Its April and July 2026 publications describe a possible downside scenario—not a prediction that a correction is certain or imminent.
What the IMF warned about
In its April 2026 discussion of the economic outlook, IMF directors said: “A reassessment of expectations regarding AI could lead to a decline in investment and trigger an abrupt financial market correction.” The warning is conditional: it describes what could happen if expectations change, not what the IMF says will happen.

The July 2026 World Economic Outlook Update sets out the potential sequence in more detail. If investors lower their expectations for AI-related productivity gains or profitability, technology-intensive businesses could face retreating investment and reduced valuations. The IMF says frothy equity prices could correct sharply, particularly in economies exporting AI and markets concentrated in technology companies. Falling asset values could then weigh on consumption through the effect on wealth.

“Global financial turmoil” is a broader description than the specific language in these IMF passages. They discuss an abrupt market correction and possible spillovers, but do not say that a global crisis has begun or is inevitable.

How a change in AI expectations could spread
A repricing would begin with investors revising what they expect AI-related businesses and investments to earn. If expected returns fall, companies may scale back investment and investors may pay less for shares. Lower prices can reduce the wealth and risk appetite of exposed investors, while a broad retreat from similar holdings can intensify market declines.
An IMF scenario-planning exercise identifies several conditions that could amplify those movements. These are risks considered in a scenario analysis, not reported outcomes or quantified forecasts:
Rank #2
- Herding and automated trading: AI-driven trading strategies could encourage investors to move in the same direction, disconnect price movements from fundamentals, amplify bubbles, and increase volatility and uncertainty.
- Leverage: Borrowing to finance AI-related investment can magnify losses when asset prices fall. The exercise also flags rapid obsolescence of capital as a risk to investments that lose value sooner than expected.
- Concentrated exposures: Heavy exposure to a limited number of technology firms or markets could make a repricing more disruptive for the investors and financial institutions holding those positions.
- Economic feedback: Weaker business investment and household wealth can weigh on spending and incomes, which may make debt harder to service. In the exercise’s more severe “runaway” scenario, large job losses could weaken household balance sheets and raise consumer-credit defaults.
The IMF does not attach a probability or estimated scale to these possible effects in the cited material. The scenario identifies channels through which stress might travel; it does not establish that each link will occur.
What the 2025 DeepSeek sell-off does—and does not—show
The IMF’s April 2025 Global Financial Stability Report documents a sharp market reaction after DeepSeek announced a potentially lower-cost AI language model on January 27, 2025. On that day, the S&P 500 information technology sector fell by more than 5 percent, while the overall S&P 500 fell 1.5 percent. The report links investor concern to whether earnings forecasts for major US stocks would be met.

The episode illustrates how new information can rapidly change expectations about technology companies and their valuations. It was a one-day repricing centered on technology equities, not evidence that the event caused global financial turmoil. The IMF also noted a countervailing possibility: lower-cost models could reduce costs, encourage wider adoption, and spread AI’s potential returns more broadly. A technology development can therefore unsettle some business expectations while creating opportunities elsewhere.

| Question | What the cited IMF material establishes |
|---|---|
| Is a correction forecast? | No. The April directors’ discussion and July outlook describe a possible downside scenario. |
| What could trigger it? | Weaker expectations for AI-related profitability or productivity gains. |
| Could effects reach beyond technology shares? | Yes, potentially. The July outlook discusses wealth effects on consumption, and the scenario exercise considers leverage, concentrated exposures, and financial feedback loops. |
| Does the 2025 episode prove a future crisis is coming? | No. It records a specific market reaction to changed expectations, not a global crisis or a forecast of one. |
| When might a future correction occur, and how likely is it? | The cited publications do not provide a timing estimate or probability. |
For investors and households, the distinction is between a plausible vulnerability and a prediction. The IMF’s concern is that unusually optimistic expectations, concentrated positions, borrowing, or synchronized trading could make a future reassessment harder to absorb. Its publications do not say that every AI investment is overvalued, that AI gains will fail to materialize, or that a downturn is imminent.
