Swissquote is a legitimate forex and investment broker, not a scam. It is part of Swissquote Group Holding Ltd, a publicly listed Swiss financial group. Its principal Swiss banking entity, Swissquote Bank Ltd, is authorised and supervised in Switzerland, while other customers may contract with separate Swissquote companies regulated in the UK, Luxembourg, Malta, Dubai, Singapore or elsewhere.
That distinction matters more than the brand name. Your leverage limit, investor protection, compensation scheme, available products and complaint procedure depend on the legal entity named in your account agreement. Swissquote is a genuine broker, but it is not automatically the right choice for every forex trader: its pricing can be less competitive than specialist CFD brokers, and leveraged forex remains a high-risk product.
Swissquote at a glance
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is Swissquote a real company? | Yes. Swissquote Group is a publicly listed Swiss financial group with banking and brokerage operations. |
| Is Swissquote regulated? | Yes. Regulation depends on the company serving your country. Swissquote uses different licensed entities in different jurisdictions. |
| Is Swissquote a scam? | No. The genuine Swissquote group is not an unauthorised operation. However, scammers can impersonate established brokers. |
| Does Swissquote offer forex? | Yes. Its trading services generally include forex, CFDs and, depending on the entity, shares, ETFs, funds, bonds, options, futures and cryptocurrencies. |
| Is Swissquote suitable for beginners? | It offers demo accounts, education and multiple platforms, but leveraged forex is unsuitable for anyone who cannot afford to lose the trading capital. |
Who owns and regulates Swissquote?
Swissquote is a group rather than one worldwide brokerage licence. The group’s parent is Swissquote Group Holding Ltd, listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange. The best-known operating company is Swissquote Bank Ltd in Switzerland.
Swissquote Bank Ltd is a Swiss bank and securities dealer supervised by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, FINMA. Swiss banking regulation is a meaningful legitimacy check, although it does not protect a customer from losses caused by a bad trade. Eligible deposits at a Swiss bank may also fall within Switzerland’s depositor-protection framework, generally subject to the applicable rules and limit. That protection should not be confused with compensation for losing money on forex or CFDs.

Customers outside Switzerland may instead be onboarded by a different company. Examples associated with the group include:
- Swissquote Ltd in the United Kingdom, authorised and supervised by the Financial Conduct Authority;
- Swissquote Bank Europe SA in Luxembourg, supervised under Luxembourg’s financial regulatory framework;
- Swissquote Financial Services (Malta) Ltd, serving relevant European customers under Maltese regulation;
- Swissquote MEA Ltd in Dubai, regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority for its permitted activities;
- other local or regional Swissquote entities serving customers in markets such as Singapore.
The list and customer-allocation rules can change. Before depositing money, open the broker’s legal information or client-agreement page and identify the exact company. Then search that company—not merely “Swissquote”—on the regulator’s own register.
Why the legal entity matters
A Swissquote account is not covered by every protection advertised anywhere on the group’s website. The relevant entity determines:
- the maximum leverage available to retail clients;
- whether negative-balance protection applies and how it is defined;
- how client money is held and segregated;
- which compensation or deposit-protection scheme may apply;
- the regulator that handles a complaint;
- which instruments and account currencies are available; and
- the broker’s applicable fees and trading conditions.
For example, UK and European retail CFD rules generally impose leverage limits, commonly as low as 30:1 for major currency pairs. A professional-client account or a non-European entity may have different limits. Higher leverage is not a safety feature: it reduces the margin needed to open a position and makes it easier to lose money quickly.

Swissquote’s offering varies by country and account type, but the group is broader than a forex-only CFD platform. Depending on where you live, the platform may provide:
- major, minor and exotic currency pairs;
- indices, commodities, metals and energy CFDs;
- shares and exchange-traded funds;
- bonds, funds, futures or options through investment services;
- cryptocurrency trading or crypto-related products; and
- multi-currency cash and investment accounts.
Check whether an instrument is a CFD or an investment in the underlying asset. Buying a real share is different from trading a share CFD: a CFD normally gives price exposure without ownership, may incur overnight financing, and can be closed out if margin requirements are not met.

Forex costs: “competitive” does not mean free
Swissquote may advertise spreads from a particular minimum, but a minimum spread is not the cost most customers will receive throughout the day. Spreads can widen around economic announcements, market openings, rollovers and periods of thin liquidity.
Before opening an account, calculate the complete cost of a typical trade:

|---|---|
| Spread | Compare the normal and minimum spread for the exact currency pair and account. |
| Commission | Some pricing models build the cost into the spread; others may charge a separate commission. |
| Overnight financing | Positions held past the daily cutoff can incur swap or rollover charges. The amount may differ for long and short trades. |
| Currency conversion | Depositing, withdrawing or trading in a currency different from the account currency can create a conversion cost. |
| Inactivity or administration fees | Read the current tariff, particularly if you intend to trade only occasionally. |
| Bank and payment fees | Your bank or an intermediary may charge for transfers even where Swissquote does not charge a separate fee. |
Do not choose the broker based on a “zero commission” headline alone. On a leveraged forex trade, a spread of a few points, overnight financing and slippage can matter more than a nominal commission.
Platforms and order execution
Swissquote has offered its own trading platform alongside widely used third-party platforms such as MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 in relevant markets. Availability is entity-specific, so confirm the exact platform before registering. A demo account is useful for testing the interface, but demo execution cannot reproduce every aspect of live liquidity and slippage.
Important execution details include:
- Market orders: the final fill can differ from the displayed quote in a fast market.
- Stop-loss orders: a stop generally becomes a market order once triggered, so it does not guarantee an exact exit price during a gap or liquidity event.
- Limit orders: they may control the minimum or maximum price but are not guaranteed to execute.
- Margin close-out: the broker can close positions when available equity falls below the required level.
Read the execution policy and product-specific terms rather than relying on the platform’s chart price. A stop-loss limits intended risk; it cannot remove gap risk, leverage risk or overnight risk.
Opening and verifying an account
Swissquote normally requires identity and residence checks before an account is fully activated. Expect to provide a government-issued identity document, personal information, tax-residency details and, where requested, proof of address or source-of-funds information.

