It covered leadership changes at Microsoft, Expedia Group, Amazon, magniX, Shipium, Infosys, NEXT Trucking, and LeoStella. The status of these executives may have changed since the original reports.
Shawn Bice returned to Microsoft as cloud security vice president
Shawn Bice returned to Microsoft in June 2022 as corporate vice president of cloud security. The move brought him back to Microsoft after senior roles at Amazon and Splunk.

Bice had previously worked at Microsoft as a general manager before joining Amazon in 2016 as vice president of databases. He later became president of products and technology at Splunk. In a June 21, 2022 announcement, Bice described security as fundamentally a data problem. His stated focus included using telemetry from devices, applications, operating systems, networks, storage, on-premises environments, and multiple clouds to help counter ransomware and other threat actors.

Bice also moved to Microsoft from Splunk—not directly from Amazon.

Susan Athey resigned from Expedia Group’s board
Susan Athey resigned as a member of Expedia Group’s board of directors, effective immediately. Expedia’s Form 8-K says Athey informed the company on June 21, 2022, and specifically states that her resignation was not due to a disagreement with Expedia, its management, or its board.
The filing is dated June 22, 2022. Its cover page lists June 16 as the date of report, apparently reflecting the annual-meeting reporting context; it should not be simplified to say that Athey resigned on June 16. The operative timing in the filing is her June 21 notice and immediate effectiveness.

Athey was a Stanford economics professor and had served as consulting chief economist for Microsoft. She also held advisory and board positions, although those roles can change over time. The filing’s no-disagreement language supports a narrow conclusion: Expedia disclosed an immediate board resignation and said it was not prompted by a dispute. It does not establish a broader explanation for her decision.
Amazon saw operations leadership departures during a reorganization
Amazon executives Alicia Boler-Davis and Dave Bozeman departed the company during operations leadership changes reported in June 2022.
- Alicia Boler-Davis was Amazon’s senior vice president of global customer fulfillment and a member of the company’s senior leadership team.
- Dave Bozeman was vice president of Amazon Transportation Services.
The departures occurred as Amazon reorganized parts of its operations leadership. Around the same time, Amazon announced that Doug Herrington would become CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores after Dave Clark’s planned departure. GeekWire’s report on Herrington’s promotion provides that surrounding context.

The available reporting does not establish the precise reasons Boler-Davis or Bozeman left. The safest description is that their exits took place amid a broader organizational reshuffle—not that the reorganization necessarily caused either departure or that the executives left for performance-related reasons.

John Saabas became chair of magniX
John Saabas was appointed chairman of magniX, the electric-aviation company. Saabas previously led engineering and technology at Bombardier Transportation. Before becoming chair, he had served as an adviser to magniX and chaired its technical steering committee.
Outgoing chair Dominique Spragg remained with the company as an adviser. The leadership transition came as magniX focused on product development, certification, and commercialization. The company’s announcement described Saabas’s aviation and transportation experience as relevant to those priorities.
At the time, magniX and Harbour Air had also partnered with Swiss battery company H55 on electric commuter-aircraft work, according to GeekWire. GeekWire separately reported a $74.3 million NASA award connected to electric-aviation demonstration technologies. That figure should be described as a NASA award or contract, not automatically as equity investment or unrestricted company funding.

Seattle-area fulfillment technology company Shipium hired three executives in June 2022:

- Jason Kerner, senior vice president of sales engineering; and
- Brian Thom, vice president of sales.
Shipium builds fulfillment-management tools for e-commerce retailers. Its target customers included mid-sized retailers that needed more sophisticated fulfillment software but lacked the resources to build Amazon- or Walmart-scale systems internally. More information about the company is available on Shipium’s website.
Best Value
GeekWire had previously reported that Shipium raised $27 million in financing. That funding helped explain the company’s expansion, but the available reporting does not prove that the financing directly caused any individual hire.
Other Pacific Northwest technology moves
The June 2022 roundup also included these appointments:
- Joseph Williams joined Infosys as a consulting partner leading its global cybersecurity strategy consulting group.
- Randall Tau moved from Amazon Transportation Services to NEXT Trucking as senior vice president of operations.
- Mike Kaplan became vice president of business development at LeoStella after working in business development for defense and space at Belcan.
These changes span cybersecurity consulting, freight logistics, space technology, electric aviation, cloud security, and e-commerce fulfillment. They are best understood as separate personnel announcements collected in one dated digest, rather than as a single coordinated industry event.

What this 2022 roundup does—and does not—establish
The reports confirm the roles and transitions described above as of June 2022. They do not establish the executives’ current employers or board memberships as of 2026, nor do they provide a complete later history for each person.
For the most precise record, distinguish between an announcement date and an effective date. Bice’s Microsoft return was announced June 21, 2022; Athey’s Expedia resignation was reported as effective immediately after her June 21 notice. Similarly, Amazon’s leadership departures should be separated from the contemporaneous promotion of Herrington, and Shipium’s financing should not be treated as proof of a causal link to its hiring.
