The milestone reflected company financing and cumulative chip shipments at that time—not 20 million finished consumer devices or a current shipment rate.
What Syntiant announced in March 2022
Syntiant said the new $55 million round included five new investors, naming Renesas Electronics Corporation, Millennium Technology Value Partners and Mirae Asset Capital. Existing investors also participated. The release said investment in the company since its 2017 founding had exceeded $100 million. Syntiant’s March 28, 2022 announcement is the primary source for those figures.
A contemporaneous EE Times report published March 30, 2022 described Syntiant’s total raise as $120 million. That is a different formulation from the company’s statement of more than $100 million invested since founding; the two figures should remain attributed to their respective sources rather than treated as interchangeable exact totals.
What Syntiant makes—and what “20 million chips” means
Syntiant makes Neural Decision Processors: purpose-built, low-power processors designed to run deep-learning tasks at the edge, in devices that can analyze inputs such as voice, audio, sensor data and images. The company’s 2022 release listed possible application categories including earbuds, wearables, smartphones, smart speakers, laptops, automobiles, and consumer and industrial Internet of Things devices. These are use cases, not a list of specific products confirmed to contain Syntiant chips.

The shipment milestone referred to more than 20 million NDPs shipped, not 20 million finished devices sold to consumers. Syntiant also reported more than 50 customer engagements; that phrase does not establish that 50 customers had deployed products using its processors.
In the announcement, CEO Kurt Busch said the company had reached a pivotal point after shipping more than 20 million NDPs as demand for edge AI grew among device makers. The statement was made in 2022 and is company commentary, not independent verification of market demand.
How Syntiant said it would use the funding
Syntiant said it would use the new capital to enhance its software capabilities and accelerate deployment of its planned third-generation Syntiant Core architecture. It framed the processors as a combination of hardware and software for adding always-on AI functions to power-constrained devices.
The release also claimed its NDPs typically offered more than 100 times the efficiency improvement and more than 10 times the throughput of low-power microcontroller-based solutions. Those are Syntiant’s comparisons: the release did not define enough benchmark conditions to treat the figures as universal results.

What happened after the funding announcement
The 2022 plan should not be confused with a later product launch. Syntiant introduced the NDP250 on April 9, 2024, describing it as a Core 3 processor for imaging, speech and sensor applications in power-constrained devices. The company listed person detection, object classification, automatic speech recognition, text to speech and motion tracking as example uses. Its 2024 announcement said the NDP250 was sampling at that time; this dated statement does not establish present-day retail availability.
Syntiant reported more than 30 GOPS of hardware acceleration and support for more than 6 million neural parameters in 8-bit mode for the NDP250. CEO Kurt Busch also described its tensor throughput as five times that of the previous generation. These are specifications and performance comparisons reported by Syntiant, not independent benchmark results.

The company’s history page places the 20-million-plus shipment milestone in 2022 and records later milestones including the NDP115 in 2023 and NDP250 in 2024. A 2026 SEC registration-statement search result uses broader retrospective wording, combining NDP devices and AI software models shipped since inception and placing a 20-million-plus milestone by 2021. Because that statement groups chips and software models and differs in timing from the 2022 release, it is not the same measure as the March 2022 claim of more than 20 million NDPs shipped.