- Start from the official Swissquote website rather than a link sent by an online contact.
- Select your country of residence and note the legal entity shown during the application.
- Read the client agreement, risk disclosure and fee schedule before funding.
- Complete the identity checks using details that match your bank account.
- Make a small initial deposit, if possible, and test a withdrawal before committing a larger amount.
Verification delays do not by themselves indicate fraud. Banks and brokers can pause deposits or withdrawals while checking identity, payment ownership or source of funds. The broker should, however, explain what document is missing and provide support through an official channel.
Deposits and withdrawals
Available funding methods depend on the country and entity. Bank transfer is usually the least ambiguous route for a substantial deposit because the payment trail clearly identifies the account holder. Card and electronic-wallet options may have separate limits, processing times or return-to-source rules.
Use only an account in your own name. A genuine broker should not ask you to transfer money to an employee’s personal bank account, a cryptocurrency wallet supplied by a salesperson, or an unrelated “payment agent.” Withdrawals can be delayed by compliance checks, incorrect bank details, intermediary banks or a requirement to return funds to the original payment method.
There is no legitimate reason to pay an extra “tax,” “release fee,” “insurance charge” or “account-unlocking fee” to withdraw your own balance. If somebody demands one, stop sending money and contact Swissquote through the contact details published on its official website.
How to spot a Swissquote impersonation scam
Regulated brokers are frequently copied by fake websites and fake account managers. A person using the Swissquote name is not proof that you are dealing with the real firm.
Warning signs include:
- an unsolicited approach through WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram or a dating site;
- guaranteed returns or claims that a manager can eliminate trading losses;
- pressure to deposit immediately or to increase the deposit to “unlock” better profits;
- a domain that resembles Swissquote but is not an official Swissquote domain;
- requests for payment in cryptocurrency or to a third-party bank account;
- software that gives the caller remote control of your computer; and
- statements that a regulator, tax office or recovery company requires an upfront payment.
Verify the domain, telephone number and legal entity independently. Do not use contact details supplied by the suspicious caller. If you have already paid a suspected clone, contact your bank or card provider promptly, preserve messages and transaction records, and report the matter to the relevant regulator and police.

How risky is forex trading with Swissquote?
The broker’s legitimacy does not make the product safe. Retail forex is commonly offered through leveraged CFDs or margin contracts. A relatively small market move can consume a large portion of the account when the position is oversized.
Illustration: with $1,000 in an account, a trader who controls a $30,000 position has exposure equivalent to 30 times the account balance. A 1% adverse move represents approximately $300 before spread, financing and execution effects. Several losing trades can exhaust the available margin quickly.

Final verdict: is Swissquote legit?
Yes—Swissquote is a legitimate forex broker and financial group, not a scam. Its regulated status, listed parent company and established banking operations make it materially different from an anonymous offshore website or an unsolicited “account manager.”
The sensible qualification is that Swissquote is not risk-free and the brand does not provide identical protection worldwide. Confirm the legal entity, regulator, leverage, compensation arrangement and current fee schedule before depositing. Also remember that a legitimate broker can still be expensive for your trading style, and no regulator protects you from losses caused by excessive leverage.
FAQ
Is Swissquote safe for forex trading?
Swissquote is a legitimate, regulated brokerage group, but forex trading itself is high risk. Safety depends partly on the entity serving you, while trading losses, slippage, financing costs and margin close-outs remain your responsibility.
Best Value
Is Swissquote regulated by FINMA?
Swissquote Bank Ltd in Switzerland is supervised by FINMA. Customers in other countries may contract with another Swissquote entity and should check the regulator named in their own account agreement.
Can Swissquote guarantee profits?
No. Neither Swissquote nor a genuine regulated broker can guarantee forex profits. Anyone promising fixed or risk-free returns while using the Swissquote name is a major scam warning.
Does Swissquote offer MetaTrader?
Swissquote has offered MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 in relevant markets, alongside its own platform. Availability depends on the customer’s country and legal entity, so confirm it during the application process.
Can I lose more than I deposit with Swissquote?
The answer depends on the entity, product and client classification. Retail negative-balance protections may apply in some jurisdictions, but do not assume they apply universally. Read the applicable risk disclosure and margin terms.
How can I verify a Swissquote email or website?
Start at the official Swissquote website, identify the legal entity and compare it with the relevant regulator’s register. Never rely solely on a link, phone number or account manager who contacted you first.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Swissquote is legit, but the right question is not simply whether the brand is regulated. Check which Swissquote company holds your account, what protections apply in your country, what the full trading costs are, and whether you are comfortable with the possibility of losing money through leveraged forex.
