Re:

NVIDIA and AMD’s Valuation Gap: Is One Stock Really Safer?

NVIDIA’s reported forward P/E was far below AMD’s at the October 6, 2026 close. The gap is real for that snapshot, but it does not prove NVIDIA is categorically safer.

At the October 6, 2026 close, a third-party comparison put NVIDIA’s forward price-to-earnings ratio at 19.78 and AMD’s at 58.48. That is a striking valuation gap, but it does not establish that NVIDIA is “far safer.” Forward P/E depends on forecast earnings as well as share price, and the available figures do not provide a matched risk model for the two companies.

The more defensible conclusion is narrower: NVIDIA’s shares carried a lower reported earnings multiple on that date, while NVIDIA also reported much greater revenue scale and AMD reported substantial growth and profitability. Whether that makes NVIDIA the safer investment depends on what risk matters to you—valuation risk, earnings durability, execution, or exposure to changing demand.

What the valuation split shows—and what it does not

A comparison summarized by MobileStalk using Stock Analysis data reported these figures at the October 6, 2026 market close; the report was updated October 7. They are a dated third-party snapshot, not company guidance.

Metric NVIDIA AMD
Share price $239.24 $649.42
Market capitalization $5.78 trillion $1.06 trillion
Trailing P/E 30.25 165.76
Forward P/E 19.78 58.48

The difference between the share prices does not show which company is cheaper: share counts differ, so price per share alone is not a useful comparison of total valuation. The P/E ratios relate price to earnings, but the two measures look backward and forward in different ways. Trailing P/E uses reported earnings; forward P/E uses forecast earnings.

  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

As the comparison notes, forward P/E depends on the estimate set, provider and timing; it is not a guarantee of future earnings. A lower multiple can reflect a lower price relative to expected earnings, but it does not prove that a stock is undervalued, that its earnings estimates will be met, or that it carries less business risk. Because the snapshot is time-sensitive, treat the ratios as observations for that date rather than current quotes or a permanent ranking.

Recent results show a large difference in scale

NVIDIA: fiscal Q2 2027

For the quarter ended July 26, 2026, NVIDIA reported revenue of $96.2 billion, up 18% sequentially and 106% year over year. Data Center revenue was $89.0 billion, up 117% year over year. The company reported GAAP gross margin of 75.0% and GAAP diluted earnings per share of $2.46. These are GAAP figures; NVIDIA also reports non-GAAP measures separately.

  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti

For its full fiscal 2026 year, which ended January 25, 2026, NVIDIA reported revenue of $215.9 billion, up 65% from the prior year. Those results establish substantial reported scale and growth in the cited periods, but do not by themselves show how those results will develop.

AMD: Q2 2026

AMD reported Q2 2026 revenue of $11.5 billion. Its GAAP results included gross margin of 54%, operating income of $2.0 billion, net income of $2.3 billion and diluted EPS of $1.38. On a non-GAAP basis, AMD reported gross margin of 56%, operating income of $3.1 billion, net income of $2.8 billion and diluted EPS of $1.66.

  • Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

These figures show meaningful growth and profitability, but AMD’s reported revenue was far below NVIDIA’s in the periods cited. Growth rates should not be mistaken for equal scale: both companies can grow rapidly while starting from very different revenue bases. And comparisons of profitability should use the same accounting basis—GAAP against GAAP or non-GAAP against non-GAAP—not mix the two.

Why the lower multiple does not settle which stock is safer

“Safer” can mean several different things, and they do not necessarily point to the same stock:

  • Less valuation risk: NVIDIA’s lower reported forward P/E may mean investors were paying less per dollar of forecast earnings on the snapshot date. That advantage depends on the forecasts being comparable and reasonably accurate; it does not eliminate the risk of a price decline.
  • Greater current earnings and revenue scale: NVIDIA’s cited quarterly revenue was much larger. Scale can matter to an investor’s assessment of a business, but the figures alone do not establish that future revenue or earnings are more predictable.
  • Less execution risk: This asks whether each company can deliver on the growth implied by its valuation. The cited multiples and historical results do not provide a matched forecast or execution-risk assessment.
  • Lower demand or concentration risk: AMD’s FY2025 filing identifies uncertainties involving product demand, market growth and competition, customer concentration, international sales, financing, and legal and regulatory developments for emerging technologies such as AI. The available material does not provide an equivalent, matched risk ranking for NVIDIA, so it cannot establish which company has lower overall business risk.

NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang said, “AI has reached its inflection point. It’s doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue.” That is management’s characterization of demand, not independent confirmation that demand will persist or meet expectations. AMD chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su described AMD’s Q2 2026 as an “excellent quarter,” citing record revenue and profitability and Data Center revenue more than doubling year over year. That, too, is management’s characterization of reported performance—not a guarantee about future results.

How to use the comparison as an investor

Before treating the valuation gap as a reason to buy either stock, check whether the comparison still holds and whether it fits your definition of risk:

  1. Use a synchronized valuation snapshot. Compare both companies on the same date and from the same data provider. Record whether you are looking at trailing or forward P/E; forward figures should identify the estimate provider and forecast period.
  2. Check what is behind expected earnings. A forward multiple is only as useful as the estimates in its denominator. Consider how much future growth those estimates assume and how the investment case changes if earnings fall short.
  3. Compare like with like in reported results. Note each fiscal period, revenue growth and accounting basis. Keep GAAP measures separate from non-GAAP ones, and do not infer comparable scale from comparable growth percentages.
  4. Define the risk you want to reduce. Decide whether you mean the risk of paying too much, unpredictable earnings, demand weakness, customer concentration, competition, or execution. A single P/E ratio cannot answer all of those questions.
  5. Account for your own investment horizon and exposure. A dated valuation comparison cannot determine which stock is appropriate for an individual investor or predict future performance.

Company outlooks and product plans are management expectations, not achieved results. AMD’s FY2025 filing and related materials identify areas of uncertainty, but the evidence cited here is not a direct, balanced comparison of every risk facing both firms. Investors should read each company’s current filings and results before relying on the snapshot for a decision.

Bottom line on the “far safer” claim

The October 6, 2026 snapshot showed NVIDIA at a substantially lower reported forward P/E than AMD, alongside much greater revenue scale in the cited quarterly results. Those facts may support a case that NVIDIA had less valuation pressure on that date, but they do not prove it was categorically safer, underpriced, or more likely to outperform. The valuation gap is a starting point for examining forecasts and business risks—not a safety verdict.
