Decisions about sourcing, project design and resilience therefore belong alongside deployment targets.

What the reported figures do—and do not—show

The WEF’s Annual Report 2024–2025 reports the following initiative and network figures. They describe the Forum’s own programmes, not a complete count of manufacturing sites, workers or independently verified economic outcomes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Reported figure What it refers to How to interpret it
36 new sites; 189 total Sites joining the WEF Global Lighthouse Network in the 2024–2025 reporting period A Forum-reported network count, not a census of all advanced manufacturing sites.
Projected shortfall of two million workers A projection for US manufacturing associated with an announced Industry 4.0 career-path initiative A projected labor shortfall, not a current count of unfilled vacancies.
More than 750 million people reached as of June 2025 The WEF’s Reskilling Revolution initiative “Reached” is the initiative’s reported measure; it does not by itself establish job placement or lasting employment outcomes.
More than one billion people in over 100 countries The WEF’s EDISON Alliance, which reports connecting people to digital services in healthcare, education and finance An initiative-reported reach figure tied to those service areas, not evidence that every person received the same level of access or benefit.

These figures illustrate different dimensions of change: industrial adoption, anticipated workforce needs, reskilling activity and digital access. They are not directly comparable measures of success, and none alone establishes whether a transition has improved wages, affordability or long-term job quality.

Why digital systems also raise environmental and access questions

The technology itself has a footprint

Digital tools require devices, networks, data centres and electricity. The IGF’s 2023 reports discuss the environmental effects of digitalization, including device impacts, energy use and sustainable manufacturing. One IGF page cites a figure of 730 million tonnes of CO₂, described as 1.4% of global emissions, and attributes it to an Ericsson report. That is a secondary attribution in the IGF material; it should not be read as a figure independently verified here.

The implication is not that digital technology should be rejected, but that its costs should be counted alongside any efficiency or renewable-energy benefits. Device lifetimes, energy sources, manufacturing practices and end-of-life handling can all affect the overall result.

Access and critical dependencies shape who benefits

The WEF’s reported EDISON Alliance reach points to digital inclusion in healthcare, education and finance as part of technology’s potential to expand opportunity. But access depends on infrastructure and skills, and an initiative’s reach figure does not show how evenly benefits are distributed.

In Commission document C(2023) 2178, the European Commission identifies strategic dependencies in critical raw materials and digital technologies as concerns for the EU’s green and digital transitions. That frames supply-chain resilience as more than a logistics question: access to essential inputs and technologies can influence whether countries and businesses can carry out those transitions.

What households can reasonably take from the forum’s work

For personal finances, these institutional reports are context rather than a basis for predicting a particular investment return, energy-bill saving or job outcome. Their relevance is in the channels through which industrial and digital transitions may affect household finances: employment and skills demand, the reliability and cost of essential services, and the availability of energy and manufactured goods. The sources cited here do not quantify those effects for individual households.

  • Separate projections from current conditions. The WEF’s two-million-worker figure is a projection for US manufacturing, not a count of vacancies today.
  • Look for outcomes, not reach alone. Programme participation or reported reach does not establish durable employment, higher pay or equal access.
  • Consider full-system effects. A technology’s potential efficiency gains should be weighed against its energy use, material inputs and supply dependencies.
  • Do not treat a policy framework as a guarantee. Readiness indices and responsible-deployment principles can guide decisions, but they do not prove that a project will be resilient, affordable or sustainable in practice.

WEF Managing Director Kiva Allgood described the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chains as aiming to develop actionable solutions and focus on the “how” of responsible industry transformation amid geopolitical uncertainty. That is a statement of purpose, not evidence that the centre’s initiatives have already achieved every stated aim. The useful test for any technology-led transition is whether it improves resilience and access while accounting for its workforce, materials and environmental consequences.
