Swissquote is a legitimate, established online broker—not a scam. Swissquote Group Holding Ltd is a publicly traded Swiss financial group, and its regulated subsidiaries operate under financial regulators in the countries where they provide services. That does not make every message, website or “Swissquote adviser” genuine: scammers can impersonate well-known brokers, and investments held through a real broker can still lose money.
The important question is not just whether “Swissquote” is legitimate. It is whether you are dealing with the correct Swissquote legal entity, website and bank account.
What is Swissquote?
Swissquote is a Swiss online banking and brokerage group offering services such as share dealing, ETFs, funds, foreign exchange, CFDs and, through relevant services, cryptocurrency exposure. The group is associated with Swissquote Bank Ltd, a Swiss bank regulated by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA).
Swissquote Group Holding Ltd is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange. It has operated for decades rather than appearing recently as an anonymous trading website. Those are strong indicators that the genuine business is real, but they are not a reason to ignore basic checks. A scammer can copy a company’s name, logo, regulatory details and staff profiles.

- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
Swissquote’s services differ by country. A customer opening an account through a Swiss, UK, EU or other regional website may contract with a different subsidiary, receive different investor protection and face different product restrictions. Always identify the legal entity in the account-opening documents rather than relying on the brand name alone.
Is Swissquote regulated?
The genuine Swissquote group operates through regulated entities. Swissquote Bank Ltd is supervised in Switzerland by FINMA and is a member of the Swiss Banks and Securities Dealers’ ombudsman arrangements. Swissquote’s UK business has historically operated through a UK-regulated entity, but the applicable permissions and protection should be checked directly on the FCA Financial Services Register before applying.
Regulation is meaningful, but it is not a guarantee that an investment will make money. A regulator checks matters such as capital, governance, conduct and client-asset rules. It does not protect you from a falling share price, a poorly chosen fund, excessive leverage or a bad trading strategy.
How to check the correct entity
- Open the regulator’s official register yourself. For a UK service, use the FCA Register at
register.fca.org.uk; for a Swiss service, use FINMA’s official institution or supervisory information. - Search for the legal company name, not only “Swissquote”.
- Compare the register’s website, address, telephone number and permitted activities with the details on the site contacting you.
- Check the legal entity named in the terms and conditions and account-opening agreement.
- Do not treat a copied FRN, licence number or regulator logo as proof. Clone firms routinely copy genuine details and change the contact information.
A register entry confirms a firm’s status and permissions. It does not prove that a particular salesperson, advert, email address or WhatsApp account belongs to that firm.

The most common fraud is impersonation. A criminal may use a domain resembling Swissquote’s, buy a search advert, copy the firm’s branding or claim to be an account manager. The conversation often moves to WhatsApp or Telegram, where the victim is encouraged to deposit more money, install remote-access software or pay a “tax” before withdrawing.
Rank #2
Be especially cautious if someone:
- contacts you unexpectedly about an investment opportunity;
- promises guaranteed returns or unusually high monthly profits;
- pressures you to deposit immediately;
- asks for your password, one-time passcode or remote access to your computer;
- directs you to a different bank account or cryptocurrency wallet;
- claims your withdrawal is blocked until you pay a tax, insurance fee or release charge; or
- offers to recover money lost in an earlier investment scam for an upfront payment.
Use the web address you typed or bookmarked yourself. Do not follow a login link supplied by a caller or social-media account. The padlock icon alone proves only that the connection is encrypted; it does not prove that the site is operated by Swissquote.
What happens to client money and investments?
Regulated brokers generally separate client assets from the firm’s own money and records. If the broker fails, this structure is intended to allow customer investments and cash to be identified and returned, subject to reconciliations, custody arrangements and any shortfall.
The exact protection depends on the Swissquote entity, account type and asset. Shares and funds are not the same as uninvested cash. A Swiss banking relationship may involve Swiss deposit protection rules; a UK investment account may fall under UK client-money, Financial Services Compensation Scheme and Financial Ombudsman arrangements where the relevant conditions are met. An EU account may have a different national compensation scheme.
Do not assume that the protection available in Switzerland automatically applies to a UK or EU account, or that every product is covered in the same way. Read the account’s protection statement and identify the failed legal entity to which the limit would apply.
Protection does not cover market losses
If you buy a share for £1,000 and it falls to £600, compensation schemes do not normally reimburse the £400 investment loss. Protection is primarily relevant to a firm failure, missing client assets or an eligible cash-deposit claim—not to normal investment risk.
Rank #3
Products and trading risks
Swissquote’s product range can include ordinary investments and higher-risk trading products. These should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Product | Main risk | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Shares and ETFs | Prices can fall; foreign markets add currency and market-hour risk. | Dealing fee, custody fee, FX spread and tax treatment. |
| Funds | Underlying assets can lose value and fund charges reduce returns. | Ongoing charge, dealing timetable, exit rules and fund currency. |
| CFDs and leveraged products | Losses can be rapid and leverage magnifies small price movements. | Margin rules, overnight financing, spread and negative-balance protections. |
| Forex | Currency movements and leverage can produce large losses. | Contract size, margin call procedure and total spread/commission. |
| Cryptocurrency-related products | Extreme volatility, liquidity and custody risks may apply. | Whether you own the asset, a derivative or an exchange-traded product. |
CFDs and forex are particularly unsuitable for many beginners. A professional-looking platform, research tool or “risk score” does not reduce the underlying risk. Never trade leveraged products with money needed for rent, bills or emergency savings.

Swissquote’s charges vary substantially by country, product, exchange and account type. A headline “commission-free” offer may still involve an FX conversion charge, spread, custody charge, market-data fee or other cost.
Before funding the account, find the tariff or fee schedule for your exact entity and answer these questions:
- Is there a minimum deposit or account-opening requirement?
- Is there a custody, platform or portfolio fee?
- What is the dealing commission for your chosen exchange?
- How is the foreign-exchange rate set, and is a separate percentage added?
- Are there fees for corporate actions, transfers, withdrawals or paper statements?
- Are real-time prices included or charged separately?
- For CFDs, what are the spread, overnight financing and guaranteed-stop costs?
- Are taxes, levies or exchange fees added to the displayed commission?
Compare the total cost of a realistic transaction rather than one advertised rate. For example, a £5,000 US share purchase can incur a dealing charge and a currency conversion cost both when buying and when later selling or converting the proceeds back to sterling.

Account access and withdrawals
Security checks can make a legitimate broker feel slower than an unregulated website. Identity verification, source-of-funds questions and limits on withdrawals to a verified bank account are normal anti-money-laundering controls.
A delay is not automatically evidence of fraud. It becomes more concerning when the person requesting money is not the broker’s verified support team, the payment destination changes, or the firm demands an invented release fee. Contact Swissquote using the telephone number or secure message facility displayed after independently navigating to its official website. Do not use the number in the suspicious message.
Check whether your bank transfer recipient exactly matches the regulated entity named in your agreement. Do not send money to an individual, a personal account, a cryptocurrency wallet or a third-party payment processor unless the broker’s official instructions clearly explain and support that arrangement.
What are the main disadvantages?
- Complex fee schedules: costs can depend on the market, currency, product and service.
- Different regional terms: the Swiss, UK and other country offerings are not necessarily identical.
- Higher-risk products: the same brand may offer CFDs, forex or crypto-related trading alongside long-term investments.
- Currency exposure: overseas assets can lose value in sterling even when the foreign share price is unchanged.
- No protection from poor performance: regulation and compensation schemes do not turn investing into a guaranteed-return product.
What to do if you think you have contacted a scammer
- Stop sending money and stop communicating through the suspicious channel.
- Do not pay a further “recovery” or withdrawal fee.
- Contact your bank immediately and ask whether a transfer or card payment can be recalled.
- Change passwords from a clean device and revoke remote-access software or unknown sessions.
- Report a UK fraud to Action Fraud and report the clone to the relevant regulator.
- Keep screenshots, emails, telephone numbers, wallet addresses, payment references and website addresses.
- Contact the genuine broker through independently verified details if you supplied personal information or believe an account was opened in your name.
FAQ
Is Swissquote a safe broker?
The genuine Swissquote group is an established, regulated financial business. Safety still depends on the legal entity you use, the account protection applicable in your country and the risks of the investments you choose. No broker removes market or leverage risk.
Is Swissquote regulated in the UK?
Check the FCA Financial Services Register for the exact Swissquote UK legal entity and its current permissions before opening an account. Do not rely on an FCA number supplied by an unsolicited contact or a website.

Does Swissquote guarantee returns?
No legitimate regulated broker should promise guaranteed profits from ordinary investing or leveraged trading. A guaranteed-return offer using the Swissquote name is a major scam warning sign.
Can I lose more than I deposit with Swissquote?
With ordinary unleveraged shares or funds, the investment can generally fall substantially, potentially to zero, but you do not normally owe more merely because the price falls. CFDs, forex, options and other leveraged products can create additional risks; read the product-specific loss and margin rules before trading.
What should I do if a Swissquote representative contacts me on WhatsApp?
Treat an unsolicited WhatsApp investment approach as suspicious. Do not share login details or send funds. Navigate independently to the official Swissquote website and contact its support team using verified details.
Are Swissquote fees competitive?
That depends on the market and product. Compare the full tariff, including custody charges, dealing commissions, FX conversion, spreads, financing, withdrawal and transfer costs. A low headline commission does not necessarily mean a low total cost.

Swissquote is a legitimate broker and financial group, not a scam. Its regulated status and public-company history support that conclusion. The practical risks are different: investments can fall, leveraged products can cause rapid losses, and scammers can impersonate the brand.
Before depositing money, confirm the legal entity on the relevant regulator’s register, use an independently verified website, check the complete fee schedule and make sure the payment recipient matches the broker’s official instructions. If an unsolicited “Swissquote” contact promises guaranteed returns, requests a personal payment or demands money to release a withdrawal, assume it is fraudulent until independently proven otherwise.
